First and foremost it's embarrassing that a few morons would paint the rock with what it had on it this morning. Unbelievable how some people act. Dooley will not be fired before the season ends period. So all of these threads and people talking about John Gruden (who isn't coming here) and others might as well save their breath at least until the smoke clears... Dave Hart does not care what Joe Shmo thinks about Derek Dooley and it will not affect his decision to keep him or not. It only embarrasses the program and brings negative attention when idiots do things like paint the rock with Fire Coach Dooley. I think we've had and seen enough negativity around here over the last four years especially so let's not throw gas on that fire.

I've never been one to say Dooley is the answer b/c he hasn't gotten a fair shake. NO ONE WANTED THIS JOB WHEN HE TOOK OVER. NO ONE. The reasoning behind that is everyone who was worth a damn realized how bad our program was and how depleted our talent was. Dooley knew this as well, but still has developed our roster from basically nothing and is starting to have a roster than can compete. Our offensive line and skill guys are a prime example of that.

For whatever reason we cannot get it together on defense. I'm as confused as anyone as to why that is b/c most of our problems are due to not getting lined up correctly and making bonehead mistakes, which we go over in meeting rooms and in practice. This is year 1 of coach Sal's defense so there are always going to be growing pains involved with that process, but we have got to pick it up on that side of the ball. Period. We will get better on this side as Sal has time to bring in guys that fit his style and system, but we should be playing better on this side of the ball.

Thoughts from the game:

1. We controlled the LOS on offense and our O-line is playing VERY well as of late which is always pleasing to see. Unfortunately we lost Neal probably for awhile still awaiting official word, but it doesn't look good.

2. Justin Hunter has got to be more consistent. The kid has all the talent and potential in the world and flashes it at times, but he needs to step up when the game is on the line. CP is a freak.

3. Justin Coleman played his best game of the year and is starting to show what he's capable of... Kid is going to be a player. McNeil played well, but showed rookie mistakes at times too. Losing Randolph really hurt us in the back end.

4. Our LB are slow. There's no other way to put it we lack speed here in a bad way. I understand the philosophy calls for bigger guys at these positions in coach Sal's scheme, but our lack of speed out of: Lathers, Johnson, and Maggitt has hurt us especially against teams who like to spread it out. Maggitt has an excuse b/c he has a hurt toe which I'm sure impairs his ability to run at full speed and acceleration too, but when these guys are asked to play man or match up against a TE/RB in space we are at a disadvantage. AJ finished the game with 21 tackles and is a great ILB, but he needs to work on his speed in the offseason.

5. Coach Dooley said it best in the Derek Dooley show today when he said for whatever reason there's always one quarter where we just fall apart. Good teams don't do this especially on a consistent basis. Furthermore, you cannot expect to beat good teams when you have lapses like that. People can point the finger at the coaches all they want to, but at some point the players have to take control and accept responsibility and make the plays!

6. The sky is not falling. Everyone needs to take a breath and for those who cannot control their emotions or contain themselves maybe you shouldn't post after games until you've had time to calm down or mature... We play the #1 team in the country at our place this weekend let's get behind this team as this is a HUGE game for our program this coming Saturday. I'll post again later in the week on our matchup against Bama when I have time. I'm just as disappointed in the loss as anyone and frustrated that we cannot seem to get the monkey off of our back for whatever reason, but stay positive Volnation it's not as bad as it may seem...

Being from Bucksnort(the hub of all good sources past and present) you should know that we are already looking for a new coach. Fans are tired of losing and the Rock is as well.

wah, wah, it's not the coaches fault, wah, no idea how this could happen, dooley hasn't been given a fair shake....

well coached teams are prepared, polished, and execute. They also don't fall apart for 25% of every game. It's likely that we'll play the #1 team in the country every year, because most years they will be in the SEC. When your HC can't beat ANY ranked team, you're screwed.

I'm sorry, but when you're in year 3 and no improvement has been made then its time for a change.

How has no improvement been made? This just shows what most of the people calling for Dooley's head don't know what they are talking about...

1. We've improved our running game tremendously this year and our O-Line (who are all Dooley guys except Thomas) are one of the best in the league.

2. Our talent has gotten better to where we can actually compete with good teams for four quarters instead of just one half of the game. We have had a chance to win all three games we've lost except one in the final minutes of the game. Our kids just have never been there before and say what you want in those situations that matters. We need to get that monkey off of our back.

3. The main area that hurts us and melts down for a quarter a game is our defense. It's year 1 under a new defensive coordinator there are always going to be growing pains when you have turnover like that. Dooley didn't ask Wilcox and Sirmon to leave but he had to play the hand he was dealt and got a more than suitable replacement IMO. We haven't played one game of solid defense all year, if we can put one together we will see that we aren't in as bad of shape as most think.

