Preferred Walk-On Question

I understand the 25/85 Scholarship but this Preferred Walk-on is something new to me. Can someone explain what and how that is counted against the 25 limit you can sign and the total 85?


Can someone be a preferred Walk-on if he's committed? Say a player that's not top of the list, but commits in March, can he be asked not to send he's NLI but show up on Aug and will get you on the 85 man list?

There is no difference. He is not on scholarship. He simply does not have to go thru the process to try out in order to make the team like other walk ons He has a place on the team but no scholarship

From the information I have read, there are a few categories that a player must meet to be a preferred walk-on and not count as an initial qualifier.

The player must not have attended on an official visit, had an in-home visit, or been sent an official offer. If any of these things happen, the player has been "recruited" and will count as an initial qualifier. If not, the player will only count against the 85 in the year he gets placed on scholarship.

The way I read it, if he is not on scholarship, he is not a part of the 85 scholly limit. Players without schollies can play as long as they are on the 105 man roster, I believe.

So this answered few questions, the player can be put on scholarship and can be recruited, but not offered.

It raises more questions, like can you offer and then rescind the offer and still be preferred walk-on.

To add, NCAA rules allow for a maximum of 20 walk ons to come in with the scholarship players for pre-season practice. Those 20 are commonly referred to as "Preferred" walk ons. A school can have as many walk ons as they want, depending on budget allowances for a particular school. The 20 preferred are treated like a scholarship player at most of the bigger schools, meaning they take part in all team functions, eat at the training table, etc.

Those walkons not part of the 20 "preferred" can't participate in workouts or practice with the team until after classes have begun for the fall semester and they don't have training table privileges, or some of the other privileges that scholly players and preferred walk ons do.
