There was no exemption. They used the backcount rules for EE's just like Georgia ( sign 34 back count 9 ),Alabama did ,Auburn did and UT would have if they had been successful in all top players they went after they would have signed 27 and backcounted two EE's to 2012.UT will back count two to 2012 anyway and that would bring the total to 19 for 2013 and if do not sign anyone else they can bring on 31 next year provided that they get six EE's and back count from 2014 to 2013 and they have room under the 85 scholly limit when school starts August 2014.

Incorrect. There was a 1 yr exception for them.

I want no part of this guy. He makes Dyer look like a choirboy.

Humm, i dont think thats correct. He has been a model student in Ala and would be fine at UT. Would take Crowell anyday from a character standpoint and its not even close. But would love to have one or both.

The only real place we'll need any JUCO's at on defense in 2014, is at LB.

2014 Dline-Solid!
DE-Lewis (JR) Williams(SR), Brown (Soph) Carr (Soph), Miller (Soph)
DT- Clark (SR), Carson (SR), O'brien(JR), Saulsberry(JR) *Carr and Miller should both have the size to slide inside by then, when needed.

2014 Oline- That's going to be another dominate offensive line.
OL- Antonio Richardson (SR), Marcus Jackson (SR), Marques Pair (SR), Mack Crowder (JR), Allen Posey (JR), Kyler Kerbyson (JR)

The DE and DT depth is terrifying to me. The players in those positions get injured frequently and, given their size and constant violent contact during the game, also wear down quickly. While we may add some JUCO and freshmen, the DL depth is going to be pretty scary. I also think Antonio Richardson is likely going pro and he is the only proven commodity on the OL as of yet. Not adding a few more OLs and DLs this class is going to bite us I'm afraid.

Right. After this year, my understanding is that the SEC will not permit any team to bring in more than 28 players in a single class, including early enrollees, and there are only 25 scholarships available per year but you can back count up to 3 to get to 28 if the program signed fewer than 25 in the previous year. The way I think this works is if UT signed 22 this year (2013), we would be 3 under the 25 limit and can backcount up to 3 early enrollees in the next class (2014) to bring that number to 25 and then have 25 available scholarships for that year itself for a total of 28 in the calendar year of 2014. UGA and A&M took full advantage of this one year reprieve from these rules and signed "full" classes this year. If I am right, we are at 21 signees right now and should at least add one more player because it is basically a use it or lose it scholarship.

3 weapons charges constitutes a pattern, IMO.

Would agree on this point.

Based on what I have read I would be more inclined for Dyer.

Anyone happen to have any articles or any more information on Crowell's charge's/remediation?

He got all 3 during one traffic stop. The 2 felony charges were for having a gun with an altered serial number and being armed in a school zone. Unless there is more to the story I do not know why he would not be given a second chance since neither charge was tied to an actual crime just a traffic stop.

Crowell has definitely not been an angel. And it certainly wasn't just a clerical error that got him arrested. Here's from the USA Today report:

According to Athens-Clarke police spokesperson Hilda Sorrow, Crowell was arrested at a "vehicle check-point" — or road block — on East Campus Road at Green Street at 2:20 a.m. Friday. Officer Kristin Thornton reported smelling the odor of marijuana in Crowell's 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis. Crowell gave consent to search the vehicle, himself and four other unnamed occupants. No marijuana was discovered but a 9-mm Luger handgun with an altered serial number was found under the driver's seat. Crowell was immediately arrested and taken to jail and the car was impounded.

But, that being said, if he knew the ice was thin on this opportunity--that if he blows it here, it's an immediate dismissal--surely simple self-preservation would allow for a 12 month visit to run the ball for us.

This.

Also, based on a recent USA Today article I read that I do not have a link to there was mention that the state policeman was later terminated from his position over this incident as it was not as it was initially alleged.

If he would like to be a Vol, I would sure like for him to have the opportunity.

That was because the policeman tried to cover for Dyer. The charges were actually worst that first thought.

We could use a Dt.

But even without Richardson, Jackson was a former starter. And he played a good deal last year.

Exactly and has done well since leaving GA. Would take Crowell anyday if I had to just pick one. But either would boost our RB depthand prob be the best, talent wise. Although i believe were gonna see a confident, healthy Lane. He played well the last half of the season.

Bump... Couldn't find a thread on Jarran Reed.

He signed with UF last year but never enrolled... He's back at East Miss Juco and the Vols are evaluating him.

I coached him in high school. I'll see what I can find out. He apparently didn't qualify at Florida last season.

Yeah find out what you can. VQ said he's a name to watch moving forward so he's a real possibility if they say that.

If UF was willing to take a chance on him (knowing his academic concerns) he must be pretty talented.

In HS he was about 6'3 300lbs and running a 4.9 on grass. If he gets his head right, he's got first round pick type talent.

Jarran Reed - Yahoo! Sports

"Graduated from Goldsboro, NC High School and attended Hargrave Military (Va.) in 2011. Transferred to East Miss. Community College in Jan of 2012."

Was offered by Bama. He actually even committed to Ole Miss at one point. He would end up backing off that pledge.
