Pruitt: A four quarterback derby.

If that was truly the case, Pruitt and Helton wouldn't be wasting reps by giving each one the exact same amount.IF it was truly a 2 man race you wouldn't take away much needed additional reps from Chryst and JG. I do believe it comes down to Chryst and JG. This is purely hypothetical and just for adding a different perspective. And no I'm not saying this happens or that I see much chance of it. But say Shrout shows up and impresses. Say he clearly outplays Chryst, JG and McBride and leaves no doubt he is the best QB of the 4. If the QB's weren't each given the same chance, then they would never truly know who is the best option. In saying that, I do believe Shrout Redshirt's. I also believe Chryst and JG turn it into a 2 man competition by separating themselves and those equal reps start shifting into those 2 getting more than Shrout and McBride. But I love seeing each guy getting an equal chance, it's the best way to create competition and separation. I'm honestly shocked McBride hasn't transferred to an offense that better fits him. Really expected to see that after the Spring. That tells me he's truly getting an equal opportunity and it not just coach speak.

Yeah, its a 2-man race between JG and Chryst, and JG having been here this spring is currently the leader in the clubhouse.

The cool thing that Pruitt actually believes in, which Jones was allergic to when he was here, is player development. The 3rd and 4th string guys this spring got reps in an effort to keep them engaged, to help them develop and progress as players. My guess is that will continue through most of fall camp until he identifies his first and second team players and has to necessarily pull back on giving reps to guys who aren’t gonna play much outside of special teams due to practice time restrictions and the need to begin weekly game preparation.

I don’t think our QB play defined the year last year. It wasn’t great, but at times it was enough and at other times it was pretty good. I think our OL and DL defined the season more than any other position groups last year....both were awful, especially our DL, which was dead last in the SEC and 126th nationally (out of 130 teams) in run defense.

Agree 100%. And The DL and front 7 should have been better than what they showed. With it being mentioned last year about how much Shoop and Hoke hated each other at an unprofessional level, it was not wonder we struggled there. If they were fighting at that kind of level then it had to have trickled down to the players and their performance. Throw in the type of fights that happened in the locker room, it was a bad situation all the way around on D. I also put that on Butch for not letting Shoop hire the guys he wanted, a lot of that could have been prevented. There's no way a DLine and Front 7 with KMac, Vickers, Taylor, Kongbo, Phillips, Tuttle, Johnson, Bituli, Sapp and Jumper should have looked that bad.

I'm hoping the OL issues were more because of all the injuries, them being soft. Then an OLine Coach who had never had a power 5 coaching job and coached most of his career at E.Ky, W.Ky and NM St. Another questionable at best hire by Butch who had equally bad Mahoney as his OC Coach before Wells. I'm really hoping our 2 biggest issues from last yr, along with Horrible OC coaching, can be fixed with real coaching and getting rid of the softness in the weight room.

I agree JG definitely has the upper hand because he's been on campus and been through Spring Practice. I do think that gap is less because of Chryst having played in this type offense before. But JG also has the timing and relationships with the receivers that Chryst doesn't have. I believe in the end that JG most likely wins the job and starts game 1. But also can see Chryst getting in the game too and don't thing JG would have a very long leash. Then again, Chryst could come in and just look horrible and they live and die with JG. That's the thing with transfers, you just never know how a guy will play with a 2nd chance somewhere else. I would have said someone was crazy if they had told me Peterman, Brissett and Grier would have done what they did once they left TN and Florida. If nothing else, Chryst will bring leadership and depth plus it should allow Shrout to RS.

The GATech team that averaged 307 rushing yards per game last year but hung 655 on us? That GATech team? Doesn’t that validate just how horrific our run defense was?

Btw, Missouri, a passing team that averaged 193 yards rushing per game went for 430+ on us last year. 4-7 Vanderbilt ran for 246 yards while we ran for 55 on them.....246 doesn’t sound crazy until you realize they were dead last in rushing offense in 2017, averaging 107 yards per game.
I'm aware of that. That's why I said a lot of that was from the Georgia tech game. Yes they put crazy numbers on us but it was a double over time game and they are a run heavy offense so it makes sense. They also only had 120 yards passing as well. Their average is also effected because it was their only overtime game of the year. It's like when you look at tackling stats versus an option team. Of course everyone is going to have crazy numbers up front because that's where the ball is the majority of the time. But it was one game and that one game skewed our numbers.
And yes I am aware of the other games as well. But at that point in the season it also makes sense because of other factors. We were on our third string quarterbacks first start at Missouri and could not sustain an offense long enough to score which tired our defense out allowing the run. Once Missouri was ahead they were obviously going to focus on the run game to chew the clock and because they knew they could.
By the Vanderbilt game, not only was jones gone, the players who were left and not injured had either quit or weren't playing to their full potential and it makes sense that that happened. For comparison alabama only had 280 yards rushing on us in their win.

