I was compiling Heupels record vs teams higher/lower than him in the talent composite among power 4 teams and haven't finished.

He's doing ok, but in typical Kiffin style, hasn't really accomplished anything...

2020 - 5-5 ok COVID year, no one really cares about this season
2021 - 10-3 - gets some lucky breaks vs Tennessee, Arkansas, and gets housed by Baylor in bowl game
2022 - 8-5 - starts out 7-0 due to easy schedule, then goes 1-5 including blowouts to Miss State and Texas Tech
2023 - 11-2 - his best year finished #11, beats Penn St in Peach Bowl
2024 - 10-3 - misses playoffs despite stacked team and easy schedule (only 2 ranked teams) due to upset losses to Florida and UK, beats Duke in bowl game
2025 - 2-0 so far, we shall see

He's 8-9 vs ranked teams and has only beaten FOUR teams he wasn't favored to beat
Despite our disagreements on what makes a coach good or bad in the other thread, I will agree with you here. No coach has had more chances at high positions and not accomplished... anything. I like Lane, I think hes the best OM can do, but I wouldn't trust him to sustain success at the highest level, even if he truly has grown and got better. Does anyone really think if he took the Florida job (sounds scary) that he is winning a natty?

Maybe he'd be foolish. Fact is if he ever wants to win a natty, his best route is to leave Ole Miss. But no doubt - as expected - he's doing great there.

I go back and forth on this. Traditional blue blood programs are going to fade away in this NIL era..... Now obviously Ole Miss doesn't have the deepest pockets, but that doesn't mean they can't get eventually there.

Six of the teams ahead of us either (a) play in a joke of a conference like the Big 10 or the ACC; (b) have ridiculous non-con schedules that set them up for minimum 8-9 win seasons, aka Ole Miss, or (c) are independents who also play a joke of a schedule, aka Notre Dame.

I think the Florida job is dead man walking for anyone..... I really believe that. I really think they are about to have their decade and a half of dysfunction....

Regarding a bigger job for Lane, I think all he has to do is continue winning at an all time high clip at Ole Miss (against historical %) and just wait for Deboer to get run out at Bama. Kiffin is the king of falling upward. I was and am fully prepared for him to wind up at Alabama down the road. I thought he would be arrogant enough to think he could be the coach that takes over after Saban retired, but he made smart choice there.
