Prepare for Steele

Is the fact that his best year as a head coach he only won 3 games and has a 9-36 record reason enough?

no, ill wait and see if he has developed more. One unsuccessful attempt at coaching shouldn't doom someone forever. As i have said before, he would not be my first coach and I would prefer more proven success but we are not in ideal positions anymore. If the folks that have forgot more about football than I will ever know, decide that Steele is the guy, he has my support.

So we are going to roit the hiring of a former vol that is currently a coordinator? Interesting

Yeah let's look crazier then we already do right now. Steele would be a good hire IMHO because I think that he will surround himself with great coaches.

His head coaching record was at Baylor long before Baylor invested any real money in the football program. Steele would end up proving many of his doubters wrong at Tennessee!

If we get Steele then the good old boy network is is alive and well again. This is what got Phil in trouble before, can’t think outside his comfort zone.

If Fulmer goes the coordinator route it may set UT back another 4-5 years, because many other schools have proven head coaches. why would a recruit chose UT and a coordinator over a school with a proven winning coach?

Georgia's last two recruiting classes have been pretty darn good (a lot better than ours) with a coach who before this season was anything but a proven winning coach. Oklahoma's has been pretty good with a non-proven coach as was Clemson's when Dabo took over.

This narrative is hilarious to me. The most current success in college football is coming from the route that we are scared to death as a fan base to go down.

Spurrier won at DUKE. It's COACHING!

Would much rather have Martin, who is 20 years younger and has a much higher ceiling, but maybe Steele could turn into our Orgeron, who after a rough start put together a solid year at LSU.

That being said, Steele is not on my list.

No one said he was as good as Spurrier? Spurrier won at Duke before anyone spent real money on their football programs. Poor example.

Steele has coached with 6 different National Champioinship winning coaches. He would be a fine choice here at Tennessee, compared to the list of realistic available options!

Well Mississippi State hired a coordinator, Georgia hired a coordinator, LSU hired a coordinator who had a terrible track record, Vanderbilt hired a coordinator, and Ole Miss has an interim they are sticking with. Dan Mullen had ties to UF and Scott Frost had ties to Nebraska. There are only a handful of sure bet coaches and they aren't leaving so I am not sure what you expect anyone to do. With the exception of Vanderbilt, those are all better jobs than UT right now. As far as Jimbo Fisher and A & M, who knows the logic behind that one?

Just saw this name pop up in some articles about Mel Tucke meeting with Fulmer. DC at Georgia/ assistant HC. NFL experience. His resume is seems top notch. Havent heard much about him just until now. Any opinions on this possible decision for HC?

Do you watch college football? In the playoffs there are three coaches of four who went from assistant to head coach. Dabo was a wr coach. The other two were coordinators and are in their first or second year on the job. All have recruited great. What have you been watching the last few years.

I don't have a problem with a coordinator.

As long as its not Steele. He would be a terrible hire. There is a reason the longest he has stayed at one place is three years.

Winning is no longer a requirement for the Tennessee Head coaching position.
The new requirements are
1# must be cheap
2# must be a buddy of the AD
3# must have coached with the AD 20 years ago

Really? Orgeron is an average coach at best and we will see it over the next couple of years like we did when he was at OM and USC. He was LSU settling. We don't need to do that, imo.

Probably not far from the truth. And really wouldn't be much of a surprise when you look at how Fulmer dealt with replacing assistants the last 10 years he coached.

I think Fulmer is smart enough to want Steele as defensive coach but not head coach.
Thanks, Teddy, for avoiding the mass knee-jerking fest and making the first statement on this thread. Steele's a lifer as DC and Phil knows this far better than all these whining winnows; decrying the sky's falling once again. I'm still guessing Les is a foregone conclusion as our new HC, with Tee at OC and Phil Steele as UT's new DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR. GBO!

I’d be good with that. I do think Steele would have success as HC, but having him just focus on defense would be ideal. Not sure he would leave auburn though

Do not want Steele or Martin as HC. They would be fine as coordinators. Need to get Venables. He will get the job done!

Auburn DC Kevin Steele will NOT be at the Broyles Award in Little Rock today, likely en route to the University of Tennessee.

Per @Volquest_Rivals sources, Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele is also in NYC today and could meet with Tennessee officials for a second time.

If they hire Kevin Steele I won't even watch the presser. Don't know how much @Vol_Football i'll even watch! The man is 9-36 as a HC! How's he even a option @phillipfulmer... This is mind blowing!!

Top 10 in all-time wins. Top 10 in facilities. Top 10 in resources. Top 10 in attendance/fan base. And #Vols choices are Kevin Steele, Mel Tucker or Jeremy Pruitt? My head hurts.
