I grew up listening to the Vols on radio more than they ever got to play on TV ... in fact I remember watching the 1971 Sugar Bowl with UT going against Air Force on a 13 inch color tv that Dad just bought, our first color tv by the way. A few years before that, dad had a party when we all crowded around a black/white console to watch Oklahoma beat us in the Orange Bowl (1968).
The players played with passion and were proud to be called a Vol .... remember how Jack "Hacksaw" Reynolds took the loss against Ole Miss when Archie Manning chewed them up for a 38-0 score on previous unbeaten Tennessee?
Old number 44 Bobby Majors was my football idol with his dangerous punt returns that scared many an opposing football team.
These guys bled orange and that's what I want to see back in the program for Volunteer football players. I personally believe that it all begins with strength and conditioning. We were manhandled pretty much by every team this year. Fundamentals ...... I watched Kentucky run the option quite a bit the other day. Though I've never played organized football (I have coached and played organized softball, baseball, and soccer) and even I know that in an option you have 2 defenders right there ... one to cover the QB and one to cover the pitchman. If the QB pitches, you stay on your man and make him pay! He'll be a little more cautious next time. Part of the game.
College football is a lot more civil now than it was years and years ago. I've heard stories from relatives that when my granddad play at Tennessee in 1921 under MB Banks and they still had leather helmets, my granddad, a defender, had a wingback coming at him and tried to stiff arm him. Granddad bit a plug out of his palm and made him fumble. Guy got up screaming "He bit me!" Ref asked, did you bite him and granddad spit out a piece of meat and said, "I did not!" True or not, I don't know. Fortunately, the players are a lot more protected now than they were 90 years ago but they should still keep the same winning attitude and play for keeps when they wear the ORANGE! Being stronger than your opponent is where it starts in my opinion. The sign above the door at Neyland says it all ....
Looking forward to a better year next season.
