"Jauan "the Dawg" Jennings showing no mercy to a poor student helper at practice... #Vols https://twitter.com/emprosports/status/851901677200433153/video/1"

energy was a bit lower than usual.

Also, more vets were MIA on Tuesday, as Tennessee has opted to shut some guys down the rest of spring.

Couple skills guys were back at practice, with Carlin Fils-Aime returning to work with the tailbacks while Jeff George was back with the receivers.

Todd Kelly Jr. participated in walk through work Tuesday, but his right ankle was heavily tapped and he didn't do any physical drills. Justin Martin continues to garner praise at corner.

Walt Wells (checkout the video) was really giving it to the OL today. He wasn't happy with several guys reps, calling out Drew Richmond a couple of times.

Quarterback thoughts: There’s very little to report on the quarterback front from the open portion of practice. The signal callers worked on taking snaps and steps with quarterbacks coach Mike Canales, who put them through various drills to work on their reaction time.

I spent some time watching John Kelly work on catching passes, and that’s really an overlooked area of his game. He’s about as fluid as some of the wide receivers in those drills.

We’re not allowed to report on specific injuries, but there’s a noticeable thinning of the herd at practice that’s occurred over the past few weeks. Quarterback and running backs are really two of the only positions that seem to have most of the key players going full speed at every practice.

Running back Carlin Fils-aime was back at practice after missing some time over the past week, giving Tennessee a second scholarship player at the position. For a few practices John Kelly was the only one. Speaking of Kelly, he again put all the running backs through his own drill -- this time a pass pro exercise -- while position coach Robert Gillespie was elsewhere during a special teams period.

There’s no doubt watching sophomore safety Nigel Warrior fly around the field that he’s much more confident and able to play faster than he ever did on a consistent basis last season.

There’s also no doubt that the son of former Vols and NFL star Dale Carter is getting all the reps he want in spring camp, especially Tuesday. He was the only scholarship safety going through the practice periods open to reporters.

It was tough to tell this for sure, but it looked like five-star January enrollee Trey Smith might have taken some reps at guard during Tuesday’s practice. Smith has proved to be every bit as mature-beyond-his-years as everyone hoped, and perhaps him (seemingly) being able to cross-train a little bit is another sign of that maturity. It also could be seen as good business, because coaches want to put their best five offensive linemen on the field and would be wise to look at any and every way imaginable to make that happen.

Meanwhile, at ole miss...

Hugh Freeze is stealing Coach Jones's spring workout and leadership training from last year to a T. The log carrying, the treading water exercises, the leadership training...all of it.
