Problems generating pressure on the QB

Walker has played extremely well.

Our team may not play well, but it isn't because walker isn't playing well. He's one of the bright spots...heck we are lucky to have him.

If he was playing badly I'd agree. But that's just not the case!

I think Chris Walker is a fine DE and i love his heart and fire. He just need's to keep doing what he is doing, he will be fine.

To say Walker has never made big plays on defense is quite a stretch. I seem to remember two huge interceptions that he had last year. He also played most of the year last year with a bad back and still managed to lead the team with 5 sacks. Just last week against Florida he made two huge, stops consecutively on 1st and 2nd down late in the game, and only because we have a terrible team on third down, both offensively and defensively, did those two plays not matter. It doesn't hurt that together with Reveiz he is one of the leaders of this defense and all of the other players rally around what he does.

The problem today wasn't getting pressure on the QB. We hit both of their QBs many, many times today. I honestly felt sorry for Ellis. As has already been mentioned, the issue is that by the time we got pressure the ball had already left the QB's hands due to their offensive game plan of quick screens and slants. I'm no expert, but I'd like to see a few more edge and CB blitzes. Mix it up and have your LBs blitzing off the line instead of a few yards back. Since we don't have any particular D Lineman that can occupy a couple of their O linemen, its going to be difficult to generate a ton of pressure throughout the year.

Been a problem for a while now. I'm not sure J. Smith shouldn't be starting over Chris Walker. Walker has been an average player his entire time here. Smith looks quicker than him.

I like what Smith has shown at times, but to say Walker has been average is a stretch. I remember him making several big plays this season and I think he plays with a lot of heart.

Just last week, he absolutely blew up the lead blocker on Florida's fourth down play and almost singlehandedly stopped that run. Not to say he doesn't need to do a better job pressuring the quarterback, but to me, he's been a bright spot on the defense.

Most pass plays for any offense should have the qb releasing the ball in under 5 seconds.

I agree but I like UAB's formation better. The QB getting the ball in the shotgun formation gave their QB more time to see the blitz and find a receiver.

He is average for the SEC and average for what UT used to line up at DE. I'm sure he is a great person and gives his all for UT....never been in any kind of trouble, good representative for the university and football program. All that said, there isn't a SEC team that fears him getting to their QB. Dooley needs to be focused on the future.

you're right! Hope it all works out for you and Coach Dooley. He's lucky to have you on his staff! THAT BEING SAID...Have a great day!

Someone needs to tell the staff we can generate more pressure with 11 guys instead of 10. That might help.

Walker is being asked to do a lot of things, not just pin his ears back and go for the qb. How many times have you seen him dropping into coverage this season. Wilcox defense is based on getting pressure on the qb from all over the field, not just the DE/DT position.

It is painfully obvious that we don't have a front four that can pressure the QB on their own, so it is up to the staff to scheme their way to the QB.

Thats going to mean bringing 5 or 6 at a time on big plays which will put all kinds of pressure on our secondary because they will be locked in man to man on the outside, and as Coach Dooley said in the presser after the game, the corners played terrible.

Its a huge risk for Wilcox right now to bring 6 and risk giving up the big play when he feels like by bring four he can keep everything in front of his defense and expect the linebackers to make plays to keep teams short.... which would have worked, except that our linebackers didn't tackle worth a darn all day.

I know it sounds simple but it comes down to just a few things: get some pressure with the front four, secondary prevent big plays and keep everything in front of them, and linebackers make the plays that they are on scholarship to make. None of these things worked against UAB, we didn't get any pressure on the QB, our secondary gave up two big pass plays, and our linebackers didn't tackle at all.

The answer: new personnel. We just don't have the jimmy's and joe's to get the job done right now.

There was a lot of pressure on their QB's, they just found soft spots in coverage and beat our secondary...several times.

This^. UAB's offense was designed to get rid of the ball. We got to and crushed Ellis quite a bit. He just got rid of the football before we could get there.

They got pressure & hit the QB, after UAB had ample time to throw. I watched Arkansas and Alabama, USCe & the Barn. Each of those teams generated pressure & got sacks.
