It's difficult to know what to believe at this point. It's concerning, because if Pruitt really is mostly in the clear, it sends a pretty terrible message to other coaches, who may be less willing to take on the job after watching this play out. On the other hand, if big recruiting violations did take place, that will also make other coaches have 2nd thoughts about taking the job. And it's not even clear that they'll save the $12 million after the impending legal action.

The whole thing is an embarrassment to the university regardless of the truth.

If anyone who works for Pruitt committed 1 level 1, 1 level 2, or multiple level 3 violations he is subject to being fired with cause. It's unequivocally clear in his contract. He absolutely can be fired with cause. If he didn't know, it is still his fault. He is tasked with monitoring the program.

This university is a lot of things, but when it comes to firing a million dollar coach for cause, stupid isn’t an adjective I’d use. I would wager that they have a lot more money and lawyers that looked at this and said “fire with cause”. So this statement is merely a formality to save face and push for some money.

He has NOT received a show cause.

Not yet at least. The NCAA has not issued any penalties.
