I was reading this article on SI....I was really surprised. I am convinced that football is the most popular sport in the US, but the salaries don't seem to point to that. Bball and baseball seem to own these salaries. My thought is that there are so many more games played that there is simply more money available. I would think that TV contracts would make up for that, though. Thoughts?

Pretty much, once you look into stadium capacities and such, combined with the number of players on contract.

yeah, at first glance I found it very bizarre. after thinking about the finances of it all, though, it makes perfect sense. i just feel that football players deserve more cash for the beatings they take than some of these other "athletes" (looking at race car drivers and golfers). endorsements play a large role in a lot of these too.

look at the size of a football roster compared to that of an NBA or MLB roster

NBA has, what, 9 players? MLB is somewhere in the 20's, NFL is something like 56. Throw a salary cap on top of that.
