Predict how good UT's defense will be

Every team we play is going to do their best to pound it down our throats. They will line up and run between the tackles all day long. Outside of Dan Williams, we really just don't have much on the d-line. I am very concerned about this area of our team. If we can't stop the run consistently, we will be in deep trouble.

They say Hughes has really stepped up. I think if he just plays adequate this year will be good up front. I think Walker, Martin, and Williams will take care of the rest.

Very solid. Our D will take pressure off the O this year by scoring more touchdowns. Its a hallmark of Monte's D. Score the points on the takeaway and don't give the offense a chance to fu$k up a good thing.

Solid in the secondary, questionable at linebacker, solid but thin in the middle of the line. Overall should be good enough to beat most teams, but lack of depth in the middle may hurt late in the year.

I'll say this, the defense hasn't been the problem for you the last several years. It was an anemic offense that tired your D out. Tenn will always have a solid D, they need help from the O that will keep them off the field by converting those 3rd and short to medium downs. The numbers may improve based solely on the idea that the offense has some semblance of a college offense.

I think we real be a faster D this year compared to last year, especially off the edge.

You have to play Ohio State's schedule to get the #1 defense ranking. That just ain't happening in the SEC.

UF and UT will have the two best secondaries in the nation and are too close to call who is better, imo. UT is as deep or deeper than Florida if you include the recent recruiting class.

Guys, I see no reason why we can't have the number one defense in the nation next season as long as Orgeron gets the d-line to play. I think Montario Hughes will shock many people on the line this season. That kid is a five star prospect in my eyes.

We will have the deepest and most shut down secondary by far in the nation, especially with the additions of Jackson and Myles. Morely seems to be out of the dog house. Our linebacker talent is way underrated. Will be interesting to see how fast Askew will contribute.

If we get good d-line play, then this will be the best D in the country hands down. Now we just need a productive running game to return to UT football.

let's not get ahead of ourselves

If another saftey picks enough of it up could the idea of EB playing MLB be worthy of discussion?

We can be as good. I really think Chavis' prevent style defense actually held the talent that we had back a good bit last year. We had great take away corners that were essentially placed out of action to prevent bombs most of the time when they were on the field yet Berry still posted monster numbers. I don't think people on here realize just how much better Monte and Orgeron will make this defense than Chavis and his staff. This D will be better IMO than last year despite some major losses.

Also, despite a less talented line, I believe we will get more of a consistent pass rush. You know an Orgeron coached defensive line will get some consistent pressure. Considering Ayers' talent, why wasn't he more of a force last year?

Fla's D will be great, but we can be as good. Like others have said, the question mark will be our interior line play and how quick our young linebackers pick things up.

Either way, at leadst our offense should be improved enough to actually keep them off the field a little.
put down the kook aid.

we're moving ends to tackle to fill depth. even if we had the best linebackers in the country, w/out solid dt's teams that run down hill with big o lines will average 4 ypc against us.

Justin hit it on the head. power run teams will find sucees in the heart of our defense. teams that go to the outside and try to throw on us will struggle more.

i do think the pass rush will be better, but our run d likely won't be as good.

as for chavis, you're talking about the only consistently good part of this team over the past 4 years, and he had a top 10 D last year despite having an offense that could even kick a FG given field position inside the opponents 50.

in the end, i think our D will be good. scary good on the outsde and in the secondary. but i do worry about stopping the run consistently.

People don't realize who good Chavis was. He was a damn good coach and the only thing worth cheering for last year was our D.

That said I am really eager to see how good we are with Monte and Co. at the helm. I am not sure how much was can improve from 3rd best in the country. Some smart a-- is going to say, "Well we can be 1 or 2."

Our D was good but it wasn't a dominant unit. I think some of you will agree. We played okay but we were dominated by Georgia. Florida looked to be in cruise control. And Chavis still didn't really call great plays on 3rd down. He seems to let the O know that he's going to blitz. And where he's going to blitz from.

Chavis was a good coach but he single handedly cost us that UCLA game and others throughout the past as well. Chow and a backup QB owned him after making adjustments during half-time, despite us having one of the most talented secondaries in the nation to work with. How many times have we seen UT blow leads with the prevent defense? Way too many.

When you look at the defensive talent UT brings in on a consistent basis, one could make the argument Chavis was slightly overrated. You saw our defense in 2007 when it was young and the team's primary weakness. Throughout his career, Chavis has benefited from stacked defenses talent wise. 2007 was a notable exception. Like I said, many of you will be shocked at what Monte and Orgeron do with our defense. Monte and his staff are LIGHT YEARS ahead of Chavis.