4. Yes your argument of "what does any of that matter if we don't win at the end of the day?" has some legs to it, but to make the claim that after 3 years under Dooley we are not way better off than when he got here is ignorant. We play in the hardest conference in the country and have had to rebuild our program from NCAA sanction-like trouble... There is improvement. There is better talent on this team. We just need to get over that hump.

Saying no one wanted the job is complete bs. Al Golden or Kevin Sumlin would have taken the job.

Kevin Sumlin wasn't offered this job three years ago. He was just starting to take over at Houston. And yes for those who actually know what they are talking about in this situation (I am one of those people whether you choose to believe it or not is your choice) they know that NO ONE who was established or up and coming wanted this job b/c of how bad of shape the program was in at the time. (Will Muschamp) Believe what you want but that's the truth.

How many years of 6-6 will it take you to change your tune?

Can you honestly say next year will be any better with Dooley at the helm?

There has been improvement just not enough to make everyone happy enough. Make no mistake though ...there has been improvement. Last year we werent even in the game in the 2nd half

If SBV is to believed, and he usually is...there's no point in talking about what Dooley or this staff need to do. The die is cast.

The "Trying to Confirm" thread refers.

Go Vols.

Yes I can say that next year will be better with Dooley at the helm. I'm not saying that Dooley is the answer here. Never have, but kids and other programs already use the fact that our program stability, which matters to an 18 year old kid and his family when choosing where to go to school about as much as anything, against us. So your answer is to fire a man who took a risk in taking this job, has increased our depth from practically nothing, has gotten us to where we are actually in games in the 4th quarter now, and leads our program with integrity and go get someone else? 4 head coaches in 6 years is almost unheard of especially at a place like TN. Sal is in his first year here and the kids are learning how to play in his defense. That stuff isn't picked up overnight.

The only way I see us getting rid of Dooley is if a top tier coach shows interest and at this point I'm not ready to comment on that b/c it's not going to happen until after the season regardless, so what's the point? We have several candidates that would jump at the chance to come here and coach now that our program is in better shape than it was four years ago... But why is that? Hmmmm Say whatever you want, but we owe Dooley a debt of gratitude for taking this job and creating a foundation of integrity and character first (which if you can recall was lacking in our last regime) and getting quality players in here as well. Yes Dooley hasn't won a big game yet. Yes I'm just as frustrated as the next guy that hasn't happened. Yes Dooley could be fired at the end of this season, but I'm not going to comment on that until it actually happens.

When Bob Stoops was hired at OU he was their fourth coach in six years. That has worked out well.

That's the exception, not the rule. Agree with you tho that has worked out very well for them which is why I said the only way we get rid of Dooley is if we have a top tier guy showing interest, but at this time I'm not ready to comment on that yet.

I'm focused on what we have now and how we can get better now.

They play of the players is laid at the feet of the coaches.

Sal FREAKS out on the Sidelines. Dooley does too. They are in positions of power and influence on these kids lives. Something that has became evident is that these kids are not coached to WIN. They are coached to keep it close. There is no "killer" instinct in these kids. That is something that is COACHED into them. When a good team gets close to beating another or they have an opportunity for a win they "throttle down" and get the job done.

These kids are raw talent with zero drive.

Miss State was on their Heels... blood in the water.... no ability for the Vols to throttle down and seal the deal.

Georgia was on their heels...blood in the water... no ability for the vols to throttle down and seal the deal.

How many other teams can we insert the name of in this sentence... Far to many..

Dools needs to figure out how to coach the team to WIN not to be CLOSE.

He is our coach.. no doubt about it.. will be at least till the end of the year.

Fred, your post was honest, well-thought-out, ... but for the most part entirely wrong. Surely you saw what I did last night: a Tennessee team that is slow, has no discipline, no mental toughness, and is unskilled in the fundamentals of football. To watch them play is to understand why in 2 1/2 years under Derek Dooley, Tennessee is winless against ranked opponents and a dismal 4-15 in the SEC (soon to be 4-17).
Two final thoughts: the monkey on our back is named Derek Dooley; and yes, it is as bad as it seems. It may in fact be worse.

Coaches that have good players win lots of games and look like geniuses. Coaches that don't have enough good players lose lots of games and people want them fired. (Muschamp may not be a great coach but he inherited a team stocked with high quality players). Our coaches don't teach these players to line up wrong, run slower than the opposition, or make mental mistakes occasionally. We have good players, some that are very talented, but just not enough. We are not at the talent level of the top SEC teams yet.

Our team is moving in the right direction, but right now we are hit and miss. It wouldn't shock me if we beat Alabama and lost to Vanderbilt.

Auburn is considering firing a coach two years removed from a NC and you don't think we have a right to call for Dooley's head, he is 4-15 in almost three years. We see the same old crap week in and week out, see two timeouts for not being able to line up to punt the ball. We see fumbles ( see that big two star stud Devrin Young), would rahter see Patterson who actually makes things happen when he touches the ball, and I could go on and on. We had two weeks to practice for the breakdowns we saw last night. It is not coaching call it anything you want but that.
