Heh, agreed...however, even DeBord himself seemed a little tickled at how intense they were being by spending 2 hours on just 5 plays. He was poking fun at himself for it, while making the point that they're already deep into the process of self-scouting.
Not exactly. Butch just said that people throw the word 'spread' around all the time, and each person means something different by it. That he's all up for hearing a clear definition, and that we are NOT a finesse team, if that's what you mean by spread. He himself chooses not to use the term spread, because he thinks it's misunderstood. So he says, up-tempo no-huddle pro style (with a bunch of nuances listed after). But he sure didn't seem to mind DeBord using the term "spread," which he did at least a half dozen times.![]()
I'm not worried about the hire but those of you who are saying that he gave evidence of football knowledge during that press conference are simply wrong. It's the same mealy-mouthed, coach speak as always. NOTHING was said.
I find it increasingly odd that Butch and Co continue to do this at odd times. Like are you trying to duck the fan base?
I think his experience could be a good thing for this staff. Maybe he can help coach some of our offensive coaches. He seemed to stress his knowledge of the game.
He could also be a guy that is here for the long haul if things work out. He came a little short of saying he wasn't interested in a HC position but, for some reason, I got that vibe.
I dunno, will just have to wait and see. I really hope this works out (like everyone else here I think). Lord knows our offense needs some help.
the beauty of this offense is that you can do so many different things from the same set/look. it may not "look" creative, but it really is. up tempo, keeping the defensive personnel on the field and finding match ups.
it's definitely not a true spread like Meyer ran at UF or what Oregon has run in the past. but it does have spread elements, including the zone read.
it's a beautiful thing. and i think we'll see more of what Butch wants it to look like this year. i wont' say i was excited about deboard either, but for the sake of continuity, i do understand it, and we simply couldn't afford to adjust the offense too much with how many people are going to be back this year. no way you can throw a new offense at this group. and Deboard will do what Butch wants, with the same terminology etc...far easier to have one coach learn, (and his learning curve isn't going to be very steep) then re teach the whole offense, again.
the key going forward is the development of Dobbs as a passer and the O line in general. if he can do that, then i'm good.
What time's convenient for you? Post it here, and maybe the Mods can get it to the AD's front office.
You seem to believe there is something odd about the timing of this conference. It's not the 6 o'clock news, it's something that might be REPORTED ON during the 6 o'clock news, which means the news organizations appreciate it earlier in the day.
Not sure how some can call him an upgrade without seeing him call plays in a game not just off tape 10 years old. There's a reason he's been in a non football office all this time. I have doubt's hes the answer. Its butch call though either they'll win or theyll both be on the way out.
The announcement of the hire after signing day.
A Friday press conference.
Why not Monday?
Why not before signing day?
Fact is Butch new this wouldn't sit well with the fan base so he's doing whatever he can to ease tension.
If it were me and I hired Debord it would have been announced long before signing day and I wouldn't have told a bold faced lie. It would have been a typical Monday presser its not like they are trying to close a recruiting class at the moment.
Exactly...This guy is already familiar with the terminology, he's not going to have to "un-learn" anything which is huge for the players and the coaches. His NFL experience is invaluable...put another way...Bajakian will be a better coach after one week in the NFL, this guy has already taken that humbling path. When college coaches are spending time recruiting, NFL coaches are studying the game.
If this were Cutcliffe I think many would be jumping up and down... and he's two years older, the entire offense would have to be scrapped because there is no way Cut would unlearn his terminology to make it fit, it's too difficult for a play caller. Folks don't understand how difficult it can be.
