Press Conference (Merged)

It's the ultimately wins games thing that is the problem. The human side has to have the winning games side to justify a $3 million salary.

Phil Fulmer is a GREAT Tennessean. It has been a honor and priviledge to watch him lead our Vols to victory over the years. I didn't get to see the press conference yet, and I'm sure it was emotional. It's time to say goodbye to a big orange legend...."the national champions are clad in BIG ORANGE!" You earned that line from John Ward Phil. God Bless You. You're a good man...

If that's true, they were in the silent minority today.

easy to be supportive and outraged when the guy is going out of the door. edit: i'd be surprised if some team leaders weren't interviewed before fulmer got the ax.

Phil is a great man, and has done a lot for the university. I hope he stays in the university. This had to be done, but it still hurts a little. I think it is because we are so used to him being the coach. Maybe our next coach will bring good memories too in this college football carousel.

If the opinions of the players were solicited as part of this decision, everyone in the Athletic department should be fired immediately. That kind of foolishness is how schools end up with the Todd Bozemans of the world as their coaches.

The precedent has already been set that we will.

Hat I missed the precedent. I would think we would set standards because the dismissal of Fulmer was going to be a mess because of his long ties to he university. I just glad it finally happen. I do not want to get into a wholesome coaching relationship again. We should go outside the family this last relationship costs us dearly. We as you know are behind the power curve in offense and defense schemes. Times passed us by and we never adjusted.

Where can we watch the press conference now that it is over? The utsports.com link isn't showing it anymore since its not live

As to CPF going elsewhere...and I like and admire him very much...how many people came calling after 98? I don't think recruits will follow him anywhere, but possibly lose a couple if he would land the Auburn job. However, if Tubbs is gone do you truly believe the Auburn folks will turn to CPF??? I just don't see that happening. They want and hope for the same things we do, and a move to CPF over Tubbs is probably lateral in nature.

I hope he stays on with the school and gets the credit and accolades as we move forward and have success.

As to the players, you know a lot of Mike Davis players loved him at Indiana and did not want him to leave, Robert Vaden in fact went with him, but players can become very attached to those who ennable them, and they easily come to beleive their "warts and moles" are in reality "beauty marks" if coaches, fans and parents tell them so. Present players input is definitely colored by the emotions of the moment, and we are all to some degree more emotional to the plus side for CPF at this moment.

To CPF...again thanks for the memories (I actually remember his playing days), stay on at Tennessee, show that true Volunteer spirit, and best wishes for the future...BUT,as much as I hate to say it, it was time.

Tears usually bring about sympathy, even from the disgruntled. I don't question his love for the university, but this was imminent. In the long run, it was the best thing to do. Personally, I think CF's tears were tears of bitterness and anger. You could hear it in his voice. He thanked Doug Dickey, Joe Johnston, etc, but no thanks to MH. No thanks to Majors, Cutcliffe, etc. He was really pissed! Didn't even look at MH. When you look at this situation from a coaching standpoint, I don't feel sorry for him. He could have laid down his armor much earlier and all this would have been avoided. Every couch with tenure at any university could feel the same way. Its just part of the business of college football.

It would be good if he does coach next year at one of our opponent's schools. We would have an edge there cause the guy just flat out cannot coach.

Now they all come out of the woodworks. The same people who were jawing for his head and writing profanity laced messages about him, his weight, his family, his play calling, etc. are now SO SORRY he's been let go. I knew this would be the case.

People are "just now realizing" how much Fulmer has put into UT. He gave most of his life to this program and except for two years coached a very successful football program. No one cared about the student athletes he helped form into NFL players or, better yet, model citizens in the community and sports world. No one cared about the 13 years he led a program to a National Champ, SEC crowns, bowl wins, etc. while almost half of the other SEC schools were put on probation, stayed home during bowl season, or sent their graduates to the CFL or NFL Europe.
Now...now that he has been asked to step down we are all realizing what UT had when Fulmer was coach. Too late now, let's get ready for some rougher times as our program starts looking for another coach.

I agree 100% phillip fulmer is all class. a great leader and it appears he had not lost control of this team. it looks like the players are taking this tough. they should be, its mostly their fault. it was time for a change regardless of where the blame falls. fulmer did not adjust to the speed of the spread and stayed stagnant when everybody else in the country adapted to the times. i really hope that he stays at tennessee in some capacity, really would hate to see him coaching next year.

Thanks for joining us on VN, Phil.

please find me one poster saying they misjudged his play-calling ability based on the press conf. Personal shots I don't agree with but a coach's play-calling is out of bounds?

pretty emotional
didn't sound like he wanted to quit...

I listened to with a co-worker on Finebaum's show, and he got a couple of jabs in..

In the middle of the press conference Finebaum cut in and quote
"I don't feeel sorry for the fat ass, he's getting $6 Million dollars"
Paul Finebaum is a holier than thou jackass whose opinion I value as much as the slugs that try to get at my dogs food bowl.
