It depends on what you define as shutdown. If we have a mask mandate/social distancing, restaurants and stores can remain open perfectly fine.

Schools with reduced capacity even.

Contact Sports? Yeah Id shut those down until then.

Risk to athletes is incredibly low. Cases are going up despite masks and social distancing. The virus is going to virus. Open up and let everything work out. This shutting down business is much more dangerous than the virus ever thought about.

I aint lettin no know good docter stick me with that magic potion. Trump says draino is all I need. I have rights and I aint takin no mind control vaccine so they can put 5G in my brain.

Oh trust me you can open a can of worms conversations about how we need preventative healthcare, universal coverage, etc.

And yes Americans have vastly worse diets than many developed nations.

The problem is even if we said that, how many people will listen? How many will say "I don't care what they say, this is America and I do what I want."

This is why we have to rely on mandates from government and corporate America.

They may not listen, and they have that right IMO. Wanna be sick? Fine. But that's not what's happening is it...they're telling the rest of us (some who have already swapped out diet and lifestyle choices for healthier ones) that *we* need to stop living our lives to protect *them.*

As they should, because not doing so doesn't just endanger one person's life. It endangers society which falls under governmental security protection.

And there is a difference in saying you need to edit your life to fit these guidelines and saying you have to stop living your life.

I’m not sure why I am surprised at how scared that people get when the media tells them they need to be scared.

It’s like people live with an inherent fear of things now. What happened?

Y’all need to go change your own oil. Or go build something. Go hunt something. Go on a tough hike or a challenging float trip. Clean a gun. Chop some wood.

Good grief. Bunch of Ps off in here.

Risk of death to athletes is low. Their contraction, spread, and possible long term implication is much different.

Cases are going up because we have no leadership. We have some people following guidelines and others sayinf screw it. Other countries with coordinated efforts are handling it very well.

"The virus is going to virus." Equivalent to saying I dont really care what it does, we can't stop it. Totally untrue.

Shutting down is not ideal but its better than losing another hundred or two hundred thousand lives needlessly.

It is acknowledged that putting people in masks will not protect them. The claim is that masks will protect others by preventing the spread from non-symptomatic people. But where is the proof for that? Where is the proof that non-symptomatic people are likely to spread it in any case?

But that's a secondary issue relative to your post.

The idea that people are going to infect each other by walking past each other outside or even in a large open store like Walmart with all of that air... is not very sound. However, no matter how much distance you put between people in a bar, restaurant, elevator, moderately occupied office, home, apartment, etc... if those places share return HVAC air the virus is going to accumulate and infect people. The virus may grow and reactivate inside the HVAC system (other viruses are known to do so).

Oddly, hospitals seem to know this and usually have positive pressure to assure a new supply of clean air from the outside is coming in.

I installed the system below to protect my guys at work. For $500... we kill the virus rather than hoping a homemade mask will protect them. One unit can purify air being cycled through a 6 ton HVAC unit.

A case study like the one they offer is EXACTLY what I would like to see for masks and the other "feel good" things being proposed... that do little to help and MAY do more health damage than they prevent.

No...there's not a soul out there who can endanger *my* immune system. It's functioning or it's compromised...that's on me.

You should have stopped with your first sentence-“Risk to athletes is low”. Everything after that is pure conjecture on your part. You may not like hearing that but it is the truth.

I like UT's odds here.

So the south is the SEC and trading FSU and Tennessee? Hell no. Also, this is geographically retarded.

The people in New York and New Jersey look at the south and say "don't those @sshats see what just happened to us?" Are they that freaking stupid? The stereotype of dumb country bumpkins is being solidly reinforced. Trust me I hear it every day.

Nobody wants to be cooped up at home. But there's people in the world with common sense and there's people who will kill other people with their ignorance and call it "their rights" LOL

Also, I build stuff for a living.

@zaqhhh While you are at it... maybe you can help.

What happens in the few moments between my inhale and exhale that makes a mask a significant barrier to the virus? The best seal occurs when I inhale. When I exhale even with a well fitted mask... I feel as much air escaping around the mask as moving through it.

What kind of strange magic occurs making that mask a barrier one way but not the other?

Evidence? Also, what about loss of smell, possible lung capacity deterioration?

Answer is we just don't know and you may want to take that risk, but your wants do not outweigh societal needs.

Is it better to keep a kid in his room for his whole life or better to have a child out in the environment daily?

Which is better for their immune system?

Some day they will die, What is the long term effects of having the flu - the same

No, they aren't in the same boat. I had a bad 14 day bout with the flu when I was 15. I had no long term effects from the flu. Catch COVID and you can end up with pulmonological, neurological and cardiac long term damage.

Functioning is not a one to one for protected. You may be fine and contract it and end up dead.

You may be fine and contract it and end up fine but spread it to others who die.

You may not listen to guidelines and be fine and never get it.

But because option 2 is there, it is part of the governments purview

I love these non-sequitor arguments.

#1 Your mask may not be a proper fit.

#2 Even if it does do that, it is still under better protection than with no mask. Both for you and the people around you.

Do you honestly think that no one in the rest of the country has stereotypes about NY and NJ??! If you’ve spent the last 4-5 months watching their state And local government and the behavior of their citizens, and you’re embarrassed by Southerners then you can kick rocks.

Is it better for me to wear a condom or have tons of unprotected sex to build up my tolerance to STDs?

I see, it is better to not answer the question.

I will answer it for you. It is better for young healthy people to be out in society. So when they are older and less healthy, their body has acquired some additional weapons to fight such dangerous things

You can't say how the virus may or may not affect you. There are plenty of examples of people with no health issues that end up hospitalized or dead. Now, you may be fine risking your own life for whatever reason, but the problem is that nobody knows how the virus will affect them. Nobody knows if they have an underlying/undetected health issue that could end up causing issues if they get the virus. So anyone you come in contact with is potentially a victim of your cavalier attitude.

In other words, it ain't about you. Get over yourself.
