During his early signing press conference, Coach Heupel used the term “Power of the T” a couple times. Maybe this is tradition and I’ve just never heard it (I’m just adopted); or, maybe CJH has started something that is significant.

The Power T is a symbol, a logo that we all respect and love. But Power of the T is

Team culture
  • A feeling of brotherhood amongst the players
  • Sweat pouring out of an athletes body in the weight room
  • The chills players and the crowd feel when POSL band opens the T
  • The rattling of teeth as the mouth piece is jarred free by a UT LB meeting you in the hole
  • That perfect route and pass that results in 6
  • The team singing with the crowd after a big conference win in Neyland Stadium
What does “Power of the T” mean to you?

I live 2,000 miles from Knoxville, but the Power of the T to me means:

1/4 of your wardrobe is orange or UT based
You have Power T accessories (keychains, car window stickers, coffee mugs, yard flags)
Everyone knows you as the 'Tennessee Guy'
Still watch every single game, no matter who they are playing, decked out in orange gear
Text your other Vol buddies multiple times throughout the week to discuss the upcoming game
Your pet names are named after former Vols
Your most visited website is Volnation
Your WiFi network at your house is named RockyTop
Your ringtone is Rocky Top
No matter what their record is, the above does not change

I'm almost 50. For as long as I remember I've been a UT fan... back to the late 70's. The term "Power T" didn't emerge until the mid-late 90's IIRC.

So for me, I don't need "The Power of the T" to define my fandom. It's in my blood. I know I'm now "old" to the younger fans but I don't need a marketing plan to let people know who my team is.

I know, I know....get off my lawn!

Yep. Sounds like me. I refer to my cell phone as Rocky Top because of the tone. I have an entire closet devoted to orange gear with a lot of recently gathered BaseVol gear. I’ve got a long story of why I wear orange socks every football game day since Tulane 1967. This includes my wedding day, an AWAY game day. The socks were not visible with the black tux until we kneeled at the altar and a ripple of giggles filled the church.

" The power of the T " phrase seems a bit corny to me, but as already pointed out , Heupel didn't start it. I think I remember hearing it from as far back as Butch , and for sure Pruitt. Never really cared much for catch phrases.

I remember a bunch of groomsmen and friends huddled around a 13" black and white watching Tennessee-Bama in 1985 at a friends wedding.
Come to think of it, I'm not sure who's wedding it was, but I remember watching the game in the church basement!

I feel like I first heard that phrase from Butch Jones when he was discussing recruiting; I want to say he's the one that started it. It sounds like the kind of thing he'd cook up, to be honest. The phrase doesn't really mean anything at all when you stop to think about it, and honestly, when you aren't winning even ten games a year just what is the "power of the T" supposed to mean, anyway? Just a wordy phrase to shop around in pitches.

The Power of the T means you still believe there’s a chance because no matter how bad the teams or past have been, they’re still only 1-2 bounces/players/coaches/plays away from turning it around and silencing the negas.

Having spent four autumns of my youth opening the T, it means a fan base so electric and excited at the same moment that no matter how hard you blow you still can't hear yourself play.
My grandson’s first year “opening the T” with the POTSL. I had no idea of the hard work and dedication required by the members. From talking with him, a true brotherhood/sisterhood which make the “Pride” special! Thanks for your hard work and dedication. GBO!

Another Power OF THE T…

Fans from different backgrounds (age, economic, sex, education, faith, region) coming together on VolNation to share, poke, cheer, chastise, debate curse (albeit with special characters) but ultimately coming together to pull for our Volunteers. Just like family.

That phrase will mean something BIG when this program makes it mean something BIG on the field.

I'll add to this. When you have two daughters still in school who both are on the swim team. The youngest, 8th grade, has a swim meet in a different location from the older one, a junior, and us parents are having to split to be with each. The youngest is closer to home, in Gainesville Georgia, the oldest is having a swim meet at the university of Georgia today. The power T means I volunteer to go with the high school, not only to support my daughter and her team, but to take advantage of the opportunity to walk around the uga campus wearing Tennessee gear!

You guys get ready to start a go find me for my bail later🤣

Typical coach speak,IMO, but the brand of UT athletics is worldwide. I think it’s the orange. It’s different and unique. It stands out compared to other oranges like Clemson, Florida, Illinois, Syracuse.

Chicken or the egg?

I’ll argue it is this type of language that is part of the culture shift to return a championship tradition to Rocky Top.

It’s more than a logo. Power of the T is a statement of action.

I agree can be considered “coach speak” especially if execution fails (aka Butch and brick by brick).

I believe Heup is going to execute and elevate “Power of the T”.

I still think there is huge difference between “Power T” and “Power of the T”.