I think that is the reason why we can't send personal messages anymore. People were meeting up to fight...

That wouldn't surprise me at all. That's pretty bad if fans of the same team let it get to that. Hell I could atleast maybe see it if it was Vols fans and an opposing fan base going at it. When I first moved to Ala I had to seek help from a higher power not to wanna throw hands with some of these bammer fans. But then learned to flip it around on them, show them it doesn't bother you and it gets under their skin more than anything. Not gonna lie it got dark there in my first days in Alabama lol.

Shrout will likely RS. McBride is strictly backup. JG and Chryst will battle it out. I think there shouldnt even be a battle. With what JG has had to endure since he got here, he has earned the starting job.

I’ve been a big defender of JG, but he hasn’t earned it yet. He still has work to do on making decisions more quickly and likely mastering the playbook as well.

He’ll have earned the job if/when he outperforms Chryst in the summer and throughout fall camp.

Agreed. There's been players endure a lot more than JG ever has and it didn't make them deserving of a starting job. I think JG can win the job and play well, but he's got a long way to go before he's even considered a good QB.

Lol you must not have been here a few years ago for the infamous Waffle House parking lot beer belly street tussle invitational. Yes, invitations were given and accepted by some VN posters for a no holds barred action tournament at a Waffle House. You can't make this shiznit up ya'll.

JG has superstar talent

All these haters will be his biggest fan after he goes nuts vs the gators.

He’s tough. He can make reads. He’s accurate. He’s got a strong arm. And he’s mobile. All the kid needs is some coaching. He’s only had a grad assistant and a running back coach from north texas as his position coach so far in his career. Helton will turn him into a star.

Unless our OL shows improvement, 3 or maybe all 4 may start at some point during the season..

I don't think anyone hates him. There's just a wait and see approach with him. I hope he lives up to the hype he had out of HS, but he's got a long way to go. Hopefully all it takes is some real coaching that's he's finally getting. We all saw what good coaching can do for a QB.( Crompton, Ainge) just to name a couple. He's got a really good arm and proved his toughness last yr. But wouldn't say he makes great reads yet. He definitely didn't last season. If anything, he made slow reads and held the ball way too long. But again I give him the benefit of the doubt with that joke for an offensive coaching staff he played under. Canales has been a QB Coach most of his Coaching days, but he hasn't exactly been at the biggest name schools nor has he shown much ability to develop a QB.At N.Texas he was OC and QB aoach. He needs to work on his touch, especially on the shorter and intermediate passes as well as being more accurate on the deep passes. All of which can be coached. But can he become the leader that Helton and Pruitt want in their QB and improve his maturity?? So far he's not displayed much of either, but Chryst could show him how to become that. Not to mention learning under Helton could benefit him greatly. Really think JG will benefit from a guy of Chryst's character and leadership skills. Hopefully that rubs off on JG and everything finally clicks for him. But until it does there will be doubt and skepticism, which is warranted.

I have little doubt that big improvements will be made and already have been by the OLine. Will Friend is one of the better developer's on a staff full of them. Being healthy, great coaching and hitting the weight room will do wonders for the OLine. Plus getting Smith and Hall back plus adding The JUCO Johnson will just make those chance's even better.

Unfortunately I am not sure I really care what he had to endure under the last clown. I only care that the best man for the job starts. Based on what I saw at the end of last year, quite frankly I would be a bit worried if JG won the job but also optimistic that maybe he has taken a tremendous leap in a short time.

Here's the hope. I hope JG is good enough to get the start for continuity with WRs and just future growth(if you can get 6-6 with JG and have him look fairly well it's better than getting 6-6 with Chryst just for future settling at the position). I hope some of Chryst ability and age shows JG what he needs attitude wise and pushes him to be a better leader. If none of that is possibly I believe it's time for JG to move on and really let Shrout or whoever next years QB might be settle in. I just don't see Mcbride leading a big time SEC team as he probably shouldn't have.
