Post Press Confrence Thoughts

Sounded very knowledgeable, CBJ and Peyton Manning likes him why would Vol Nation doubt him?

Hey, that's what we do! Call in radio shows spouting off about how the Manning kid is only getting more reps because Fulmer is buds with his Dad Archie and that Branndon Stewart is twice the quarterback because he's more mobile.

We've been second guessing coaches and looking stupid for years.

I think his experience could be a good thing for this staff. Maybe he can help coach some of our offensive coaches. He seemed to stress his knowledge of the game.

He could also be a guy that is here for the long haul if things work out. He came a little short of saying he wasn't interested in a HC position but, for some reason, I got that vibe.

I dunno, will just have to wait and see. I really hope this works out (like everyone else here I think). Lord knows our offense needs some help.

Debord said he can't wait to fire up the VCR and start watching film.

Heck, from what he said, he's already way down that road. Talked about spending 2 hours the other day dissecting the elements of five plays. Five plays!

He's catching up. There's a bullet point in his contract that he wasn't allowed to bring this with him from Michigan to watch game film.

Most on here would be very surprised how much time coaches spend analyzing film and looking for the most minute details and idiosyncrasies in order to get better. That's why it's so funny listening to drunken college kids and middle aged fat guys get on here and second guess them.

The experts on here are nearly as entertaining as the games themselves.

So is Butch saying our offense is not a spread offense and Debord seems to say that it is. Anyone else hear it that way?

Spread indicates the type of formation only. Many things can be done out of the spread formation.

Yeah. Just seemed like Butch said he did not know what people meant when they used the term spread offense and now Debord is using it constantly. Seems like they are not in sync or something. Just wondering.

I do not base my thoughts on what Tom Brady, Peyton Manning or any of the others said. I base it on what Butch and Debord said. I think he is well qualified and will do a good job. So far, I trust Butch. The head coach knows his hires will, in large part, determine his future with the Vols. This is the man he thinks will provide continuity in his type offense and the man he wants to run it. Good enough for me. Go Vols.

It's a pro style spread offense with elements of a power running style coupled with a deep passing game and elements of the west coast offense which harkens back to a Mike Martz passing down field passing attack which is up tempo and uses intermediate routes for a quick strike offense with a dash of veer option, the forward pass, and the four corners while being Tom Brady approved.

Seriously,

It was 83rd in the nation in total offense and 65th in scoring offense.

It's his job to make it better. If he doesn't, Butch just burned a bunch of equity with the hire.

I think that was Coach Jones' way of telling most of the experts on here and other places they have no clue what they are talking about. I'm sure Jones and his staff are all on the same page.

Most on here have no clue what they are talking about when they use the term spread. They think it's a style or scheme when it's not. Just like many on here think the Vols run a read option on most plays when they actually only run a true option a few plays a game.

Agree. As long as they're on the same page in the beginning, we may have a chance. Debord seems like a knowledgeable guy.

Yeah. I pretty much qualify as one of those that do not know. I love the game but have a lot to learn. The more I learn, the more I realize I do not know.

Heh, agreed...however, even DeBord himself seemed a little tickled at how intense they were being by spending 2 hours on just 5 plays. He was poking fun at himself for it, while making the point that they're already deep into the process of self-scouting.

So is Butch saying our offense is not a spread offense and Debord seems to say that it is. Anyone else hear it that way?

Not exactly. Butch just said that people throw the word 'spread' around all the time, and each person means something different by it. That he's all up for hearing a clear definition, and that we are NOT a finesse team, if that's what you mean by spread. He himself chooses not to use the term spread, because he thinks it's misunderstood. So he says, up-tempo no-huddle pro style (with a bunch of nuances listed after). But he sure didn't seem to mind DeBord using the term "spread," which he did at least a half dozen times. :)
