It didn’t concern me at the time but I didn’t expect 2020 either. The smart thing to do was to wait until after year 3. Learning curve for Fulmer and the power brokers.Easy to say that now, sure. But was anyone really complaining about the extension back when we were 8-0? If memory serves, I even heard several on here saying that it would be good for recruiting purposes, showing that our AD has that much confidence in our coach.

Whole heap of guesses and estimates and ASSUMPTIONS. He can't guarantee contracts beyond what he is allowed to do for example. why would he propose 5-7 new assistants in a make or break year? Predictive analytics with zero inputs available taking into account COVID like circumstances in major college athletics do not excite me either. Reminds me of the age old story of a high level meeting where several departments reported their actual data and at the end the CEO asked his analysts what it really says. The analyst responded, "well what do yo want it to say." Been there done that....
You asked, "Why would he propose 5-7 new assistants in a make or break year?"
Is that a serious question? He would propose it to try to save his skin for another year. Plus, most of these guys see the situation for exactly what it is and are deciding to go ahead and jump off the Titanic and take their chances. So, there will be some he would not want to retain plus a slew of others who are going to leave on their own accord IF he is retained. That's why one of the major arguments in moving on right now is because of the money they'd have to dole out next fall if things went sideways and they had to buyout all of these new assistants.
And in your scenario there of the high level meeting where several departments reported their actual data......
The actual data doesn't lie. The team is regressing at a rapid level with a coach who looks lost in the wilderness leading the charge. Losses like Georgia State are part of that raw data. The amount of 21+ point blowouts (most by any SEC head coach in ages and coming in worse than people like Joker Phillips). How about getting blown out by Kentucky in your 3rd year at home? Actual data shows that the team finished 108th out of 127 in total offense in 2020. The Simple Rating System put Tennessee 97th total out of the 127 teams in 2020. I don't think 97th out of 120 will cut the mustard - ever - at Tennessee.
COVID circumstances did not stop teams like Auburn, Vanderbilt, and South Carolina from trying to improve themselves going into 2021.
I'm not making heaps of guesses and assumptions. I'm going by that "actual" data to make these assumptions. And there is a whole pile of statistics to back up this assumptive data. And now other real world examples of teams making changes in a COVID year.
You simply cannot look at this body of work and the laundry list of red flags that comes with Coach Gomer and think that keeping him heading into fall of 2021 will be anything but an absolute trainwreck. The team in 2020 was one of the most experienced squads in the SEC which should have been a big advantage considering the COVID situation and lack of practice. This should have actually given UT an advantage if you look at it objectively. Now, we will head into next year relying on a Freshman QB in Bailey with very few live rounds worth of experience or a true Freshman in Kaidon Salter. They are losing some other key players - and have had several enter the portal - with how many more to come if Pruitt is retained?
So, now we are looking at a scenario where next year is going to be vicious and the team will be much younger across the board. There's no way that he could possibly lose to Bowling Green - even with his ineptness - I don't think. But then Pitt comes to town for game #2 and they'll be at least pretty decent to good. A loss there and it's O-V-E-R. The only other guaranteed wins (in likelihood) would be over South Alabama and Vandy. South Carolina, Ole Miss, Kentucky, and Missouri would all be tossups on paper heading into the year. The team plays at Florida, Bama, Kentucky, and Missouri. That means a best case scenario next season would be about 6-6. If you think after all of this turmoil already - with Gomer alienating a large portion of the fanbase and some of the administration at UT - that 6-6 would cut it I have some news for you.
I just try to give a little insight into why I believe the way that I do. I don't really care whether anyone believes me or not. This is a discussion forum. Anyone who disagrees has just as much right to express their opinion as I do. But I really think this is a moot point and all of my wordiness is just wasting the time it takes me to type because I still firmly believe that he's gone sometime in the next several days to a week. It's all about the timing........
Fulmer already said Pruitt was coming back when he initially accepted the bowl game last week.I wish the university would make a statement already in what direction they are heading . This is crazy lol I mean there hasn’t been nothing in regards of all these rumors. They could easily come out and say “Hey, JP is our guy” and lay everything to rest, but nothing!
Was it a yeah he’s coming back to coach this game or coming back to coach this game and for the 21’ season. Also the Will Friend move, has there been any talk about why they let that happen regardless we fans know why. And also any indication of any future coaching changes? Just because it is the holidays does not mean the business stops.Fulmer already said Pruitt was coming back when he initially accepted the bowl game last week.
I'm stuck in (autocorrect) lazy. Anyone else want to dig up Fulmer's recent tweets? Pruitt is in quarantine right now, so I doubt he is being allowed to interview anyone. Was it a yeah he’s coming back to coach this game or coming back to coach this game and for the 21’ season. Its littered in here. Perhaps its the same person over and over but I have seen referenced at least 3 or 4 times. Something to effect of Pruitt has been told to hold off on finding a replacement for Friend. As if to insinuate he may not be the head man in a few days. I'm not saying I believe it but seems like that they mentioned Volquest.Who are the multiple people?
Absolutely not as UT does not have the finances at present to fire any one with the cost required of around $19 million dollars and still paying Butch Jones for another month. The UT Athletic Department like every other college athletic department is in horrible financial shape due to lack of ticket money all caused by the virus. Pruitt is not going to be fired this year period. There will probably be several replacements within the coaching staff and what ever comes out of the investigation of the players receiving some sort of financial assistance which at present is substantially lacking of information and the two coaches that were absent for the Texas A&M game. It may take another 2 to 3 years to get the Vols competitive in the SEC again, but it will happen.

He's going to be coaching Tennessee in 2021. His grandfather's funeral maybe delays it, but not Covid. Covid doesn't prevent a phone call.
He's going to be here. Mights as well get used to it. Best hope is we make some good asst coach hires and Pruitt allows them freedom to do their job and he's learned some lessons. I hope...
I just want to win.
If they do make a change it won't be Freeze. Saw where the ncaa told Auburn they recommended against hiring Freeze.
So UT won't make a move on him now. Even though it's really not the ncaa's business who we hire.
Have you actually taken a gestamate look at the numbers? It ain’t pretty and explains why CJP hasn’t been fired already.I like how people use the excuse of the pandemic and loss of revenue to justify not making a change. Operational cost cuts were made as well lol. Not to mention tv money and factor in booster incentives. It’s financially feasible.
That’s a guesstimate, not factual numbers. I’m pretty sure UT accounting team of the athletic department could release the raw data right now, but they won’t because they will look bad.Have you actually taken a gestamate look at the numbers? Nothing is being said because there’s nothing to say. If you think anyone outside this board are concerned about the handwringing on here you are very mistaken. CJP can’t and won’t be fired this year.I wish the university would make a statement already in what direction they are heading .
