First, I think it's a shame that the ludicrous finish of last night's game has drawn VolNation's attention away from the overall strong performance of our Vols last night. Yes it sucks it lose, and yes it sucks more to feel cheated, but the players and coaches should be congratulated for the things within their control.
They played tough for 4 quarters, and since the Oregon game, I think they've given us that every week (many teams this decade have not). They turned around a 2-6 start to make a bowl. They gave us something to cheer for and be proud of.
5 months ago, I had some realistic goals for this team.
1) Make a bowl game
2) Develop our young talent
3) Pull at least one big upset
4) Give an effort every week that makes me proud to be a Vol
5) Limit injuries
We came remarkably close to achieving all of this. The bowl game was a great opportunity for our young team, and despite the result, there's a lot to be gained. The fact is that this game doesn't matter, despite the turmoil, it's not on the front page of any national sports pages, because no one outside of us cares. If we had won, this website would be full of people celebrating our season, and the ridiculous result shouldn't change that. The fact that we didn't pull off the upset against LSU shouldn't change that either. Sometimes the ball doesn't bounce your way, and I'd rather it happen in a season that where our W-L is almost irrelevant to our team having a successful season. The breaks will eventually turn our way.
We will be relatively healthy on 1/1/11. Our Freshman have more valuable experience than any SEC team. This team understands the feelings of victory and defeat, and will be unphased going forward. We have a strong class coming in.
Finally, a huge shout out to our Seniors... They have been through it all, and they have layed the cornerstone for the next decade of dominance. Denarius Moore jumping on that fumble last night, reeling in catch after catch - you're the man. Gerald Jones = 3rd down conversion. Luke Stocker with the big touchdown in OT when the team was down and out. Chris Walker disrupting the passing game all night. Even Chad Cunningham booming high and deep all night. Nick Reveiz - what do Vol fans not have to love about you, I hope your career returns to UT one day.
It's great to be a Tennessee Vol. Just think about where we went after losing six straight in 1988. We are the Tennessee Vols, and you can see the work in progress. We have a team that wants to put in the work, that wants to succeed, and they will.
GO VOLS!
