Probably not a popular opinion right now ... but ...

I think we are a competent QB away from being as good as anyone in the country not named Alabama or Clemson.
No, I don't give credit for a moral victory in this game ... it's just what I believe.
We're closer than the final score of this game indicates.
Go Vols!

Lmao that game was not even as close as the final acore indicated... Get real...

JG should have been benched for giving Georgia 12 points and momentum.

Yet, he got to play the whole game.
Was everyone making these statements when he was dropping dimes in the first half and we were in the lead? You can’t have it both ways! He can’t alone be at fault because of results. His dimes in the first half were a result of good protection and catches by Palmer. His poor play in the second half were a result of no protection and fumbles! You see the dilemma Pruitt has to deal with, right? It’s easy for us to sit here and bash the **** out of him about who to play and who this....etc... apparently the guys behind JG are not a better option! I’m sure the coaches are saying during the week, “ let’s play the guy that gives us the best chance to lose” get us fired and piss everyone in Volnation off! I’m sure this is there mind set!

Last game we were an OL and a second half competent QB away from being as good as anyone in the country.

I'm sure D. Johnson could have helped us out a bit too in the last 58 minutes of the game.

Above photos are a pretty clear indictment of our OL and/or praise for UGA’s D line. Can’t blame JG when he’s got guys coming at him that should be managed by the OL

Vols are just a good head coach, good online coach, couple of larger tailbacks, a good qb, some receivers that can get seperation, a good qb and a natural disaster that kills Saban, Smart and a couple other coaches away from competing for the SEC
You said good QB twice. We know what you mean!

I would have to agree. Our defense played well . 3 straight turnovers in third quarter did us in. Defense held them to Two field goals then of course a touchdown.
When you can't run the football in a single set backfield then you need to bring in a fullback. Or else you are just wasting a down.
Problem with JG is that he only sees his intended receiver and basically stares at where he is throwing always has. Once he learns to look safeties off our offense should get better.

The reason they stack the box and we are helpless is because our QB doesn’t make them pay. We have youth at WR as well. It was a tough spot and I’m not sure if anyone on the bench could have done better. The thing that sucks is we will never know. We got beat by a walk-on (I know his history). Dan Mullen pulled his version of JG. JG is our Franks who has not been benched and we keep rolling on. He may be the best option, but others need to get a shot in game situations so you can determine that. He is clearly a practice guy but that doesn’t always translate. If this is a throw away year get the other guys some experience.

One more thing, we need better LB play. Crouch and banks are catching blocks and not attacking. HT is good but he is getting run through a little bit. They need to mix things up and make people uncomfortable.

I'm far from being a football expert like many here on VN are.

I also believe in trying to be honest and fair and call things like I see them and give credit where it's earned and be critical when it's earned too.

I agree with most that JG probably reached his ceiling last year or maybe the year before but I think he's gotten a little better by having the same OC and system for this 2nd year but that he'll never become a top SEC type QB.

I give JG full credit for never giving up and never quitting no matter how bad the beatings are that he takes or how badly he's abused by our fans, I have to respect him for those things.

He certainly makes mistakes that he shouldn't like throwing a pass when he's about to get mauled again instead of throwing it out of bounds so we can at least punt the ball instead of throwing a INT.

I still agree that he doesn't read the D as well as he should so he can make the proper checkdowns.

I've heard all offseason and all this season that the O line at Tennessee should be 1 of the best, elite O lines in all of college football and I was looking forward to seeing us push D lines around and giving our QB good protection so our WR's and TE's had time to run good routes and get some separation and our QB had time to make good passes.

I simply have NOT seen that type of elite or even really good O line play.

I believe that our coaches see mistakes and problems with our O line that that's why they keep switching O linemen around and working to try to find the right mixes that really work based on what players they have available.

JG is part of the problem but our O line is also a huge problem and NOT 1 of the top 5 best QB's in the country could do well behind our line that lest D linemen into our backfield in 1 or 2 seconds.

