Those on SNAP pay approximately 17% what someone not on SNAP would pay for an average priced meal.

I would pay $17.05 to feed my family of 5 an average priced meal. Someone on SNAP would pay $2.85 to feed their family of 5 that same meal. At three meals a day, 365 days a year, that is a $15,549 out of pocket difference. After taxes, the SNAP subsidy would be about $20k a year compared to the full priced wage earner. And that is just for this one program.

That seems like a pretty generous social safety net to me.

Well by that metric, America kind of sucks in relative terms.

I'd rather take 15 bucks and eat just about anywhere else in the world than here.

I think you have a fundamental misunderstanding of SNAP benefits. Using a family of 5 in Tennessee with the maximum allowable gross income of $3,693 (130% of federal poverty level) and using the median numbers for rent, child care, and utilities, that family of 5 could qualify for a possible $705/month in SNAP assistance.

The least healthy foods are by far the least expensive foods. Healthy foods are more expensive. Many of those receiving SNAP are in poor health and need healthy foods but can't afford to purchase them. A couple of bags of apples will cost the same as nearly a month's worth of Ramen.

I very likely do have a misunderstanding of SNAP, as the graph you posted earlier is about all the education I have ever received on it. 😁

Crunching the numbers, it seems the max earning family of 5 still qualifies for enough to feed the family 3 average meals a day for nearly 5 months. I still think it is a pretty robust social safety net program if it allows for $8400 of annual assistance to a family that is making $40 - $45k a year. Granted, my idea of what constitutes a robust social safety net have been influenced by travels to 3d world countries full of starving people who don't make $700/year.

(BTW, this version of BV, the educated, informative one who is willing to share worthy info with those of us who are willing to learn, is a much better version than the snarky one who just wants to win internet style points. Thanks for the new info to consider, I appreciate it.)

What they don't teach the poor, or anyone really, in this country is that you need (and crave) less unhealthy food when you switch your diet up feed your body and brain properly. Net cost will be close. When you have a properly structured diet, your body doesn't scream for all the crap.

Growing up, mom cooked proper I'd say 90% of the time. Although we did have some snacks, they were not free for all. One snack between dinner and bedtime was it. We had corn flakes and rice krispies for cereals. And the ingredient list in the 70's and 80's on those a bit different then. Most all our veggies were grown out back and put up in multiple ways for the year. Can't recall when they started "enriching" our flour and rices though.

literally can't. The number of openings in these higher level courses/degrees can't be filled by the number of appropriate American applicants.

the half we do keep is a HUGE plus to our nation.
