In green, non-contact jerseys doing light work: Evan Berry, Elliott Berry, Colton Jumper, Rashaan Gaulden and Brandon Johnson. Once again, Johnson ran routes with the QBs/WRs today.

The defense worked A LOT on the option today, as the prep for Georgia Tech is starting early. Cut blocks, maintaining gap control were early focuses.

During routes on air, Ethan Wolf had a bad drop, but his brother Eli had a nifty grab going low for a poor throw.

DT Alexis Johnson looks to have lost his black stripe.

With today being a light day in terms of contact several guys who have been out or severely limited this spring were doing more. Among that group were defensive backs Evan Berry, Micah Abernathy and Rashaan Gaulden. Linebacker Elliot Berry was on the field in some group settings as was Quart'e Sapp. At receiver Brandon Johnson continues to do more and Josh Smith was hanging around with the position group as well.
Rob Lewis

For the Vol defense it was what we mentioned in the war room and in Monday's 3-2-1, it was all about getting a jump start on their season opening opponent in Georgia Tech. That meant on Tuesday that it was a bunch of option work particularly for the secondary.

Remember Charlton Warren has plenty of experience in seeing the option as a former Air Force player and coach. He was also 2-0 against the Yellowjackets when he was on staff at North Carolina.

Interestingly, Rashaan Gaulden was watching with the cornerbacks today, but don't look for a position switch there, it appear he was watch as a nickelback.
Hubbs

Kahlil McKenzie, after being extremely limited earlier in camp as he comes off a pec injury that occurred during the 2016 season, is back on the field and going through drills pretty full speed. With several other upperclassmen out this spring, McKenzie appears to be taking on a leadership role – going first in most of the drills and helping coach up some of the younger defensive linemen as well.

Deandre Johnson and Ja’Quain Blakely – a converted linebacker – are going to be a couple interesting wild cards for this group. Both have decent size and move well through drills, so it will be interesting to see if either, or both, get opportunities on the field this fall or if they’re still a year or two away.

Drops continue to plague the receivers and tight ends a bit. Ethan Wolf and Latrell Williams were among the players who put the ball on the ground at least once during the drill.
Daniel Lewis

A pair of defensive backs — senior safety Todd Kelly Jr. and versatile junior Rashaan Gaulden — were back for practice in at least some capacity, which in Gaulden’s case meant a spring camp debut.

SPEAKING OF GAULDEN: It’s certainly worth noting that Gaulden went with the cornerbacks and not the safeties when the defensive backs split up for early-practice drills.

It’s also worth noting that nickels weren’t put in a separate group for those drills, but if the Vols indeed spend more time in a 4-3-base defense and not use a 4-2-5 nickel as their primary base defense, it’s worth noting that Gaulden — who can play any position on the back end of the defense — might be in play at cornerback, as well.

ONE IS THE LONELIEST NUMBER: Tennessee operated during the open-viewing portion of Tuesday’s practice with only one scholarship running back, and it was Carlin Fils-aime. The rising sophomore dealt with an injury of his own and missed a couple of practices early in the spring, but now he was the one leading the line with a handful of walk-ons at the position as Robert Gillespie put them through positional drills.

Rucker

A few other things from the portions of practice open to the media:

Defensive coordinator Brady Hoke demonstrated a punching drill on a bag after Alexis Johnson didn’t do it exactly like Hoke wanted.

Jones was back on the microphone to alert players to explain certain drills to the team.

The quarterbacks performed the usual footwork and throwing drills during the early portion of practice.

Dr. Jerry Punch attended practice. Punch is scheduled to work the spring game for the SEC Network with Clay Matvick and Clint Stoerner.

Among the players wearing green non-contact jerseys were: defensive back Rashaan Gaulden, linebacker Quart’e Sapp, wide receiver Brandon Johnson and Evan Berry.

"Rain forced the Vols to conduct their 13th practice on Tuesday inside the Anderson Training Facility. The Vols have one more practice on Thursday before the Orange and White Game on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET in Neyland Stadium.

UT’s Tuesday practice was about 40 minutes shorter than usual. The Vols were expected to finish at 5:05 p.m. with coach Butch Jones, offensive coordinator Larry Scott, offensive lineman Jashon Robertson and defensive lineman Darrell Taylor scheduled to meet with the media in the aftermath.

"During individual periods, both the defensive line and defensive backs were working on fighting off cut blocks. Under the watchful eye of Brady Hoke, the linemen were shuffling side to side and giving two-hand shoves to pads laying on the ground and kept in place by a manager. The cornerbacks used their own teammates instead of pads as Charlton Warren barked out instruction.

Tennessee’s season opener against Georgia Tech is still months away, but it’s not too early to get a little bit of a head start in working on defending the unique triple-option offense the Yellow Jackets will throw at the Vols in Atlanta." -247

Glad we're already putting emphasis on this.

We've seen a lot of work on defending cut blocks. I was watching the GT game against UK and they were going after knees on almost every offensive play. I saw one block that was exactly the same as the one that broke Tuttle's leg against UGA. Cheap, cheap.

After the fit App State gave us I would think we would spend a great amount of time scheming and planning for it.
