Prayers for Pat Summitt

Nearly Speechless

When you look up VFL, there sits her picture and from everything I have heard she is a better person then she is a coach.

That makes her one hell of a person.

Pat Summit is Tennessee, and I have no doubt in the coming years she will motivate us more then ever before.

The thing about Pat is, regardless how bad things got with football or basketball, there was always Pat Summit and the Lady Vols.

Class act.

This is really hard to hear, but my prayers are with her every minute of the day. My grandmother has this disease she has good and bad days.

Very sad news to hear. Pat Summit has always been a great ambassador for college athletics, not just womens basketball.

As a diehard Dawg fan, I always have had tons of respect for Pat. I wish her nothing but the best and offer my prayers to her and her family.

Thats the next statue UT needs to commission. She has been a true Vol! and a hell of a coach. godbless u pat

This is an excellent idea. A petition should be circulated to get this to happen while she can still appreciate it.

What a shock!! Thoughts and prayers for Coach Summit and her family. I think I heard Ronald Reagan's daughter say he had early stages at the end of his Presidency and lived for many years after. I have know people that die within 2 years of being diagnosed and have an aunt that has been living with it for years..:cray:

This does belong in this forum along with every forum because of the support she has shown for every sport, and the reputation she has brought this university. She has been diagnosed with dementia, and she hopes to still be able to coach this year.

What a great lady and Volunteer. We will all pray for her at my home

I hate to hear that about Pat. What a gracious lady. My mother had dementia before she passed away a couple of years ago and it is really tragic. My mother said that is was like her mind was in a fog.

I will be prying for Pat.

Sad, sad, sad news. I don't care if you are a fan of women's basketball or not, but there is no denying that Pat Summitt has done as much and probably more for student athletes at TN than anyone in UT history, this woman and coach absolutely cares and cared for the well being of every player she coached on and off the court, diplomas and general well being means as much as winning championships with her, she's not just a great basketball coach but a great person and ambassador for UT.

Best wishes Pat.

o noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.I wanted her to coach for more and more yrs :(,and that id get to meet her.All my good thoughts go out to her family

Prayers and thoughts to the Summit Family.

I have always wanted her to win one more NC and beat Geno one more time, then go out her way on her schedule.

Now I just want this legend to enjoy life.

I was six'ish when I first saw Pat on the floor, back in the days when she and her staff put out chairs for the fans. I am simply rocked by this news.

Sad day for the Vol Nation.

Absolutely one of the best basketball coaches male or female ever, in my 50 years of observations...if I had to bet on Coach Pat or dementia, dementia better watch out cause she will take hers and beat you with yours and takes yours and beat hers with yours.

Best wishes to her and her family. Go Vols Go PAT!

I agree , great idea.

There is really nothing I can say that hasn't been said already. It's terrible news. Prayers for the entire Summitt family.

So long as she retains the cognitive ability to consciously fight the progression of symptoms, I have no doubt that Pat will be the ideal patient. With her financial resources, she will also receive the very best treatment modalities available. Unfortunately, this is not a disease that can be conquered, given our present medical knowledge. My mother is currently in the terminal stages of dementia/Alzheimer’s and I can assure you that, although memory, particularly short-term memory, becomes increasingly impaired, the radical personality transformations associated with the disease are a much clearer indicator that something is definitely going wrong. To illustrate this point, a nurse once told us about a patient who had formerly been a nun. When dementia/Alzheimer’s had become sufficiently advanced, she was cursing like the proverbial sailor.

Sadly and ironically, medical technology has become a double-edged sword in the treatment of chronic, degenerative diseases. Fifty years ago, death typically overtook us rather quickly whereas today patients will suffer for years before such conditions inflict their lethality. One reason that dementia is used interchangeably with Alzheimer’s is the fact that Alzheimer’s can not be diagnosed definitively on a living person. Beta amyloid plaque, the telltale signature of Alzheimer’s, can be recognized only during postmortem examination of the brain.
