Pride of the Southland needs some changes

They play "Neck" all the time.

Yea they played "Neck" during the Georgia game and I saw maybe 10 people in the entire stadium moving their hands up and down. Its awesome to watch LSU when they do it. The Chinese Bandits is also a sweet thing LSU band does also. They do it on 4th down and the crowd goes nuts. There are tons of other schools that do stuff to get the crowd involved also. Id like to see Tennessee in the mix.

Show 3: The high school band that went first was better.

1. You're comparing a great high school band to a good collegiate band
2. The high school band works on one show every year. They had been working on that show for about 2 months.
3. The collegiate band was working on their third show of eight in one season (most I can ever remember the Pride having to perform). They worked on that show for probably a week and a half, max.

I understand that it's easy to sit there and argue about how bad something is, but go ahead and come up with seven ideas (minus Circle Drill) that the Pride should have done this year that don't overlap one of the ideas of the last two years. At some point it becomes difficult to come up with ideas that will entertain the masses, yet still be feasible to transcribe to full band music.

One thing I've noticed is that other bands seem to be so much louder than ours. At first I thought it's because we sit directly across the field from opposing teams bands, but it seems even their pep bands they bring to games are louder than ours.

where you're located makes a bigger deal than you may think

As said above, it might be where you sit. Another is that if you watch other band, they stand and play. Its much easier to play, as well as play loudly, when you're standing not moving.

"Opening the T", "Circle Drill", forming an eagle and unrolling an American flag in the middle of it while Lee Greenwood climaxes the finale of his "God Bless the USA"*. These are are the visual effects that make the Pride memorable to fans. Can you name one visual that those louder bands do besides stand in a formation that looks like a band concert?

* from the halftime of the 1985 Sugar Bowl. The roar of the crowd was deafening.

The Ohio Band is fun to watch, but unlike them, we actually march. Meh. Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy was simply degrading in my book.

Forget the band just let me take control of the PA system for a few.....

What I would play to some Tennessee highlights on the Jumbotron if I had a chance. at 1:25

You want to get the crowd all riled up, DJ Breeze is the answer.....

That would not play well over the speakers at all. Our stadium's sound system blows.

I hate the DB band. They're obnoxious and rude. That being said, they are a very good band.

What happened to the bagpipes they would bring in once a year. That was an excellent show. I would get chill bumps and tears when they concluded with Amazing Grace.

Dear God. I made it through a minute and a half and then I had to shut it down. That was horrible. As Doc used to say, "That looked like an abortion but to to have an abortion you have to have conception, and you have none." Anyone know if Doc is still alive? If he saw that, I'm guessing no. He would have had a stroke on the spot. Who the hell came up with that? They should be shot.

When they brought out Pat, some guy behind me yelled, "hasn't she suffered enough?"

I was at the georgia game and I looked over at my brother and said...."this is the gayest halftime show I've ever seen in my life."

Ill answer within the quote.

The band members that I knew were not going through the motions. They put a lot into what they put on the field. Unfortunately, the past few years, the talent level has dropped a bit because of the drop in numbers. Better recruiting and more wins by the football team will help.

Practice 7 hours a week + all day Saturday at the games and your energy is pretty much spent.

A lot of band members were excited just to get Neck added to the rotation, but as it's been mentioned... this rotation scratches maybe 10% of the flipfolders, which have some decent tunes.

Some others may have better answers, but that's what I got.

Who are you? I marched from 07 to 10.

Part of the reason other bands are more entertaining in the stands is that they don't work nearly as hard on marching. They may have 2 marching rehearsals a week, working on a max of 3-4 shows for the year. The Pride this year will be performing 8 halftime shows and pregame. We can't just rest on the laurels of last week's show, because we're doing it again, and spend 3 rehearsals on stand tunes. The Pride works on those songs 1 night a week, and that's for less than an hour. It's hard to expect lots of selection when they don't even have enough time to practice them.

Not true. First of all, the more recent shows couldn't be more than a few charts at best. There was so little marching at the Georgia game it might as well have been concert band. Second, Most songs that bands play in the stands have been around for decades. Virtually every song that Georgia's band plays in the stands I heard when I was in high school (in the 1970's) and they get the fans fired up. Those tunes are passed down, don't require a ton of work. Some of the top songs for the stands have been cut in the past decade, things the fans really responded to. As for lack of practice by other bands... UT has always marched a different show each week, nothing new there. When I was in we had one "throw away" each hear (special guest like Charlie Daniels or Concert Choir). The rest were straight marching. We didn't stand and play except on the Alma Mater.

We did have one advantage over the band now. We were on quarters when I marched, so school didn't start until mid-September, but we had to be back late August to get ready for the first football game. We ended up having about 3-4 weeks of band camp and it showed in our performances.

The show that the high school performed was special for the UT game, not their regular performance. As for coming up with new drill, it wasn't a problem for former drill designers. There are a million songs to choose from that can be charted in a million ways. If the current drill designers can't come up with the necessary originality, it's time to hire someone new.