JG threw 2 great, long TD passes in the 1st half and that WAS spreading the field but UGA didn't stop stacking the box, instead the brought lots more blitz packages that our O line and RB's simply could NOT stop and give JG any time to find a open guy to throw the ball to.

No RB can run well when there's no open crease to run through or when the D players hit them as soon as they get the ball and that's not on our QB.

Last season our coaches would bench JG and give another QB a chance to try to prove he could do better and I expected that to happen yesterday too but it didn't, WHY?

We have at least 3 or 4 more QB's sitting on the bench so WHY didn't our coaches give at least 1 of them a chance to get some real game experience and try to show that they could so better?

Is JG really that much better than the other 3 or 4 QB's we have on the bench?

Has our QB recruiting made that many mistakes in their evaluations?

Or was it that our coaches saw that our great O linemen simply weren't good enough to stop the UGA D players and didn't want to risk some other QB getting mauled like JG was and maybe getting hurt?

There's lots of things to think about on the O side of the ball including far too many penalties.

Our D played pretty well including the awesome goal line stand they made.

Also considering how long they were on the field getting worn down.

We still gave up too many yards and too many big plays.

Also too many attempted arm tackles and NOT wrapping up like they should have been taught way back in middle school.

I totally understand that Covid has lost us lots of coaching time so our staff could better coach these guys up but that can't be a excuse because all other teams have had to deal with the same Covid problems.

I believe we all HAVE seen our player roster get better with better players recruited every year that Pruitt and his great staff has been here and they've done really well considering our lack of big Wins so far.

The things we all know for a fact is that Pruitt totally HATES to lose and that he'll try to do anything he can to get more WINS.

I also believe that if Pruitt sees a solid opportunity to upgrade his coaching staff and improve our coaching that he'll do that too as long as Fulmer and the big $$$ guys are willing to provide the $$$ to buy out the remaining contract of the coach he wants to replace if the new incoming coach is seen by all to be a solid upgrade at coaching and recruiting.

I think Pruitt will make the tough choice to even replace a good friend as a coach as long as he has the commitment of a better coach and recruiter ready to join his staff instantly.

We ARE on the way up but it's a long, tough mountain to climb and taking the, last, big step is the hardest to accomplish but I still believe that Pruitt is the right guy to get it done as long as he's given the time like Clemson gave their HC time to keep building and working on it.

I hate UGa and Smart so much and their dirty playing that I can't wait until we can stomp a mudhole in them!

VFL...GBO!!!

Why would any team stack the box in 3rd and long situations?
Fair point. They wouldn’t. Unfortunately all the film on Youtube right now is highlights which don’t show many first and second down plays so I can’t provide much evidence right now, but the 2or 3 2nd or 3rd and short plays I did find suggest UGA wasn’t stacking the box. The 2nd and 8 play shows they were respecting the pass.

I don't think a QB is the complete answer but if this staff really feels the other qbs on our roster aren't good enough for next season, they absolutely must get the best QB on the transfer market into this program. There's no conceivable way they can go with JG again next season if he decides to come back....again. They just can't.

We also need a couple of really special CB's, a nasty/physical TE and a bruising TB in the 225-230 range vs these small-ish backs like Chandler and EG.

I just think most posters are BURNED OUT
with J G. No personal animosity on my part,
but how many college kids do you see
playing 5 and with this covid maybe 6 years.
If he is trying to impress NFL scouts I'm
sure he already has. It's time to move on.

JG should have been benched for giving Georgia 12 points and momentum.

Yet, he got to play the whole game.

He was directly responsible for a certain number of points but the amount of momentum lost after each bad turnover, which eventually led to ineptitude in moving the football on offense and the defense getting worn down isn't quantifiable.

We had a goose egg in the 2nd half. Any good team knows if you blitz long enough and keep working your plan he will implode. Georgia couldn't run the football either until late but their QB was able to evade the rush and the major TO.

