Preview of BG Offense

No offense to BG but if they beat the Orange, we are not considering this a ballgame. Not Gonna Happen!

I am pretty sure we have the corners to cover 1 on 1 with BG. The wide splits will not matter. Speed Kills on D and we have it in spades.

They lost 59-31 to WKU, 68-17 to Wisconsin, 26-14 W. Mich, 41-24 Ball State, and 51-17 to N. Ill last year. I am taking the over for betting, offense doesn't stand a chance.

Critical factor is pressure. If the DL can be disruptive then all running fast will do is give UT more time on O to score points.

If they push pace then I just don't see how they hold UT under 50 points... conservatively.

Just a note on the defense, it was coached last season by a wide receiver's coach who had no idea what he was doing. Not saying any results will be different this year, however BG did finally hire an actual defensive coordinator.

So, last year's poorly coached D, in their first year of new schemes?

Yes, but with a lot of new faces which could be argued is a better thing than having remaining starters adapt to yet another scheme.

Many of the complaints last year were that the coaching staff decided to get away from what the Clawson staff did on defense and it ultimately hurt the entire unit. There was a ton of zone coverage played along with man coverage with ridiculous ten-yard cushions which allowed easy yards. It was an abomination.

It was said tongue in cheek.

I actually hope you guys are really good and provide a stiff test for our guys going into OU and SEC play. If you are that good, I'll have problems deciding if you're really good, or if we're bad. (I'll play the 'we shoulda'...) But it'll be good for the team if we face a good team and measure up.

I believe our defense will be tested plenty on Saturday, but I am not sure that their defense will be able to match our offense. The people on here that make remarks about the losses BG had last year, are not taking into consideration that BG lost it's starting quarterback in the season opener. BG's offense returns almost all their offensive starters with the addition of their best quarterback. Their defense is the big question mark, losing almost all of their starters. This could be a close game in the first half, unless our defense shuts down their quarterback. The second half will be all UT.

Johnson is without a doubt better than Knapke, the biggest question marks we have are 1) if Johnson will be able to withstand getting hit again, he hasn't seen any contact in camp and 2) how much did he soak in last year after having to watch from the sidelines?

As far as the offense, be prepared for a mix of screens and short range passes along with the occasional deep threat. Roger Lewis is the main deep guy so I suspect he'll receive the most attention. The run game is pretty vanilla with a lot of straight dives and off-tackle plays and they'll run them in succession if there's any success.

From our perspective...

On D:

Don't expect much blitzing. We'll probably try to get pressure with our front 4. Expect lots of man coverage with safety help over the top.

On O:

Expect a lot of designed runs with both QB option and pass options built into them.

Should be a good challenge for our defense. A mostly passing team will put a lot of pressure on our DE to get into the backfield and pressure Johnson. If you've read more than one article on here, you know we take pride in our pass rush defense. Very excited for this game. I enjoy watching teams I've never seen play before, especially OOC teams that have in the past shown up ready to play the SEC. Good having you on board here at VN by the way.

Local ohio sports teams fanboy says BG offense is legit and Tennessee is going to be in big trouble. I laughed.

Glad to be here! I guess the only thing we feel good about regarding pass rush is that BG returns the second most experienced OL in the FBS this year in terms of total games started. I imagine the run game will be more difficult for BG to establish given the size and speed disparity up front, but we're used to seeing that against P5 schools.

For what its worth, Phil Steele rates BG's units in the MAC as QB 1st, WR 1st, OL 1st, RB 2nd, and Special Teams 1st.

I realize it's the MAC, but that should still get your attention. Very experienced.

“We have to try to manipulate them and try to use their speed against them at times with misdirections and keeping their defensive lineman honest and their linebackers honest,” he said. “We like to use misdirection and stuff like that. But they’re a team that if one guy takes the wrong step, they’re going to shoot a gap and make the play. It definitely shows up on film.”

The last Group of 5 team to come into Tennessee with an experienced line and an experienced quarterback returning from injury was Utah State. Halfway through the first quarter Chuckie Keaton had already hit the turf what felt like 10 times. They managed 7 points all game.

If Tennessee gets that same level of pressure, BG's pass attack doesn't stand a chance. If your line can protect against Curt Maggitt and Derek Barnett (who each had 10 sacks last year) I like your chances to hit 20 points in this game. If not... it will be over quickly.

In my view, the best chance for a BG upset is Barnett and Maggitt being slowed down and BG relying on their slot receivers. The outside receivers will have a tough time against Cam Sutton and Emmanuel Moseley. If the slot receivers can exploit our safeties (who are experienced, but how good are they in man-to-man?) and nickelbacks (who are unexperienced), Bowling Green could put up enough to pull the upset. I just don't see it happening.

Looking at your schedule, on Saturday Johnson will face the best pass rush he will all year against Barnett, Maggitt, and Co. It will be a test for him to see if he's fully recovered.

M Foreman is a very good cover corner. Just from a pass coverage respect, there isn't that much drop off from Gaulden to him. Gaulden was much better vs the run.
