Pruitt’s 1st Signature WIN?

WV will be the first. FL and SCAR will follow. The best signature win of the season within reason would be Auburn.

Auburn very rarely loses at home. Ask Alabama and Ga who they both beat by Double Digits there. One of the hardest places to win at. It's much easier to win at GA than at Auburn.

UF next season if ever.

I’m expecting this year to be a massive learning curve. Best case with close wins over UK and Vandy. Worst case close loses resulting in a similar record as last.

Hopefully he’s a quick learner, making adjustments to get 8-9 wins next season and competing for the East.

I have listed some Coach's who made big improvements their first year at that school, compared to the previous years win total. This shows how common big improvements are with coaching changes and a minimal learning curve by the Coach's and players. A coaching change can completely change things for the better and from one season to the next. Kiffin had a 9 game win improvement year one at FAU, Urban a 5 game win improvement in year one at Utah and a 6 game win improvement year one at Ohio St, Gus had a 9 win improvement in yr one at Auburn, Scott Frost a 6 game win improvement in yr one at UCF, Jim Mora a 3 game win improvement in year one at UCLA, Tom Herman a 5 game win improvement in yr one at Houston, Saban a 5 game win improvement in year one at LSU, Jeff Brohm a 4 game win improvement in year one at Purdue, Chizik a 3 game win improvement year one at Auburn, Taggart a 3 game win improvement in year one at Oregon, Rich Rod a 4 game win improvement in year one at Arizona, Mack Brown a 5 game win improvement year one at Texas, Terry Bowden a 5 game win improvement year one at Auburn, DJ Durkin a 3 game win improvement year one at Maryland, Bo Pellini a4 game win improvement in year one at Nebraska, McElwain a 3 game win improvement in year one at Florida, Butch Davis a 4 game win improvement year one at Fla Int, Justin Fuente a 3 game win improvement year one at Va Tech, Ralph Friedgen a 5 game win improvement year one at Maryland, Ty Gillingham a 5 game win improvement year one at Notre Dame and a 4 game win improvement year one at Stanford, Jeff Redford a 9 game win improvement year one at Fresno St, Brady Hoke a 4 game win improvement year one at Michigan, Troy Calhoun a 5 game win improvement year one at Air Force, Frank Wilson a 3 game win improvement year one at Texas S&A, Rick Stock still a 3 game win improvement in year one at MTSU, Scott Satterfield a 4 game win improvement in year one at Appalachian St., Chris Peterson a 4 game win improvement in yr one at Boise St, Houston Nutt a 5 game win improvement year one at Arkansas and a 6 game win improvement year one at Ole Miss, Kevin Sumlin a 4 game win improvement year one at Texas A'M., Bob Pruett an 8 game win improvement year one at Marshall.

We beat WV in a relatively close game but nothing close to what would be called “signature”.

However, when we beat Florida by a surprisingly solid margin, it’s hailed as CJP’s first signature win, at least until the following few weeks show that Florida has more problems than people thought and it was more them sucking than us being awesome.

Later, some people call our trouncing of SCar a signature win... but is that ever, really?

Beyond that I can’t say. All this prognosticatin’s done got me thirsty.

South Carolina in 2019

South Carolina will never be a signature win for any coach!

😟
What will be Coach Pruitt’s 1st signature win? Does it even happen this season? If this has been a thread...my bad...if not...post away.
I’m going with Florida. We should be completely healthy still...that’s my pick.

The 1st win!

👍

He's already had his signature win. The moment signed his first autograph for an excited and happy to have it Vols fan, it was a win. Win the fanbase is the first thing a coach must win, and he's done that IMNSHO.

Your P.S. brings up an interesting question. Would it be an empty gesture causing contempt for the Vols program nationwide also locker room wall motivation for Grier and WV -or- would asking for Grier to undergo a drug test before sept 2 be seen as a positive or at least justified given his history, seen nationally as a positive because the Vols seek compliance?
It would be interesting if after Tennessee beats West Virginia that QB Will Grier tests positive for a banned substance(like at Florida)and is banned for the rest of 2018;)

Pretty sure that means absolutely nothing. I could coach high school football, soccer, and field hockey...at the same time.
I don’t know how you can possibly do that. I’m an offensive coach at a 5a school in east Tn and that’s a full time job. If I’m not at our 4 hr daily practice, I’m either in the film room, or in a coaches meeting.

first let me say I’m not arguing or debating. I just don’t think a middle of the road Uf team with a new coach would really count as a signature win. If we somehow managed to beat uga or bama that would qualify as one to me. Also depending on how Auburn’s season is going when we play them, that would definitely be one.

What the hell is a "signature win" exactly? Is it one of those nebulous terms like "elite?"

Anyway, odds are it won't come until 2019. Beating a (likely) unranked Florida team at home early in the season wouldn't be a signature win.

West Virginia shouldn't be ranked either. In my opinion a team that went 7-6 in 2017 shouldn't be ranked in the top 25 in the 2018 Preseason Poll.

They have a really high-powered offense with the QB and 2 WRs returning. Most of their losses last year were to pretty good teams, so I see why they are ranked. Preseason polls are forward-looking and make assumptions, which is why quite often teams start the season ranked but badly fade.

I don't think we have much of a shot at beating them - that's why I mentioned Florida.

I can easily see Tennessee beating both teams. The only teams i say Tennessee can't beat right now are Georgia,Auburn,Alabama and South Carolina.

Exactly what I always thought when Botch's 1st "signature" win occurred. Should've beat GA that year unless the ball wasn't fumbled out of the back of the end zone.

He’ll get the win against WV

His first big win should be Florida
It would be awesome if it were the train wreck to the dogs season though

I honestly would take another loss to Florida at this point to derail UGAs season hopes.

I don’t think there is agreement on what a “signature win” is. If we beat Florida, is that an automatic signature win, even if they’re like 6-6? Would any SEC win be a signature win? Could West Va be one? Then there’s the reality that signature wins don’t mean a ton in the long run. Butch had an awesome 1st year win over top 5 South Carolina and then well...

Having said that, I’m not expecting one in year 1. I really hope I’m wrong, but our best chance at one is probably against Florida, and we’ve read that book too many times.

I fully concur on this point. Designation of “signature win” seems to be applied on a sliding scale and, often, on a retroactive basis. Was the 1985 victory over then no. 1-ranked Auburn diminished by the fact that they finished 8-4 on the season? Not in my opinion. If memory serves me correctly, we went into the 1989 UCLA game as underdogs but proceeded to thrash them 24-6, courtesy of the Cobb-Webb tandem. I don’t know if UCLA suffered a rash of injuries after our game, which certainly could have impacted their seasonal record, but they finished 3-7-1.

Confidence is built cumulatively on the back of sustained success and it can be undermined or even shattered by a particularly bad performance. In 1969, we were ranked 3rd in the nation prior to the Ole Miss game, having thrashed Auburn 45-19 and Alabama by the score of 41-14. After falling flat on our faces to Archie Manning and company (38-0), we stumbled down the stretch, beating Kentucky and Vanderbilt only by the scores of 31-26 and 40-27.