Last the inexplicable penalties and just blatantly out of position on some plays is unexceptable. Our team drove UGA down the field on occasion with stupidity alone. Several of us saw some concerns in the first two games.

If you can’t run the ball and you don’t have time to throw then no QB will look good..... it wasn’t a scheme that beat us.... it was the defensive front of Georgia was that much better than the guys blocking them.... other teams won’t be able to replicate that

If we have a majority of "5 Star Talent" on the offensive line this year, where do you go to get better linemen? Are they over rated or not coached properly? Too many penalties from GA just shifting their line. Every shift seemed to confuse our linemen in terms who they were supposed to block allowing 1 or 2 of them to come through mostly untouched to blow up the play. If we can't run for more than 20 yards in a game against top tier talent then we will be forever a "middle of the pack" SEC team.

JG is not great and is only good for short stretches. At this point, he should be able to hold onto the ball and not fumble when he is hit. OL failures contributed to JGs poor performance. At least he was not over throwing the receivers like the previous two weeks. In ability to sustain drives in early 3rd quarter gassed our defense which lead to very little resistance in the 4th. AL, AU, A&M & FL will present similar issues for our OL if they can't correct their blocking schemes.

Who dials up a hurry up shotgun pass play on 3rd and 1 when you have a lead in the 3rd qtr? Even before the interception, Chaney lost me with that call right there

Lmao that game was not even as close as the final acore indicated... Get real...

We had the lead until JG imploded with 4 turnovers.
We were playing right there with them until then. If he could've taken care of the ball, and we'd just punted, it's a different game altogether.

You can laugh your whatever off, that's up to you.
I'm not even a sunshine pumper ... we just played probably the best D in the country who's gonna make more than UT and JG look like they made UT and JG look yesterday.

I'm not saying that JG is the only problem we have, and that the next QB to play and BAM ... National Championship ... but we're in a much better place than 3 games in last year, much less previous seasons before that. Folks that can't see that are just angry to the point of irrational about the game last night.

Now, that's just my opinion, and you're welcome to yours as well.

We scored our first TD on a bad snap, and our other 2 TDs were long pass plays where JG lobs the ball into the air to a covered receiver and hopes the WR bails him out... We had -1 rushing yard... If you think that game was even as close as the score, just stop watching football now, because you understand literally less than nothing...

Wow sir, I sure am sorry I tried to express my opinion on a message board where fans of the same team are talking about football. Man, yes sir, I sure do apologize for getting in the way of such a scholarly fan such as yourself. Yes sir, I'll try to remember to keep my opinion to myself from here on out, I sure will. Yep, I forgot how dumb I was. Thank you sir for reminding me. And also, I think I'll take you up on your fine suggestion to stop watching football now, because since my opinion differed from yours, mine was obviously wrong, and I'm a fool moron.

On the flipside, I got up like every Sunday and went to church. We had a good service ... good singing, good testimonies, good Sunday School lesson (taught by my son no less) and the Lord helped me preach, and folks were helped and encouraged in living for the Lord in this world. I liked it so good, I think I'll go back tonight and try it again!

The Lord is good to me, and I love Him. He saved me back on January 5th, 1992, and I've never been the same since. Oh, and I'm going to Heaven when I die too! When I set my affections on things above, the outcome of a ball game isn't near as meaningful or depressing, no matter the outcome ...

Once again, thank you for the encouragement and the good advice. I pray you have a blessed and wonderful day.

Can this competent qb play o line?
No but a competent Qb wont hang on to the ball when he knows the defense is coming to knock his face off. Oline wasnt great but u can help them out by getting rid of the ball quicker. My 13yr old son plays DE. We watched the game together and the 1st thing that came out of his mouth was "dad why yal Qb holding the ball so long."

Strange that anyone thinks he's an SEC starter
