People need some skin in the game. If everything is free to the individual we will have enormous supply chain issues such as what you see in other countries with socialized medicine. The wait times are enormous. Very few liberals understand that Medicare is not free, hence they don't really know what they're talking about when they wish for Medicare for all. Ask any senior and they'll tell you about the thousands they spend on healthcare every yr. My parents say it's about $10K/yrFree in the context of the post to which I had replied. We both know that means not charged to individuals or their proxies.
The story of the midterms is who counts the votes and the voting populace getting dumber, Boomer. The student loan stuff barely registered on any polling data. It's a great strategy, and dems use it a lot more effectively than republicans. Republicans promise things like fixing the border issues; dems promise to give people stuff - like not having to pay off student loans. People with student loans love dems, and blame republicans for stopping the free stuff. Dems can promise free stuff that has absolutely no chance of happening and then destroy the other guys when they block it. It's the appearance of taking something away from them that gets individuals to the polls. That's likely the story of the midterms when you get right down to it.
