Praise J. Jennings

You are clearly completely missing the point. Carry on your laughing and keep complaining when they don't win because guys do whatever they feel like on the field. If players weren't conditioned to do their jobs on this play, I am sure it was happening on many other plays as well.

In this instance, I would hope that the coaches told him great job for making that catch and winning the game, but you need to do your job next time which wasn't to be the one jumping up to make the catch.

“Don’t make the catch”? That would have definitely shot to the top of Butch quotes.

Correct. Cause he and his career 55% completion rate ain’t erratic like JG was down there in Louisiana in shorts and a T-shirt
agreed 55% is not that good when its mostly screens, shots to the flat and dump offs to the tight end. You'd expect at least 60% in that situation for a decent QB. I see your blue font or at least I hope thats what that was.

Here are some photos of the last second pass. Josh Smith had his back to the play. Croom was covered by 3-4 defenders before the pass and there were a total of 6 defenders.

If it was just Croom and Smith it would have been either 5 on 2 or 6 on 2.

Jennings seems to make an instinctive decision based on the number of defenders in the endzone and went up for the ball.

Croom was nowhere near that ball due to the amount of defenders body checking him from it.

My assumption is that the play was drawn up the way it was to get the defense to focus on Jennings in the back of the end zone and the ball goes to Croom towards the front. Had Jennings been in the back of the end zone where it seems like the play is designed, maybe the defenders go there too expecting it to go to him. I don't think you can say one way or the other how it would have looked had he been where he was supposed to. No one will ever know, thankfully it worked out which is ultimately all that matters in that one play.

Winners are going to do whatever it takes to win. He probably realized it was going to be short and adjusted like WR's are trained to do. He made an incredible catch and I believe that Croom was no where near the ball or to far behind. Winners want the ball in their hands when the game is on the line and we had to winners Josh Dobbs and JJ on that play. Butch's play calling is suspect anyways.

Ask Arkansas this morning if they wish anyone would’ve caught that pop up last night. Who cares who it should’ve been but somebody just go get it.

Winners make winning plays when it matters. JJ is a winner on the football field but does need to prove he can be off of it as well. Seems to being doing that. I am pulling for him because he is a Vol.

Yep. JJ prob said 'you put your back to the ball, JS -- I'm keeping my eyes on the ball and there wont' be any bobble' --

here's another good example of eyes on the ball

1. I am laughing
2. I am not complaining.
3. It was a HAIL FRICKIN MARY PLAY.

I hate to play devil's advocate here, but maybe part of the reason the team didn't win more was because of plays where guys weren't doing their jobs. While I am VERY happy that this play happened, as a coach, it's hard for me not to see that he didn't do his job and decided to put himself above the team.

Plenty to gripe about Jones and his teams but picking the fly s..t out of the pepper on a Hail Mary isn't one of them. The ball goes up and whoever can catch it needs to make the play....which Jennings did!

It's hard to talk football with people that don't understand x's and o's :thud: Apparently you completely missed the part about how even though it was a hail mary, there was a play designed for it. Every single play is designed in a specific way with a lot of moving parts that have roles. Sometimes you have to change things on the fly, absolutely, but everything is designed a specific way. Hence the reason why the Patriots have written on their wall "Do your job". It's a huge part of winning programs.

Ok so then Smith still would have had his back to the ball and there would have been 6 defenders in front of Jennings and Croom with the ball thrown short.... With them getting boxed out by the 6 on 2....

Jennings instinctively went under the defenders and only had to completely out jump one defender. The others were too far back to mess with the catch except as Jennings was coming down with the ball.

I understand that, but while it was a Hail Mary, they still had a play designed. If it was just a free for all Hail Mary, that is what would have been called. That is all I am saying. Glad the outcome happened the way it did, but players also can't be deciding which play calls they will pay attention to and which ones they won't.

In the article, it even says that Jennings blatantly disregarded his responsibility on that play.

I'd love to hear the opinion of others that have also coached football and get their take. And coached more than just flag or something like that.

Literally any other play in football, I’d care about doing your job. But a Hail Mary is all luck. You can draw it up however you want, but it’s a 1 in a million play.

Jauan, the alpha dog that he is, probably had a thought process like this. “Ball. Get ball.” Doesn’t care what Botch wanted. It’s do or die in that scenario and fortune favors the bold.

Not sure you could find anyone not happy with JJ that day nor should we today. I assume JJ has made wrong selfish mistakes but not this time. CBJ reaction wasent one of disappointment.

I'll never forget it.

Me either.

Was at my friends house (former SC bball player) and the first thing he said after Eason flung the go ahead TD (keep in mind Tito's was present) "lotta time left man".

I disagreed.

After the catch, my response. "Still wasn't a lotta time left, but he didn't need much".

It's also hard to discuss football (or anything really) with someone who is completely black/white and no room for grey.

If true, absolutely horrible coaching decision. Even with Croom being bigger, he had horrible hand-eye coordination. For example, see the first play of 2016 Florida game after the fumbled punt by Florida, Croom should have caught that ball easily but misjudged it and it was a much shorter pass than the one vs GA.

Croom is a fine young man but hes better not having to reach up for the ball. Unfortunately that is the way God made him and hand-eye coordination is God-given just like size and superior speed. JMO

Everyone understands assignment football, and the need for it...that's kinda a given, but on the last play of a game, on a 1%'er type play, you have a plan, but you throw the football up and see who wins. Do you think the intended "hands of stone" target with 4 GA players all over him would have made the same play? If it's true "assignment football", then either intended target was out of position, or Dobbs didn't put the ball where the play was drawn up. Seems like all but one of us on VN is thankful that Jennings stepped up and made a play, regardless of whether that was the exact location he was supposed to be or not.

Coach, take a look at picture in this article, and tell me anyone for UT but Jennings had any shot of catching this ball.

At Second Glance: Georgia was the better team, until ...

Came to post the exact thing?

Remember Worley throwing that absolute 40yd dime in the corner of the EZ vs OU in 2014? Hit Croom 6'5" right "between" both hands. Of course, he couldn't actually catch it and it went right through both hands ending up under him and ultimately into the hands of the beaten defender for a miracle INT. Croom is a stud athlete, but not a very solid instinctive pass catcher. Jennings, on the other hand, acts like he'd rather die than let a ball hit the ground.

I know Jones is currently being blamed for everything around here. But, if he called that play for Jason Croom to catch a ball in traffic from 45-50yds away, then that makes me have even more questions about the guy.

Throwing to a guy like Croom who had less than 7 or 8 catches in his career to win the game totally sounds like a Butch Jones play call. Thank you JJ for stepping up.

Everytime a UGA fan reminds me of the "Hobnail boot play" I inquire further if they mean the "Dobbnail boot" play. They don't wanna really talk about it then.

Further when the ball is in the air that far for that long not a lot of trickery about where it's going to actually land. It's about the aggressive go get it man on the field who will prevail. That day and sealed in history forever it was JJ.

And we won the game. Butch pretended to faint and Volnation was one soul for one brief night. No coach designs a HAIL MARY for one receiver...that’s why ALL of them were in the end zone and ALL of them were instructed to catch the damn thing. Revisionist bisching about something that succeeded is a special kind of stupid. :thud:
