Premiere League & World Soccer Thread

What? You’ve never heard of Sheriff from the Maldova National League? They are world class and probably going to win the UCL!

-Real Madrid fans, probably.
I love it. I read somewhere that the average domestic attendance pre-pandemic was under 1000 for Sheriff. It has to be 1 of the biggest upsets in the last few years of the CL I would imagine

I think they should leave it as is. What is the alternative?
They already got rid of it unfortunately, this is the first year it won’t be used.
When I first started watching UEFA matches, I found it to be a bit confusing, but overtime I started appreciating the rule and the drama that came with it, sad to see it go.

I always found it interesting, didn’t realize they were taking it away.

I wonder what the reasoning was? How will they be deciding ties over two legs now? Overtime?

From UEFA’s website…
With the decision to remove this rule, ties in which the two teams score the same number of goals over the two legs would be not decided on the number of goals scored away, but two 15-minute periods of extra time are played at the end of the second leg and in case the teams score the same number of goals or no goals during this extra time, kicks from the penalty mark would determine the team which qualifies to the next stage of the competition.

Meh. Just opportunities for players to get injured imo. Not to mention, teams have their league games, possible cup games, and champions league on top of that. Does not leave much room to rest.

Barca lost 3-nil to Benfica yesterday. The next matchups don’t get any easier. They have to coach change soon.

On an unrelated note. The u12 girls team I am coaching won our league quarterfinal yesterday. I parked the bus at 6-1, we finished the game 8-1. A simple formation change has made all the difference with the team. Switched from a 4-3-3 to a 4-1-4-1 and haven’t lost since.

They’ve always had extra-time as an option. This is just changing to the way the League Cup semifinal is in England. I could take or leave the away goals rule. It’s not as bad as the well-intentioned Golden Goal rule that FIFA put in place for a couple of WC’s that ended up completely paralyzing teams out of fear of conceding, but I do think it leads to negative play at times. Especially when a team comes home having won the first leg 1-0.

I would have been fine with them keeping it with one minor tweak. For whatever reason, the away goals rule remained in play once the tie went to extra time. So you ended up with the away team effectively playing 30 minutes of Golden Goal, because a team scoring twice in extra time at that level is practically unheard of. Just play the 30 added minutes straight up, no away goal rule. Never seemed fair to me for one team to play 90 minutes with it hanging over their head, and the other team 120.

That makes a lot of sense, the rule should have been dropped during extra time.

I could see that happening especially dating someone from there. I follow Celtic FC pretty closely. I have coached soccer on and off for a few years. Celtic FC offered like an 8 month online coach mentorship program through their academy that I took a little while back, and actually went to Glasgow and attended a coaching conference which was amazing. The Scottish league is never on TV. So I watch alot of the big Premier League matchups. I loosely do keep up with Barcelona out of respect for their youth academy program.

Hearing about all your coaching experiences is so interesting. Sounds like you take it very seriously. Are you looking to coach professionally? Good luck in the next round.

Thanks. I admittedly have a pretty lush job in academia that would be hard to leave. I have taught a few coaching clinics in the past and held a few camps. My next endeavor is to get my B license so I can do some regional scouting for US soccer. I already have a C so it shouldn't be too difficult.

Is Pulisic hurt or just not getting any playing time for Chelsea ? I don't even see him listed as a possible sub, today

He got injured against Honduras in the international break. Been out the last month. Hoping he’s back after this international break. Not in the US squad this break.
