Post Press Confrence Thoughts

Pretty impressed with the presser. I'm still on the fence, but Debord went a long way towards getting me on board

Jack Nicklaus won a lot of major golf tournaments playing conservatively. Jean van de Velde lost a really big one by not playing conservatively on the last hole with a 3 shot lead.

It usually doesn't pay to swing for the fences unless the situation demands it.

You must know I am a golfer. In fact in my day a pretty damn good one so your analogy hits home. Sitting on leads or trying too hard to protect them can have an equally devastating effect. I love Butch Jones so don't get me wrong, I just think sometimes the best of CEO's needs a contrary opinion. He keeps recruiting like he has and frankly it will be easy to get our Vols of years past back, and it will not require a super coach or coordinator.

Ok, so what?

Saban endorsed Dooley

You can't go by endorsements alone

The guy has been out of football for a reason and its not because he was waiting for the right opportunity folks

Just curious about your "out of football" assessment...when were you last "in" football?

As you know, there is a difference in being conservative and playing the odds, versus going into a shell to protect a lead.

Impressive presser. I'm happy and comfortable with the hire. The man knows the X's and O's and Butch and company brought in the Jimmies and Joes. Next year and '16 are going to be full blown exciting.

Wow, I like TheBoard! Maybe his middle name is "Chairman of". This hire rrrrrrReally has the legs to be a dark horse. Oh well, proof of the puddin coming in September! Check my stats, feel my sack!

Brilliant! Same man, two roads. Everyone thought Fulmer would hire Debord back in the day. Fulmer didnt and lost his job. NO one wanted the Butch to hire Debord this time and he did.

Frankly, Jones was giving the fans some brazen political spin when he claimed UT doesn't run a spread offense. It did that because he knows we know DeBord has never coached a spread, and so if you tell the fans that we don't run a spread offense, then they can't complain about the OC never coaching it. I call BS on BJ. The read-option is a spread offense. We will run Dobbs quite a bit because we HAVE too--he's an excellent runner, so to take him out of the offense by not running him would be the height of stupidity. He should run the ball at least 10 times a game--not 20, but not 5 either. In the end the proof will be in the pudding--we'll see how the offense plays.

Sure. Sad that He does not know as much as you.

Jones:

Don't think from day one he hid this hire from anyone.

Did not care what anyone thought about the hire.

Like waving a red flag in front of a Bull he was going to hire Debord no matter what.

He is the caretaker of UT Football and He was looking for the guy that fit his criteria.

Debord:

Passionate. Wants to be here. Knows the Job and knows how to train and coach staffs to coach player. Will be a take charge guy and will work like heck. His last hoorah. Knows the offense and knows Jones. Will succeed.

He will fix what is broke. He knows and has the experience, the resume to do so.

BJ made the hire and its all on him. The fan base will find out this year if BJ really gets it.

I hope BJ and Debord have better game plans than they do pressers. BJ says its not a spread and Debord calls it a spread. Already not on the same page.

as long as we can run the ball i dont care. throwing will be easy if we can figure out how to run. When i heard the phrase "attitude runs" i started to feel better. Thats what i grew up watching from Tennessee.

Yeah. I pretty much qualify as one of those that do not know. I love the game but have a lot to learn. The more I learn, the more I realize I do not know.

The announcement of the hire after signing day.
A Friday press conference.
Why not Monday?

Why not before signing day?

Fact is Butch new this wouldn't sit well with the fan base so he's doing whatever he can to ease tension.

If it were me and I hired Debord it would have been announced long before signing day and I wouldn't have told a bold faced lie. It would have been a typical Monday presser its not like they are trying to close a recruiting class at the moment.

you didn't tell him when to hold the news conference so he just had to pick a time

LOL Butch doesn't care about what the fan base thinks. It's funny that the fan base thinks he does. LOL

His responsibility and he is not going to let a bunch of opinions tell him who he is going to hire and does not give a damn about public opinion.

It's his responsibility as a coach this is not a democracy fans don't vote or have a say on it just an opinion.

I have read posts that stated I will not donate or attend games if he hires Debord. Really...LOL... someone will take their seat and someone will give money no matter who the assistant coach or OC is because it all rests on Jone's shoulders not Debord's.

Knew vs new.

Based on what was going around someone would have to be an idiot not to know that CBJ was not going to hire Debord.

The players knew it after his interview with CBJ.

CBJ and CMD showed class in addressing those of you who're disrespectful of them and of those of us who've been supporting them. On the other hand, those of you casting aspersions while claiming to be the voices of VN are showing shallowness and short-sightedness in posing as any form of experts at the game of college football. You're a minority who're only recognized due to the privilege of a free press and aren't the voices of anything but spoiled brats. Once this issue is settled with notable improvements on UT's offense, you'll naturally assign that aspect to better talent. Next, you'll move on to other bones to pick. Vomit one liners...look around the peanut gallery...then all of you chuckle as life passes you by. The glimmer of light on this particular thread is that ol' Mike surprised some of you by displacing your doubts with his obvious wisdom and the likelihood of his efficacy. Kudos to you who possess the nads to man up by admitting you may have been incorrect in your initial reactions.

It's fine that Jones hired DeBord. It's his hire, his decision, he will rise or fall with it--and that's how it should be. Correct: the fans don't pick coordinators, the coach does. That said, it is NOT fine for Jones to yank the fan base around with a bogus "search." He could have been honest about it and not given us this PR song and dance about how many guys he interviewed before finding the guy who was the right "fit." Jones knew who he was hiring from the get-go. The problem with major-college coaches is that they come to believe they can say anything, play the fans and not get called on it. DeBord didn't interview for the job, either--more PR spin, unless you consider being asked if you want a job an interview. Just stating the facts.

You just want to pizz and moan about something. Having a presser on Monday 8am, Friday noon, or Sunday at 3am will not win or lose a single game.

You don't like Butch. You wanted him to hire a propeller head with a big name that would disrupt everything. Why are you sweating the small stuff. Agenda??????

I'm not sweating anything.
I just don't agree with the hire its a pay back hire with huge risk. Sure he may know the offense but can he recruit? Can he relate to today's kids? After all there's a reason he hasn't been in a football related office in a number of years. I don't want a yes man I want someone with a backbone not some who says OK butch let's pass the ball insidd the 5 and hope for the best.

I never said I didn't like Butch I just don't agree with the hire.

I shouldn't have to explain. Its common sense

If you're great at what you do, you're usually always in demand. Hence why Gruden is mentioned for every football opening, along with many other coaches

Debord....not so much. He's been so in demand, he's not been mentioned for a coaching position for over 2 years or considered for a OC position since 2008. But, by all means, keep thinking he's the bestest in the world and has just been hiding away, waiting on the day he would return.
