Practice notes

I love that Tyler said about a bowl game, "We didn't deserve it after the way we played against Kentucky."

I hope these boys come out on fire. One thing that's good about playing NC State from the get-go, we will know IMMEDIATELY what we have. There's no UT-Martins or WKU's to get us hyped for a team that will never truly be what we think. I am excited to watch us play a pretty big dog, and see what we really have at 100%. Prayers and hopes that nobody gets hurt this spring/summer or fall.

Ready for Mount McCullers to come in too!

Jay Graham starting off right!

WILD THING
Seemingly out of desperation, the Vols slapped together a Wildcat package for Marlin Lane last fall.
It appears they're getting started on it right away this season.
UT got some production out of the single-wing look despite limited work with it in practice, and Derek Dooley has always indicated that he's in favor of using it as a change-of-pace option offensively. But some reps on the side during the open viewing period with Lane practicing taking snaps and faking handoffs suggests Dooley is committed to having it as part of the arsenal moving forward.
Lane also has his duties as a running back to worry about, and the battle for carries officially launched with new position coach Jay Graham leading some spirited drills with the media bunched around his station -- with a close view of the 10 up-downs every rusher has to do if one player puts the ball on the ground.

Seems like pretty good start!

Anybody see or hear anything about kicking game/special teams?? Kinda need alot of improvement there.

our defence has a chance to be significantly better - return the whole secondary - sentimore, couch, mt mcullers on the DL - the two freshman LB's progressing - exciting stuff

That might all be offset by learning a new system. Hopefully not though.

From what I've read Dooley said today's practice was sloppy....so does that mean the practice wasn't that good but he's still impressed by most of the players effort? I'm confused.

Not trying to be negative by any means just trying to get some clarification.

He specifically said that he was impressed with their efforts.

Thanks man greatly appreciated.

So should we be proud of today's practice or what?

Does anyone know how this practice was in comparison to the first spring practice of last year?

De nada amigo... :good!:

My take is that we should bring positives out of the reports.

Dooley had already (more than) hinted that today was expected to be sloppy due to it being first practice of the spring, and that they were installing a LOT of new stuff today.

Between Dooley's interview and the player videos I've seen, I'm excited to sit back and watch what develops.

@Vols_Beat: Dooley called first day "sloppy." But "the key is how we learn from it and don’t go out there the next day and make the same mistakes."

Derek Dooley: As expected, UT Vols 'sloppy' to start spring
I believe you have to have an account to read it but not sure

Immediately after in the interview:

It's not so important what you look like the first day, but to watch it in the film room and how you grow afterward."
[/paraphrase]

(Just supporting your quote. :)

We're all on the edge of our seat now that we have something close to real football to discuss, lol...
