Practice 18 Updates 8.22

I'm confused about the OL. I thought, based on the practice reports, etc., that the lineup was going to be: LT: Kerbyson, LG: Robertson or Kendrick, C: Crowder, RG: Kendrick or Jones, and RT: Kendrick or Thomas. I know the Jackson injury caused issues but I was pretty sure Kendrick was going to start somewhere. Am I wrong?

I think everything you said reflects all that we think we know right now, except that Kendrick isn't a lock. He, Jones, and Thomas seem to be competing for the #4 and #5 starting spots. Two of the three are in. More money right now on Jones and Thomas, probably, but we'll know when we know (later today? maybe tomorrow?)

Kendrick will either start or be the first sub at guard.
Hall apparently is going to be the first tackle sub, unless Kendrick fills that role. Those are the top seven IMHO.
Battle is for spots 8-10 and that is being waged among Mosley, Richmond, Edwards, Boulware and perhaps Blair.
Weisman is in that mix if he stays.

Yeah, that exactly. With Wiesman definitely in the mix. Probably Blair, too, because I think the coaching staff haven't quite (barely not) completely given up on him yet.

. . .

I think/hope Kendrick and Jones could win the starting guard spots to allow Robertson to take center. To me, Kerbyson is the only lock at a position, and Robertson is a lock to start somewhere on the line as the best returning lineman.

No where near ready to take center. He actually should get a few snaps at Guard before the season starts. Don't you think?

No. We've seemingly got 4 guys battling for 3 interior starting spots. The best 3 should win the job. Crowder could easily be the odd man out. He's serviceable at center, but Robertson would easily be better. This of course if Kendrick and Jones are ready to go.

Yeah, that's an intriguing question, Kristy. That's exactly what the coaches wanted to do with Robertson before Jackson's injury, according to Chris Low. It would make sense for them to still want to go that direction, if Jack Jones and Brett Kendrick pass Mack Crowder to get into the first 5.

I guess we'll find out soon, maybe this afternoon or tomorrow.

You're quoting Chris Low's statement as your fact? Where is the link or info from Chris Low?

Based on what?

You just gotta keep up, 10735. It's in one of these threads around here about the OLine. Was an interview on 104.5 The Zone about a week ago.

Umm, not sure what the heck you are asking. Here, let me type slower, so you can understand better:

About a week ago, while on 104.5 The Zone (radio) in Nashville, Chris Low related from his conversations with Butch & Co that the staff's intent prior to the Jackson injury was to try Robertson at center. Jackson's injury put the brakes on that plan.

So that's the only "fact" involved here, is that Chris Low said it on the radio. But I trust Low's skill and integrity as a reporter, so I believe that he really got that from Butch's coaching crew, and that it accurately reflects their intent...before Jackson was lost for the season.

More clear for you?

Complete conjecture on my part, but I wonder if the reason Kendrick isn't slated as a starter has anything to do with the positions he can play. Hasn't he played every position except Center?

Sounds like a pretty damn good 6th lineman to have in case of injury. Coaches are teaching multiple positions to the linemen for back-up purposes, but he may be the only one that can pretty much fill in anywhere.

Just a thought...probably wrong...but a thought none the less.

Utility infielder?

Could be. Then again, you can start your utility infielder and still shift him around when needed.

I think they'll put what they believe is the best 5 on the field.

So JP you start the rumor, then spread the rumor, then refer back to the thread as if it was someone else's material? Gotcha.

Oh, I see, you're not questioning Chris Low's integrity, you're questioning mine.

Well, you don't know me yet.

But yep, it's a fact, actually happened, Chris Low said those very words. You are more than welcome to call up the station in Nashville for verification, they probably keep pod casts of all their shows, you can get the date/time right off that other thread, it happened 10-15 minutes before I first mentioned it. Help yourself.

This was in a Chris Low article also.. I remember reading something on this myself..

You said CENTER.

You do like to argue. . .

Okay, I'll play. Crowder got ran over against stronger tackles last year. Robertson didn't. Robertson worked mostly at center in the spring. He had the schemes down, but was still learning the timing. Either way, he's stronger, more consistent, and more of an alpha than Crowder. Need anything else?

BTW, I'm relatively new here, and it didn't take me long to realize that JP is one of the best and most reliable posters on VN. FWIW

There is a big difference between a "reliable poster" and a coach. Although you are good at sharing your opinion, there is no basis in your statement. How do you know "he had the schemes down." For sure he didn't "work mostly at center in the spring," so although you have an opinion you do not have facts.

I heard this as well and both him and Jon Brice have said this over and over again. In fact today at 530 they were interviewing Brice and he mentioned a change at center was what the coaches wanted until Jackson got hurt.

Look, I like Crowder. He's given everything to UT and I'm sure he will do a fine job. But there has been plenty of press and radio interviews saying the coaches were looking for a change at center until Jackson went down. Point is, Crowder is the center now and I hope he blows the doors off every DL he faces.
