Post about Gators turned to Who's Our Biggest Rivalry Thread

I think Florida will be the toughest opponent on our schedule for several years to come. This thread took a turn towards who our biggest rival is and, of course, that depends on the view of the individual. Florida is the game that is most necessary to win the east but does that constitute the biggest rivalry? To me it will always be Alabama. I have said this before and I still honestly and truly mean it. "If I had a choice of going 11-1 and losing to Alabama or going 1-11 and beating Alabama.... I WOULD TAKE THE LATTER WITH NO HESITATION. To me Florida is just a great opponent that must be beaten to win the east but it is not a rivalry.

Let this happen 3-4 years in a row, and you'll change your mind.

What constitutes a rivalry then? Spurrier did a good job of making at a rivalry. Alot of people took it personal when Spurrier said "can't spell Citrus without a UT". Smartass remarks from coaches tend to make it a rival. Alabama is a program that has not posed a serious threat to UT winning the SEC East in a while. The only time they have beat UT in in years was 2005. The OT game was great also. It might be where they fall on the schedule, because by the 3rd week of October the East and West champions are usually determined

IMO I don't think that many people hate bama these days. Bama is more traditional and one of those fun old college football games. During that week you hear all the bama jokes by the old men and everything and it looks so great seeing the orange and crimson in the fall at Neyland. The Florida game is just about pure hate. Everything about Florida sucks.

obviously i want a win over both teams. but an alabama win is much more important to me than a Florida win. TN Woodsman said it right when Florida is a must win game. Alabama is, was, and always will be the bigger rivalry. i wouldn't take 1-11 over 11-1 with a loss to alabama, but I'd much rather beat bama than florida.

Alabama may be the bigger rivalry but a win over an East team far outweighs a win over a West team and it always will while we are fighting for a chance to get into the SEC championship game....

I'd be happy to get into a BCS bowl this next year. Replacing 9 out of 11 on defense is a tough task, and we're in the wrong conference to be questionable on that side of the ball. Masking defensive weaknesses only works in the Big 10. :cray:

difference of opinion. an alabama win is more important to me. I know that if ut doesn't beat florida, they need a lot of luck to win the east, but an alabama loss will linger for years on me. i'm still not over last year's loss.:yuck:

I'd rather have the chance to play in the SEC title game with a guaranteed chance at a BCS game rather than have a slim chance we get an at large but your right I guess it's just difference of opinion...:peace2:

Just a generation gap. You feel a stronger sense of hate over a Bama loss. A Florida loss is hurtful to the younger fans because of the trash talk from Spurrier (can't spell Citrus w/o UT), the trash talk from players (make a sandwich in our house), and the close/bitter losses that kept us from SEC titles (2000 Gaffney catch, 1996 second half collapse, 2002 wet ball drill with Clausen, 1999 Alex Brown sackfest...etc).

I know this isn't what you were looking for, but your stuff will be infinitely more decipherable if you'll use some punctuation.

You do realize Alabama beat Tennessee in 2002 as well, right?

Yeah... but I try to forget the Clausen years. But Alabama just hasn't been the thorn in the side like Florida has. I remember running around jumping up and down when Peyton ran the "naked bootleg", and I was more excited in 98 when we finally beat UF.

florida should always recruit good. just the fact alone that you have the beach and warm weather should always bring in a great class of talent. but dont chomp to soon gaterboy. injuries, going pro early can always put a big dent in any recruiting class.

You would be surprised at the number of Vol fans that would still be willing to sacrifice a loss to Florida for a win over Alabama...

These people are hung up on the past. Alabama used to be the biggest game of our season... before the conference expanded. Not that I'm saying that I don't mind beating Bama, but some of our older fans have more hate for Bama than for Florida, which explains why many of them are Fulmerites and give him a pass because he has consistantly beaten Alabama, even though he's struggled with Florida, bowl games, top 25 teams, etc...

Of course all games are important. No matter the opponent they still only count one in the column. For me the best feeling is beating Florida first then Bama. I also have a friend who is a HUGE LSU fan so beating them when we play is also great. Too bad he has had more to rub in my face of late :twocents:

UF did not bounce back after a coaching change, they actually got someone who could coach and recruit. Zook left the cupboards stocked with talent but had no idea what to do with it. If you look he's doing the same thing @ Illinois.

UF or bama is an age thing, over 30 it's bama and under 30 it seems to be UF. UF has been nowhere near the opponent that bama was when they were reeling off 9,10, 11 wins in a row vs the Vols. During that time the gators were an afterthought in the SEC. The bama series changed in 95 but I will never forget how much I despise them (in a good way). I still have the front page of the paper framed from 95 beatdown!

First I hate to lose any games. Second, I don't consider myself the delusional I hate Alabama and even if we go 1-11 but beat them it's ok. I want to win SEC East titles first and for most and the easiest way to do that is to beat Florida.

i agree with that statement. i can't imagine accepting an 1-11 year w/ a victory over bama better than an 11-1 year with loss to bama. however my first must win game is bama, then florida, then so on. my idea is to just start consistently beating both every year to make this debate useless. of course, it already is useless.
