Kick-offs: C+ I cannot say whether the philosophy of the coaches in the kicking game is to kick it shorter and higher to allow coverage units time to get down, but we did not get it into the endzone often. Palardy managed to get 6 touchbacks, (1 in 14 average) with at least one of those coming from a shortened field penalty. Two kick-offs went out of bounds which is inexcusable. Coverage was excellent on kick-offs with an average start on the 24 yard line for the opponent. More touchbacks would have brought that average down considerably and reduced the possibility for big returns, so great job by the coverage team.

Field Goals: D Possibly the most frustrating aspect of a frustrating season. Much hyped kicker Michael Palardy did not progress this off-season, after it was reported he played injured and was overworked last season. What happened to the kicker on those highlight videos where he kicked balls through uprights seemingly miles away? No one knows. But this version was 9-14 and a dismal 4-9 over 30 yards. 2 kicks were blocked (3 if you count the Vandy penalty and subsequent Rogers touchdown) and the height of the kicks was often too low, coming off of his foot like a wounded duck. These misses cost us at the very least, overtime against KY and We need a serviceable kicker in the worst way.

Punting: D+ 38.1 Yards per punt for Darr and 36.8 yards per punt for Palardy. :ermm: This is what the top rated Highschool kicker and punter according to recruiting services two years ago have been able to manage this year. Maybe we have been spoiled with various Colquitts pinning it in the corner on the two yard line over the years and opponents turning their heads to watch a Tennessee punt soar 15 yards over their heads, but this is sad. Not only were our punts consistently short, we had to worry about 18 yard punts squirting off the sides of our punters feet on a regular basis. Outside of the comedy of errors that Joe Adams induced during his amazing punt return for Arkansas, the coverage was very good and several punts were muffed.

Return Game: B-

Devrin Young: B We need to separate the hype from the truth. I love me some Devrin Young as much as the next guy (no homo) but let's critique his performance a bit. In 9 games, he only returned 8 punts, many times opting for the fair catch when he may have been able to generate yardage, and sometimes letting it bounce over his head when he play may have been made. His return average was a solid 11.8 yards per kick and a long of 43. Most of us held our breath every time he dropped back, but he needs to average more than one return per game, especially if he is not being kicked away from, which he was not IMO. Devrin also averaged 23.3 yards per kick return, with a long of 63. He displayed good shiftiness, but did not have that "extra" gear that separates the good from the great. We will have to see how he does next year. He also did not run many out of the endzone, especially when we could have used the potential spark it would have provided. Unless being specifically told by the coaches (which we don't know), I felt he should have taken a few more chances. His ball security was fair, but not fantastic.

Other returners: B- Contrary to popular belief, our kick-off return average was about the same with other returners as it was with Young. Lane and Rogers handled most of the duties before Young but did not have the "big" returns that Devrin did occasionally.

Blocking: C
This one is tricky to judge. Punt returners did not get many returnable punts (so they judged) so we could do a better job holding people up on the line. On kick-off's they did a solid job, but did not spring "the big one" that would put them over the top.

Giving Young a B is questionable. I think that's based on what we've had in the past, which was something like an F- - -. He still made a good bit of bone headed plays. I'd go with a C-

Gave him a B- at first... I'm treading lightly bro. It's like navigating a mine field of mattresses and matches around here bro. I can't risk a "D-Young hater bomb" going off. We. will. all. die.

He was a great spark at times, but wasn't the one year fix we were all hoping for

Good to see someone giving Devrin criticism. The future is really bright for him, but he's gotta improve in many areas.
Another excellent post, nice job man.

I would like to add that the punt/kickoff coverage has been a lot better (minus the Arkansas punt return) than in years past. The past few years it always seemed like we got gashed for large gains in that area.

This is true. Our coverage has been much better this year than in Fulmer years and Kiffin year.

lol Please....

Giving D. Young a B compared to what has happened in the past is like giving Palardy an F.

Make sense yet?

(Hes the best thing we have atm)

Much, much better. It seemed like we gave up a special team TD every game in 08 and 09. I'm sure if someone looked at the numbers, they would find a significant improvement.

It's nice to see a level headed post about Devrin Young. He's got a lot of potential but definitely needs to improve in some areas. He had some really questionable touchbacks on kickoffs that were only a yard or two deep in the end zone at times when the team needed a spark. He also needs to get better at getting under punts and catching them. Lets way too many bounce. I look forward to seeing what he can do though.

Devrin at least catches the ball. Other than that i agree he can improve in some areas

Kicking game was so frustrating to watch this year. Devrin proved he can be a weapon, though. We have a lot of guys that can return coming in.

f for special teams.

Return game is stil sh*t

How man punts are you NOT going to field. Sheeeesh

Even Russell criticisized young a couple weeks ago

That group needs a overhaul from the coach on down. More starters need to at on special teams, everyother good team does it

You all are way too generous on these grades. We won 1 game in conference and we beat 2 BCS conference teams. This entire team, staff and dept gets all F 's

D Young's problems could be largely mental. In the Alabama game he was roughed up pretty good and thereafter he was never the same and far less aggressive. I think he found out that the SEC is very, very different from high school -- the hits are much faster and harder. Basically, he was getting pounded and it hurt his confidence and possibly he became fearful of getting hurt.

I would give Young a split grade -- a B+ for his first few games this season and a C- or D+ in the later games, where he was average, at best.

On Palardy and Darr, is there any legal way we could get someone who knows kicking (obviously not Russell) to work with them over the Spring and Summer??

As for the coaches, Russell has done well with the coverage units, but not so well with the return units. Dooley probably hurt our kicking efforts with his situational platooning of the kickers. I also do not know why he did not use the walk on kid a bit more when Palardy began to constantly hit very low kicks.

not saying Young doesn't need improvement, but our blocking, especially on punt return is absolutely abysmal. Pretty much blocking anywhere on the team is garbage.

I could not agree more. We vastly underachieved this year even taking the injuries into consideration. I also agree that while the players played poorly, the coaches have to be held accountable -- in my opinion, that is especially true for Hiestand and Joseph, and ultimately for Dooley. Dooley will have to make changes in his staff (Hiestand and Joseph need to go) and he has to find a way to have a full time RB coach or we will see the same product on the field next year.

Young has been running scared since the damn Bama game. I don't know what happened but he's gunshy. He trying to out run every damn body and he isn't real fast. All this Young this and Young that is a wash. I'm about tired of all this s**t right now. We're the laughing stock of the SEC now.

Chaney needs to go too. This dumb stuff he's running is just crazy. Wildcat without handing the ball off and then down by the goaline. F--king kidding me. I've been a Dooley backer but man I don't know if I want him coaching this team. Hell he can't beat KENTUCKY. WTF

I posted this series after the KY game and it kinda got lost in the midst of the mattress burning. It's a slow day so I thought I'd bump them to see what people think now that the emotions from the loss have settled a bit. :hi:

I have no idea myself but does anyone know if the coaches had Young reigned in on a lot of his returns? He played awfully "safe" as the season wore on. That's not something you'd expect from a Fr return specialist unless being told to do so. On a couple of his TB's his body language looked a bit frustrated.

Whether it be he or the coaches (or perhaps even a little of both) I'd like to see a little more aggresiveness next year. (though I realize in the return game there can be a pretty fine line between aggressive and foolish)

Young definitely regressed as the year went on. He showed some skills early but he played scared late in the year. Our blocking on the kick and punt returns didn't help either. On the positive side, the kick and punt coverage was excellent all year. I'm not even going to talk about the kickers...
