Pruitt insistent on man coverage

@Go Vols 5 It looks like to me also that we don't drop many from the DL to help take away short passes. With RPO, the QB is reading the lbs/second level to see if he sucks in for the run or stays home for the pass. Since the QBs eyes are reading that level, why not instruct/make a DL drop and help take away some of these quick rpo throws? Yeah, if offense calls a run you are possibly in trouble, but we gotta do something to take away/pick off/scare the offense from taking advantage of us with all this RPO stuff. Just a thought

Thank goodness most of us aren’t the DC or OC. All of us think Bama and UGA have good defenses and will continue to year in and year out. They have great schemes and great players. Pruitt has the exact same scheme. One thing is different right now about Tennessee and the other two...

There are things like this in the playbook but the best way (IMO) to help against RPOs is to take away players who are in run/pass conflict. Pruitt does this, I assure you. There are many ways to do this. Again, my opinion but an educated one, scheme isn’t the problem.

You have obviously paid more attention to professionals than underclassmen college players. Perhaps later with more experience and/or athletes...
You are on the right track though, Alabama would be a challenge for many professional teams this year.
Alabama would get beat like a drum by the Raiders, I think even there coach seems to be ignorant

No doubt. That is exactly why I'm advocating to do something different because we don't have the same talent as those two. But, I get what you are saying, that this defensive scheme does it all in your opinion. It has a ton of answers, I get that.

Great coaches adapt to the talent they have. It doesn’t work the other way around very often.

If Pruitt wants to play man, he needs to recruit some who can. In the meantime.....

@Go Vols 5 hahaha....I just saw the Rams de drop back on an RPO and pick off mahomes! Awesome...lbs sucked in, mahomes read it and locked onto his rec ( probably a slant ) made the throw, de dropped back, and pick 6. Lovely. I love seeing teams stop RPO, specially getting the turnover

Haha. Well...it looked like to me the DE played run, like he should bc he was getting base blocked by the OT, and was just able to get his hand up and tip the ball. Rams were in zone behind (I think 3 deep 4 under) and the targeted receiver was open. Great play by the DE for sure.

I'm sure that you're aware that nearly every defensive call Pruitt makes has elements of zone coverage in it. Pruitt is highly regarded on that side of the ball, he's not going to change what has worked for him and seemingly every other great defense from the past. When you can guard them in man it shrinks the field and funnels everything to your strength in the middle. Our problem is that we've not become that dominant anywhere on the field, YET.

To have the awareness to drop and get his hands up that quick suggests to me he was sniffing rpo. The run block by the tackle should have sold the run long enough to hit that quick slant/throw and keep the dl from sniffing it out. If you are correct though, heck of an individual play by the end. Amazing play recognition and reflexes.

I don't know if you've been watching the games this year--but A. Taylor, B. Thompson, and that Flowers kid are pretty darn good at man coverage for true freshman in the SEC. And they're all CJP and crew recruits.

I’ve watch the games. I’ll give you Taylor & Thompson. I haven’t seen enough of Flowers to come to that conclusion yet. But 2 isnt 5 or 6 and that’s what you need to be successful. Notice how many balls get thrown at Buchanan and Shamburger?

Flowers was playing the best of the 3 true freshman before he hurt his shoulder.....This year is house money in spite of the continual whining and complaining by idiots on this site.

Flowers, Taylor, Thompson, and some other DB recruits will be our starting DBs next year. CJP was highest in praise for Flowers before he got hurt. Buchanan has improved under CJP--but still not up to par just yet. And I don't know if he'll get there. However, I do know that those 3 true FR DBs are very good and they are CJP's recruits. Another stellar recruiting class of DBs and some help from the front 7 in getting a little pressure will go a long way next year. In spite of what some on here think--I think our defensive front 7 will be MUCH BETTER if we get all of guys who have committed to us.

We've gotten a little taste of CJP's ability to coach a defense with nothing close to BAMA's talent. He's the real deal!

It's just a matter of getting the recruits CJP wants and time. All I would say to you is just be a little more patient--you'll see.

GO VOLS!
