Pruitt Frustrated By Lack of Support

Thank Fulmer Boyd for keeping Barnes. I know a lot of people on here whined about that last year, looks like a great move now.

FYP

During his time, he's used some of his own money to help UT out, such as last spring when he put together a bonus package to keep UT Knoxville basketball coach Rick Barnes from leaving for a job with UCLA, records show.
Documents show Boyd pledged up to $300,000 of his own money to create a bonus pool and found nine other supporters to join him. Together they created a pool of up to $3 million for Barnes, and spared UT from having to come up with the money itself.

Unnamed sources (again) for the claims about what Pruitt has said and what he feels in this article. Nah, I ain’t buying it. Yet.
How do we know this story is even remotely legitimate? There has been so much unfounded crap from the media the past 4 years that you can’t believe anything that you read...

And here is the a part that blew my mind.

"So if Pruitt gets fired, he’ll be paid around $12.48 million. That number is what’s called “hard exposure” by contract nerds. And here’s the most important part: The $12-ish million has no offset. Another job paying Pruitt won’t count against the total, though he has no legal obligation to seek further employment after termination. Pruitt is owed a $4 million base salary in 2021, then $4.2 for the four seasons through 2025 (holy sh** you idiots extended him I will never not pause what I’m doing and marvel at that). In 2021, he’ll also receive a retention bonus of $200,000 and an expenses budget of $36,000."

I always think the admin can't get any worse at negotiating contracts and then.... this part.

Yes, Fulmer’s inexperience as an AD and working contracts was grossly exposed with the foregoing.

The contract extension was nothing short of corporate malfeasance. Fulmer should be fired for writing such an absurd extension. There was ZERO reason to extend Pruitt when we did, ZERO! His best win was Indiana with several bad losses. Nobody was coming after Pruitt. A little business acumen and patience would have saved UT millions!

Pruitt never acted like he really wanted to be here. My guess is he thought way more of his capabilities than he actually possesses and saw it as a stepping stone to replace Saban.

Oh please... take your poor grammar and go replace Saban. Bama deserves no less

Whether you choose to see it or not, Phillip Fulmer is the athletic director, so it is his job to secure the funds needed for athletic department hires. He is the guy that has to get the big money boosters to put the money down for hiring and keeping coaches. Since you seem to blame Fulmer over and over for hiring and extending Pruitt, have the have the gall to give him credit for keeping Barnes. You can’t have it both ways...

How about the way he handled Barnes contract? Or Vitello's?

Barnes made sense. Barnes was and still is a hot name. Barnes is a winner and has won big. Fulmer fought to keep him. Pruitt was not a hot name, not winning big, nobody was after him and the timing was absurd. Pruitt wasn’t going anywhere. Zero reason for Fulmer to do it when he did. Made no business sense as Pruitt had accomplished very little.

I think Vitello is a good coach.

For the record on Pruitt I’d love nothing more than for him to lead TN to a win over a&m this Saturday, recover some recent decommits and start winning big. I just cannot see any reason why on earth Fulmer extended him when he did, no offset language & doubling the buyout. Baffles me!

If Boyd didn't step in, Fulmer would have let Barnes go to UCLA. Fulmer didn't pony up $300k of his own cash, and convince 9 boosters to join him in doing so.

It's not "both ways". Fulmer was incompetent as AD when negotiating with Barnes, forcing Boyd to step in and bail him out. Fulmer was incompetent as AD when negotiating with Jimmy Sexton on a wholly unwarranted extension for Pruitt.

Gotta wonder if this is true and it’s well known behind the scenes. Pruitt never looks like he has any passion for being here, so I can’t imagine the boosters are big fans of his.
I don't know what's going on behind the scenes, but I would guess that the power folks are split and some, maybe the H, are letting it be known that they aren't happy with him. Fuller may no longer be giving him the you have five years support speech privately anymore. That may be the lack of support he is referring to.

Fulmer should be fired immediately for the raise and extension he gave Pruitt when he hadn’t done a single thing yet. That’s not even mentioning the extension he gave himself, as if anyone else was seeking his services. Just like the first time, Fulmer has earned his dismissal yet again.

For the record, the fact he didn’t even interview mike leach while he was supposedly out scouring for a coach was malpractice right off the jump.
IMO he wasn’t allowed. I don’t think the money people wanted Leach because of his lawsuit against his former employer over the James-Tool Shed debacle. That’s what Currie was fired for.

Boyd is Fulmer’s boss. Just like you don’t make the most important decision of the entire organization without your boss signing off, neither does Fulmer. They work in concert. PM is the AD and face of the Athletic Dept but he isn’t drawing up contracts. He is signing his name to a contract (that a law firm drafted) only after everyone signs off behind the scenes. That includes Boyd and most (not all) but most of the boosters.

LOL...there is zero evidence to back up your fantasy that Boyd gave $300k of his own money, and found 9 others to do the same, at Fulmer's request.

Barnes goes to UCLA if the matter is left in Fulmer's hands.

Not sure how you got that out of what I said.
Not even close. This is what I said...

Fulmer does not give CJP or any other coach an extension without Boyd and booster support. That’s what I said, along with the fact that he damn sure isn’t drafting contracts.

Someone stated it , I believe he replied to you in error. I read that post here in the last hour or so.

Because Fulmer couldn't or was unable to find the funds to keep Barnes. He was going to let Barnes go to UCLA, Boyd stepped in and found the funds including putting up his own cash to keep Barnes.

That was not Fulmer's boss doing something at his employee's request, that was Fulmer's boss, doing what was in the best interest of the university, in spite of the AD being incapable of coming up with a package to retain Barnes.

If you believe that Fulmer as AD, is both powerless and blameless, then what's the point of keeping him? If Boyd and boosters are really making the decisions, then let's save money, buy Fulmer out, and then Boyd can deal directly with the coaches.

The UT fan mob is what got all of this started years ago, now you want us to trust they have the right answer now? It's time we stop listening to the mob instead of following them off the cliff as we have since the advent of the internet.
You couldn't be more wrong. What got us here was all the success we had in the 90's. People grew accustom to having a powerhouse football team. If you're happy with a 3 win football team, enjoy yourself and get off the forum. The rest of us want the powerhouse back.
