Pruitt: "I didn't come here to win 6 games

On calling out some of his players after the spring game:

“It’s a reality check. I’m not sure some of these guys are used to being told exactly the way it is. That’s one thing that they’re going to get from us.”

Time will tell if he is able to win here...but at least CJP is gonna shoot it straight and demand maximum effort and excellence from the players....I like it...

It's just hard to find something about the guy that is not likable....But I'm sure some of you snowflakes on here will always manufacture some way to find fault with him....

Yeah Phil's record was bad against FL but what about his record against UGA & Bama? Keep in mind Phil was going up against the best teams in the history of UF's program while he was coaching the VOLS.

That is true....NOT MANY were beating Spurrier's Gators back in the day...

CJP should check out the St. James' Episcopal Church and the St. John's Lutheran Church.

Come on Jax, you know none of that matters to these guys. It doesn’t matter that Phil won more games (5) versus those great Florida teams than Battle, Majors, Kiffin, Dooley and Jones combined (4). And it certainly doesn’t matter that he was 21-11-1 vs UGA and Bama and won a national championship. He just sucks, he’s fat and his recruiting fell off in the early 2000s and that’s all that matters.

It's easy to talk about what you are going to do, but actually doing it is a different thing entirely.

Understood. My point was that no boxer, no player, no competitor is likely to win, ever, without preparing and expecting to win. We just saw what happens with our previous coach who denied all expectations, who ran away from them kicking and screaming....culminated in the worst season ever at Tennessee.

Pruitt hasn’t coached a game yet. All he can do at this point is say what his plans are, what his expectations are, how he plans to go about it. I find it refreshing and going about things the right way.

Additionally, he said he “didn’t have to take this job, but he wanted to take this job”, he wants to be here.....and he fully understands what the expectations and history of winning is at Tennessee....and like he said, he “didn’t come here to just win 6 games”. Not sure how any Vol fan can do anything but be pleased about this.

Wasnt he kinda going up agaiist some of the worst teams from UGA and Bama though? Great record but in a mediocre period for those teams. Tough record against UF but during an exceptional run for them.

There's a lot of chicken and egg in this perspective (as in, "which came first...?").

Georgia and Bama were having bad years throughout most of the Fulmer era in part BECAUSE we were beating them.

Florida was winning huge in part BECAUSE Tennessee was losing to them.

With only 12 (back then 11) games in the regular season, a swing of one key game against a top rival means a whole lot in deciding how well teams are doing.

There's no way to untangle the chicken and the egg in these cases. You just gotta appreciate what did happen. Fulmer won a lot of games against two of our top three competitors; and he won significantly less against the other one.

So, does Fulmer “get it” or not? First you say he does, then you say he hasn’t since 20 years ago. It’s blind faith or anything else to agree with a very simple, truthful, singular statement that Fulmer made.

Point is, as you conceded early in your post, Fulmer was right when he told Pruitt he’d be judged at Tennesee by how he fares vs Bama, Florida and Georgia....and his record against Florida, which is light years better than any Tennessee head coach since Bill Battle, has nothing to do with it.

You don’t like Fulmer, you sure as hell don’t like Pruitt, we get it. But can you at least wait until either gives you a legit reason to gripe about something they’ve said or done? Let Pruitt lose his first game, and then you can go off about what an awful choice he was and about how Fulmer should never have been given the keys to the Athletic department because he sucked as a coach and couldn’t beat Florida. Can we at least wait until then?

I mainly just think it's stupid as hell bringing up Fulmers record or Pruitt's national title rings ad nauseum as if either one of those things will guarantee wins next season.

Doubt Holgorsen and WVU cares one iota about them.

What's getting ridiculous on here is when you and some other serial posters absolutely rant against anyone that doesn't share your over the top enthusiasm for a man that hasn't been a head coach in a game yet.

I brought up the man's record against FL and think there were better choices out there as an AD. I'm not sold on Pruitt until I see the games on the field.

You don't like those opinions and that's fine. Freak put that ignore button on the site for a reason. Or continue pissing and moaning about my opinions. Up to you Chief.

If we as a fanbase are going to give Fulmer a bit of latitude for losing to Florida because the teams were so exceptional, would we also not take his victories against Georgia and Bama with a grain of salt as well?

Oh, if you do one, you must certainly do the other.

I'm just not a fan of either.

When we win, let's celebrate (not talk down the teams we beat). When we lose, let's shake hands, then shake it off (not venerate the teams to whom we lost). That's just how I see it.

Fact is, Phil Fulmer beat some quality opponents, and he lost to some quality opponents. All in all, he beat a lot more than he lost to. And his victories over some contributed to them not being great in those years, while his losing to others contributed to them winning championships.

It's just how it works. Chicken and egg.

No, but it is a hell of a lot better than our previous coach saying last year that the end of the 2016 season, with losses to South Carolina and Vanderbilt costing us the East title, "wasn't a disappointment."

It puts the lotion on Nick's skin...
It draws Nick's bathwater in the evenings...
If it is good it gets a cookie.

What you categorize as a “rant” is as much a dissenting opinion as the one you hold sacred...yours. :hi: One way don’t work on here.

Exactly. Phil beat GREAT Florida teams 5 times, was 5-12 vs the Gators. Majors was 1-5, Kiffin 0-1, Dooley 0-3, Jones 1-4 vs some of the worst Florida teams in decades. So, if my math is right, and I believe it is.....Tennessee has beaten Florida 7 times in its last 31 games....5 of which were by Fulmer coached teams. But hey, “what was Fulmer’s record vs Florida?” (while quietly not bringing up his record vs Georgia and Alabama.....shhhh)

Come on, KB! The '03, & 04 UF teams weren't great.

Now, the '01 UF team was! Had UT not played Miami a UF/ Miami NC game would have been a great one.

I'm sure they've taken great pride in beating up on Dooley and Jones the last 8 years.

No, they don't...but UT fans take pride in beating a McElwain coached team. Take it where you can, right?

(chumming the waters, chumming the waters, chumming the waters)...
