I dont see how everyone is so down on the run game..

Yes.. we need to Pound the rock between the tackles a bit better. But it was the first game and we had almost 200 yds of rushing.

We also averaged 5.1 a carry..

All summer everyone was all like.. "if we can just average 3.5YPC I will be happy, thats all we need to keep defenses honest".

Well we exceeded that and everyone is still complaining.

I just dont get it.

Like I said.. of course we have some work to do.. But is this not a VERY promising start?

With CP and JH, our running game doesn't have to be spectacular. We ran it well enough. I think Marlin Lane getting more carries in the coming weeks will help a lot with that, too.

Who's beeching about the running game? Marlin looked fantastic and Raijon ran better in the second half after a little coaching.

Ageed. We took what is supposed to be a good team straight to the woodshed. Lets lay off Chaney a little too. We put up 500yds, burn the so called best db in the country, run for over 200 yds and people are still complaining.

For sure. I thought the runnin game had its ups and downs. Glad Neal didn't put the ball on the ground that was nice to see. Lane ran hard. Neal needs to run up the gut and pound it. No side stepping and dancing around. Looked light years better than last year.

AverageYPC is misleading bc of CP's big run early on. We will be fine if Neal will lower his pads more and just drive forward.

I appreciate that, even though the run didn't work, we kept trying. Instead of giving up something that didn't work, we kept running so that they had to respect the play action.

Neal averaged 2 yards a carry

I agree WooleyDooley. Neal danced around and lost yards a few times hurting his YPC. Lane was much better IMO.

We just don't have an elite RB. Neal has blazing speed but lacks vision. Young is elusive but lacks size to run between tackles. Lane has good vision but lacks burst and gamebreaker speed.

That being said, should be easy to land a top notch RB this year given the opportunity to play immediately. Come on down Henry!!

Don't get me wrong but let's not forget that CPs run was a big chunk of the #s. it was great and hope it keeps being successful. But it's not part of the "run game" we are wanting at UT. Just IMO that's all. We need Neal to run it hard. He can dance around and try to be Trent Richardson once he hits the second level but needs to pound through the trenches first before he can start his tango. I started thinking about Pooles running last yr. Smh

I am happy with what I saw though and sure the coaches have more to work with this week and get them ironed out vs GA St. Florida game should be a good one that's for sure.

Neal has a natural tendancy to want to bounce outside where he used to be able to burn HS kids and take it to the house. Doesn't happen often at college level. This is Jay Graham's problem. He needs to force Neal to stay inside... but, it's not a sure thing that that will ever happen.

I think this was an excellent game with massive improvement all around, especially defensively.

The running game took a huge step forward . There are some issues that need to be worked out ( see Dooleys comments) but it was a HUGE step forward.

My two issues with the run game :

1) In the 2nd quarter with the lead , we should have switche to a pound the ball consume the clock mindset with burning the clock in mind. Why ? we could have broke their back and kept their very talented QB off the field. This coul have went from being a goo game to an absolute domination ( see Bama vs Meechicken )

2 ) I love our wie open fast pace approach . However , we will not be able to run out of gun formations , pistol included, against SEC defenses ( Bama , UGA , UF , USCjr) WE will not be able to exploit the edge with regularity against them. WE must be able to have the QB uner center and use play action ...that way the D will have to play balanced and we will be able to run in the box ...the back will be closer to the line .

I could be that issue #2 will be game planned by the coaches and they just did not feel it was needed in this game. I did not that two of their long passes came from play action out of a conventional formation

I think we're all just tired of seeing the same old stretch plays to the outside. IMO they're always hard to watch. I would be curious to know if they keep running the stretch plays to in effect set up the carries up the gut. Either way, this game was a nice step in the right direction.

We are not going to have a traditional power run game in this offensive scheme. Add to it that we do not have a big blocking tight end to seal off linebackers hurts. I like the idea of using Bullard at the tight end position because he gives us another bruiser, but we lose the pass receiving potential in the mix. Opposing teams know what we are doing.

After what we saw the other night, Lane should get a look at starter. One thing though, leave the back in long enough to get in rhythm. Swapping guys out every other play does not help at all.
Not sure if D. Young will be able to help us back there or not.

Take away CP's runs and the RB's avg drops to 3.3ypc. RN's avg was 2.4. ML looked ready to play but RN not so much. Nothing like being demoted to add some fire.

But I have faith that CJG will fix our directional challenged RBs.

Look the only problem with our run game is the backs need to trust the hole is there and hit it. I'd rather have no gain or 1 yard gain then losing yards when they bounce it out. I also would like to see how we look with Big Ben lead blocking and two tight end sets. Everything I saw Friday night was single back and pistol and it was very slow developing. Maybe they are holding power game for fla so they don't have tape on it to prepare.
