Press Conference (Merged)

pretty emotional
didn't sound like he wanted to quit...

I listened to with a co-worker on Finebaum's show, and he got a couple of jabs in..

In the middle of the press conference Finebaum cut in and quote
"I don't feeel sorry for the fat ass, he's getting $6 Million dollars"

get espn news fellas

Ill admit I wanted fulmer gone more than anyone but after watching him near tears the whole time i cant help but feel sorry for him.

After watching on of the icons of the University basically get forced out it would be hard for any UT fan, Fulmer supporter or not, not to feel some sadness.

I agree 100% phillip fulmer is all class. a great leader and it appears he had not lost control of this team. it looks like the players are taking this tough. they should be, its mostly their fault. it was time for a change regardless of where the blame falls. fulmer did not adjust to the speed of the spread and stayed stagnant when everybody else in the country adapted to the times. i really hope that he stays at tennessee in some capacity, really would hate to see him coaching next year.

No matter what the circumstances, it was going to be a tough split. Did anyone expect former players or the current ones to be happy about this?

There is alot of division there. Rick Russo said when they tried to get the players to move for the media, players shouted "why should we move for them. They are the ones that started this B.S." (they did not use the initials). On WVLT Mark Packer has alot of former Vols on a panel including Reggie Coleman and Fuad Reveiz (sp?). They are pissed at the fans and MH saying they did Fulmer wrong. They even had Heath Shular on the phone and pressured him in to saying it was wrong (Heath didn't want to say it but they kept saying , tell us what you think). You can see Fulmer is not just dissapointed but he is pissed. The division is going to remain for a while it seems to me. I see the potential of a Johnny Majors type split.

the current players need to take a big long look in the mirror before they start blaming the media. If they want to say it's not CPF's coaching then that leaves only one other culprit. I know they love they guy but it's not all on the media

he is family and a great man, but he didn't perform or put the trophies in the case. I will be sad for a while and will make sure to be at the UK game. a true hall of fame coach, going to be hard to replace.

I also didn't like how foster responded to everything. He did show emotion though...something this team has lacked despite what he wants to tell us.

I wanted Fulmer gone as much as the next person. However, that press conference made me realize what all he has done for the University and I will be at the last home game to honor him.

With that said, I thought it was pretty classless of him and the football players with their offhanded comments directed at Mike Hamilton. Especially, Josh Briscoe's skinny ass with the question about making dollars driving the decisions. If he could catch a ball and stand up through a 15 mile an hour wind at the same time I would give him a little credibility, but that was a cheap shot.

Imagine if Phil takes another job this year how many of our recruits would follow him. My last couple of years on campus are going to be just great....

If football is that big a component of your on-campus life, then you're not doing college right.

What he said. And what hat said, but in gentler language.

I love CPF, I will always be grateful for what he brought this school. But it was time. There was nothing happening on the field. It's either coaching or it's players. It's not the media (although I do agree that they're filthy vultures).

If I gave a crap about "the human side" of things, I'd watch Dr. Phil.

. . .that's ironic!! It's that very Human Side you speak of that recruits players, motivates them to play hard, and ultimately wins games. I hope everyone will be happy two or three years from now!

Fulmer is a good man, but not a coaching god. I remember back in '92 when most people were making noise about removing Majors and you had the same people predicting the "end of Tennessee Football" and hiring Fulmer was the "worst thing Tennessee could do". Now, 16 years later, some of the same people are saying the same exact things about Fulmer. Fulmer, like Majors, will move on and so will Tennessee Football.

Would we have been happy if we remained stagnant in our coaching situation? I think not.

Yeah, I bet the Alabama players just love the warm and fuzzy side of their head coach.

That was quite possibly one of the saddest scenes I've witnessed in a long time. It is obvious that he loves UT, but especially the players, who are like his kids. I am also one of the many that was hoping for a change at the top, and this is probably just an emotional gut reaction that I hope fades with time, but I can't shake the feeling that we might have made a mistake...hope the feeling is temporary.

the players don't like losing any more than you guys do. I'm sure many of them want a change.

This is what seperated us from the rest of the SEC. This man loved this university. He gave his entire life to this university. I love Tennessee football, but it's not all about wins and losses. We could bring in a mercenary like Saban and win some games. But to me it's not just about winning, and no one we ever bring in will bring to the table the other stuff Philip Fulmer brought. Coach Fulmer exemplifies what made Tennessee a special place. I can't help but resent those people who probably don't even care about the school except for Saturdays in the fall are taking glee in the end of his tenure.

Michigan was special because it was Michigan, and it's coach was representative of that.

Nebraska was Nebraska because of those men who bled red and white.

Penn State is Penn State because of Joe Paterno.

None of those fan bases will ever be the same, and neither will we. No matter who we bring in he will view Tennessee as a job rather than a way of life. No matter how successful a new coach may be it will not be as sweet as what those Penn State fans are experiencing this year, and Joe Pa had some bad years himself.

Kind of like the way Spurrier was at Florida. They loved their schools.
