Power ranking the SEC's most dangerous O's

#2 Tennessee

The Tennessee Volunteers return dual-threat senior quarterback Joshua Dobbs, 1,000-yard junior running back Jalen Hurd, electric all-purpose junior runner Alvin Kamara and four offensive linemen with experience.

The one missing piece is a consistent downfield threat in the passing game, which is as much of a Dobbs problem as it is a wide receiver problem—if not more.

Juniors Josh Malone and Josh Smith and sophomores Jauan Jennings and Preston Williams are all talented options for Dobbs outside, but one has to become the star that the Volunteers need to take pressure off the running game and truly make this offense elite.

That is the last step. If the Vols take it, a return to national prominence will follow.

Agreed! Maybe the emergence of a offensive threat at TE will be the thing that really turns the corner fort he vol offense. It will take the pressure off everyone else!

We really do only lack a legit (not even great or spectacular) vertical passing game from being a real headache for practically any defense.

Five out seven East teams ranked 10th or worse, five out of seven let that sink in

Barring serious injury at several key positions there's absolutely no excuse for Tennessee not to be in ATL

I really hope Richmond can bolster the left tackle spot. Richmond/Hall could be best tackle tandem since Richardson/James.

Not sure about those 2 individually. But that line as a whole was terrible, especially trying to run the balll. Of course they both would of been 1st round picks had it not been for Richardson knee problems though.

Not to mention our D is going to be one of the best in the SEC this season. The sky is the limit this season.

Chad Kelly is going to have a hard time putting up those numbers again while he's looking
up at the sky.

Or our players reading all this and thinking they can't be beat.

Preston is pushing the WRs and Croom is on a mission to get a look in next years draft, so I expect a significant increase in passing game. In only his 2nd year as a WR, Jennings should make great strides too.

Also, if our maturing Oline does better at pass blocking (with a new OT), then our TEs will be better freed up and present yet another passing threat.

Last year our O line focused mostly on the run game the way buTch and DeBord wanted it.

This year they know run blocking so the major focus will be on pass blocking to do 3 primary things...

1...Take pressure off Dobbs so he'll have more time to set his feet and make a better throw.

2...Allow the WR's more time to run better routes and get better separation.

3...Allow the TE's to make a quick chip block and get out on their routes.

Our TE's will become a serious force in the passing game this year with the CROOMSTER added to the TE group as long as the O line can pass block well enough to allow our TE's to get out on their routes.

Stack the box and we'll pass.

Move back to try to defend our passing game and Hurd, AK and Dobbs will make them pay running.

This year it really should be pick your poison for the other teams D to try to stop.

Our Big Orange is going to really bring it this year on both sides of the ball.

Hang on folks, this is going to be a fun ride!

Building a Champion WIN by WIN...VFL...GBO!!!

Kelly better hope 5 new Oline starters works out better for them than it did for us a few years back. And they have AL game early so they better learn to gel quickly.

Barring injuries (and I know some will say that is NOT an excuse) if this team plays anywhere near their potential - this will be a special year.

Things look Very good for us and Team 120. We have a defense that will be a nightmare to face. I won't be surprised if we have over a dozen Ints and more sacks than a Kroger grocery store this upcoming season. We need depth to back up Darrin Kirkland, and getting Shi back is a must. But I'm willing to be optimistic about those things. Shoop is a defensive mastermind, and we are lucky to have him.
The one position that is concerning to me is offensive left tackle. Drew Richmond appears to be heir to Kyler's shoes so let's hope he steps up to the challenge. We also ought not forget that Dontavius Blair is back for his Senior yr, and this is his year to do it if he's gonna. Up to now, sadly, he has not impressed too many people. But still, he came to us as a highly touted (juco) offensive tackle....let's keep our fingers crossed. Otherwise our O line is sturdy, deep, and mean.....just what we need. Dobbs needs a better line than last yr. If we have that, Josh will not be hurried and can improve his passing production. With our present receiver corps and Croom moving to TE for his Senior year; our passing attack should he fearsome. We're all hoping for Team 120 to be special. I think they will be. And lastly, it looks like CBJ has learned what it means to coach to win, and not coach to not lose. With all this talent.....that should have us in good shape this fall.

This is what surprised me about them being number one. They have some good recruits coming in and the guys already on the line might turn out to be good and all, but you don't just replace 5 OL without having any growing pains. Plus their running game has been basically nonexistent since Freeze got there to begin with.

Kelly is good and all, but he can't do it all himself and he'll face some good DLs this year.

If Williams can stay healthy he is your long ball guy for certain. Just throw it up and he will go get it. One of the best athletes I've ever seen.

Based on what was shown on the field in the last half of the year, I can understand his thinking. Hopefully we can make it the entire season with the same starting QB. :good!:

We're actually higher than Vandy fwiw. But I sure hope we finally put something together and stop underachieving.

Yes, except this aint Kroger sacks -- those are the cheap, little plastic kind.

This is gonna be good ole fashioned, Trader Joe's kinda sacks -- the real, renewable paper kind of sacks. Big Sacks that we can really be proud of. Go VOLS !

I'd be careful using someone's opinion and projecting expectations on our team and other teams based on that person's opinion. While these are just preseason guesses it eliminates the idea that other teams could be better this year than expected.

Everyone expected Ohio St. to be in the playoffs, they weren't. Clemson was the 2nd best team in the country but was ranked 12th in preseason polls.

I'm not saying I don't expect this team to have a really good year but just tap those brakes and let's see how good we are and our opponents by week 5-6 to get a truer reading.

Forget the hype train. Put aside the analysts and media's numerous Top 10-25 rankings.
Going into Jones' fourth year, two Top 5 recruiting classes, two-deep depth and talent, and a talented DC ... I'm done tapping brakes

Comp between Apply and Del Rio looks good. Heard Trask's been impressive.
What’s the general consensus of fans on Del Rio, Appleby, Franks, and Trask?

Good luck but for one Sat, Sept 24

Nice username!

Good point, Volswin98. Arrogance can be unforgiven. I’m counting on the leadership of among other Dobbs, Hurd, JRM, and Sutton to keep the team confident but grounded
