Brandon Lopez in 2012-13 from Basketball Time in Tennessee. He earned his first letter as a Vol after averaging 5.8 minutes of playing time in 17 games. Brandon scored 5 points to go with 11 rebounds, 8 assists and 3 steals, he he averaged 6.1 minutes on the court in 8 SEC appearances. Lopez scored his first career SEC points when he drove to the basket to lay in a finger roll in the win over #8 Florida, and he was called to action when Trae Golden went out due to injury against Vanderbilit on 1/29/13 and responded with a career high 3 assists and 2 rebounds to help lead the Vols to victory. Coach Martin had this to say about Lopez, "He has every right to get minutes like everyone else. He knows he fights for those minutes. I went back and watched last season's games. Watching him play, he came in during some big games and helped give us a boost. He came in and gave us major minutes." And you say he is not worth a scholarship! Shows exactly how much you really know! Here is a guy who has busted his butt for 3 years helping this Tennessee basketball team, and you say give the scholarship to some dude who has probably never set foot on campus!!!

This is why I was concerned with not having a recommit from Cofer tonight. With it being slow played and having other guys visit, if someone like Owens or McGhee wanted to commit and Underwood is announced and releases some guys from USM then those 6 schollies will dwindle quickly. I don't know if we really take more than 3 long post players. Someone's getting left out and we could see it as soon as this weekend.
So in your wisdom, someone that has 5 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, 8 assists and 10 turnovers in three years deserves a scholarship? Not saying he hasn't contributed to the team he has but he has been rewarded just by being on the team. I'm sure he's loved the experience.
Agree 100%
I assume a phone call to Phil might get made if they have guys start popping, but then again maybe not. Owens and Cofer are pretty similar players, in this spot if you're Tyndall you take whichever guy wants to be a Vol first IMO.
Absolutely. I was a CCM guy (and still have great admiration for the man), but it was tough to have all your eggs in one basket, slow play other recruits and then be left with nothing. Not getting Looney and seeing a decent player like London walk was tough. Working hard on Austin and slow playing JW3 was tough and we were left wanting. At this point in the game, you take the commits of guys on your target list regardless if they were your 2 or 3rd choice.
I AM SAYING THEY SHOULD BE GIVEN SCHOLARSHIPS 12 AND 13. One of those will be available next year for an incoming freshman and the other the year after. The big commits can fill 8-11. Don't fill the roster with people who have never been on campus while kicking two VFLs out the door. That is pure BS about being on the team being reward enough for two and three years of infantry grunt work! Understand now?So to be clear, you're suggesting we place Lopez and Campbell on scholarship?

I totally disagree....if two scholarships happen to be open them award it to them for yr only....scholarships are for recruited players.

This. The only way they get a scholarship is if they have one available for this upcoming year. But, I get the feeling that Tyndall will have alot to choose from and will fill up scholarships.
In 2013-14 Brandon Lopez and Galen Campbell were the only two non-scholarship players on the roster. Since they were good enough to be on the roster, let's say #14 and #15, and one has two years experience and the other three years experience playing for the Vols, it does not make sense for me that they cannot move to #12 and #13 for one year. If they are that bad, they should never have been placed on the travel roster in the first place. And their resume does not say they are bad players. They are certainly better than most players coming out of high school that are not 4 or 5 stars by now.
Just a 65 year old taking a 24 year old who thinks he knows it all to school! That's all!I would suggest you letting this go. I believe every team can have two walk-on spots on their roster. These two players fill those spots. At this point, unless there are scholarships open that will not be filled, then they can get them. Otherwise, this isn't even up for debate, and it doesn't make sense to continue the discussion.

Like I've said, if you've got an open scholarship or two, absolutely give those to the walkons. However, if you've got a chance to add high major recruits to your team, this is not even a discussion.
