I’ve seen a crapload of polls on here, but every one includes names we have no shot in hell of getting. What’s the point of a poll if the only conclusion is we all want Patterson?

Football scoop is saying our most likely targets are Miles, Morris, Venables, Steele, and Tucker, so these are the options I’m putting out.

Personally, I take Venables. Brings an intensity and a fire that I love to see. Get him a good OC, and enjoy watching a Vols team with toughness we haven’t seen since the 90s.

And for anyone who is more of a casual follower of college football, here's some info on the candidates:

Les Miles
HC Oklahoma State 2001-2004
HC LSU 2005-2016

Shouldn't need much background, we all know who he is. 114-34 at LSU, 62-28 in the SEC, 2 SEC championships, 1 National Championship.

Pros: He's the safest pick of the five, would surely assemble a staff that would have recognizable names from top to bottom. Recruited lights out at LSU.

Cons: Lot's of noise saying the game passed him by, or that he failed to maximize his talent. Would need to get a legit OC and QB coach, and stay away from that side of the ball.

Brent Venables
DC Oklahoma 1999-2011
DC Clemson 2012-Present

Intense, passionate on the sidelines, and a great track record at both of his stops. Part of National Championships at both Oklahoma and Clemson.

Pros: He knows defense. Even on a fast-paced spread offense teams (killer for so many defenses), his defenses at Oklahoma and Clemson have consistently been among the elite.

Cons: No experience as a head coach is the only downside I can see. Major question is, does he want to be a head coach? The fact that it appears he will interview is a very good sign.

Chad Morris
OC Clemson 2011-2014
HC SMU 2015-Present

Legit offensive mind, in the midst of an impressive turnaround at SMU. For those who want to say "Look what June Jones did there, Morris sucks..." consider the following. Jones did his work while SMU was in the CUSA. The year they moved to the AAC he had them 5-7, and the following year they were outscored 88-6 before he resigned. That program was a total dumpster fire when Morris showed up, and has improved the win every year since.

Pros: Brilliant offensive mind. Puts up a ton of points with absolute nobodies at SMU. Yes, there isn't much defense out in the AAC, but his body of work with Watson at Clemson is impressive too.

Cons: Defense. Defense. Defense. We need defense to win in this conference, and SMU's has been utter garbage. It is possible to have a fast-paced offense and an elite defense (see Clemson while he was OC), but he'll need to bring an elite DC with him.

Kevin Steele
HC Baylor 1999-2002
DC Alabama 2007-2008
DC Clemson 2009-2011
DC LSU 2015
DC Auburn 2016-Present

Defensive coach that has been around absolutely forever, with one stint as a head coach (ick...)

Pros: Solid recruiter, and knows the SEC. He's coached at Tennessee, Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Clemson, and Florida State.

Cons: 9-36 at Baylor, including 1-31 in conference. Granted it was 15 years ago, but that's an ugly performance. Also, many reports of nervous breakdowns on gameday, including calling plays from the Carolina Panthers playbook the day Clemson gave up 70 points to West Virginia.

Mel Tucker
DC Ohio State 2004
DB Cleveland (NFL) 2005-2007
DC Cleveland (NFL) 2008
DC/AHC Jacksonville (NFL) 2009-2012
DC Chicago (NFL) 2013-2014
AHC/DB Alabama 2015
DC Georgia 2016-Present

The most interesting name in this list, I believe. Extensive college and NFL experience. His defenses have a reputation for swarming to the ball and creating havoc.

Pros: Extensive experience on the defensive side on the ball. NFL experience would be a good sell in recruiting, and SEC experience is a benefit as well.

Cons: No experience as a head coach, yet he has served as an AHC for Jacksonville and Alabama, with an internim stint at the former.

Miles, Venables
Tucker
Steele
Morris

That would be my order. Happy with each outside of Morris.

Football scoop again. They are wrong so often. I will assume that they are in this case also.

I wish. No way he leaves Clemson for another DCjob though.

Ironically he's turned down many head coaching opportunities to stay as DC in his career. He's been a defensive coordination for something like 18 years for a reason. Granted he wasn't a full DC for Oklahoma before 2004, but still a long time in that position and by his choice, as he had offers to move up.

He usually doesn't even respond to HC offers though. There have been a couple reports that he'll be interviewing with Fulmer, and that's gotta be a good sign.

Jokers who leave Lane Kiffin out know who would win any poll. Those who don't want Nick Saban's and Kirby Smart's KRYPTONITE are crazy. His Tennessee offense would rip both ot them apart. He spent 3 years watching them and can think like them to win the chess match easily. Want victories over Bama and Georgia every year? There is one answer!

Did I say I didn’t want Kiffin? If you’re honest with yourself, you know he’s not coming, so I’m going to stick with candidates that I think might actually be here next year.

Now go back to the Gruden thread and wish for other candidates that’ll never be our HC.
