They went from the party of KKK, lynchings and white supremacy, to the party of figuring out which group to pander to for votes/power. It's just that they've gotten REALLY bad at figuring out who to pander to, as that group has shrunk on a startling pace with fringe, unpopular stances.

They basically accepted losing the Southern vote for a generation, in favor of gaining the black vote forever. But now, they've drifted so far into craziness that they're losing the black vote too.
