Posssible Replacements for Coach Pearl

Brad Stevens is the Chris Petersen of college basketball. Every imaginable big time school with an opening is going to call, but he's probably not going to leave unless someone throws an ungodly amount of money at him, and even then, it's still unlikely. Worth a call to check his temperature, I suppose.

If Lawrence Frank would entertain an offer, he'd be the first guy I'd offer the job to. I really like Chris Mooney from the Richmond games I've watched this year. Shaka Smart wouldn't be a bad hire either.

I don't think Stevens would leave. I think Smart is a great choice because his style of play is similar to what Bruce brought when he came here--and let's face it, that's part of what helped fill the arena. It's fun stuff.

Plus, the guy is young, energetic, not a retread from another major school, and relates to his players in a way that might just salvage our recruiting class.

1) Stevens - see above. However, I think he's waiting for a good Big Ten or Big East offer (i.e. Indiana, Notre Dame type). Why come to UT with NCAA uncertainty?

2) Anthony Grant - long shot I know, but if the rumors are true and he really is unhappy in Tuscalooser (imagine that), then putting a feeler out there would certainly be worth it. It may at least put a scare into Ala and make them pay more to keep him.

3) Lawrence Frank - making $500-700k right now as asst with Celtics. Offer him $2 mil. He can sell the kids on knowing what it takes to get them to the NBA, which is all 99% of them care about anyway.

4) Young mid-major caoch - throw 'em in a pot and pick one whether it's Shaka Smart, Gregg Marshall, Chris Mooney, etc. At least they will be hungry, but remember for every Bruce Peal there a million Buzz Petersons and John Pelphreys.

5) Tubby Smith - would at least bring stability and some credibility to the program.

6) Rick Byrd - I would not discount this, his father is very highly regarded in Knoxville and Byrd is a UT grad. I also would not foresee any NCAA issues with him, but his age (as with Smith) concerns me a little.

Larry Brown/Bobby Knight - no way, get real.

I would be absolutley giddy if we were able to pull any of your top 3.

Anyone else I would be worried we would have to start completely over from square one with.

Or go after the scary Kansas St. coach Frank Martin....

He reminds of the crazy Brit Vinnie Jones....

Stevens, Mooney, Smart

Problem with a big name coach is that the expectations are too high with what they will inherit. Not saying one can't be found, but is is going to be prohibitively expensive.

Coaching choices...from who is available..

#1 Harvey Schmidlap - Northeast Georgia School of Small Appliance Repair

#2 Clem Snotgrass - South Central Alabama Detective School

#3 Julio Sanchez - West Texas Rustlers Rodeo and Horse College

UT will be lucky to get a decent young mid-major coach to show any interest. I would love a big splash hire but that seems very unlikely with an AD in hot water and probably probation and loss of scholarships. We most likely hire a care-taker coach that will make it 2-3 years before getting canned and then we'll go after a big name.

Any chance we could steal Josh Pastner away from Memphis?

Or, if you wanted to watch the most boring basketball ever, Tony Bennett Jr. from UVA.

Well, they can run, but I don't like the lasso defense.

It will be a good hire (hopefully). CBP brought the program to a new level. It should be a desired destination for a new coach. Maybe a couple of speed bumps but it will be a top 25 program again.

A few coaches at smaller schools

Bobby Cremins-- College of Charleston
Steve Alford--- New Mexico
Lon Kruger---- UNLV
Tommy Amaker--- Harvard
Donnie Tyndall-- Moorehead St

not recommending any just food for thought.

1. Bruce Pearl; he is a proven winner, he brings crazy energy and excitement to a program, etc...

My friends tell me i have trouble letting go...

These mid-major coaches will def. have interest in UT, with the possible exception of Stevens at Butler. Some of you folks act like we are still going to be punished as if Pearl were here. It was only his name that was listed in the alegations not the schools. Remember there is one thing that speaks louder than anything else... $$$$.
A $950,000 check sounds a lot better than $250,000.

Honestly, this is what I'm excited about. Watching these mid-majors play is like watching art. They are so well coached, run actual set plays, and know how to rebound and defend. Watching a Pearl team is, sorry was, like looking at a Jackson Pollock knockoff.

And how many coaches in Div 1 has had the six yr run that Pearl had? He may have needed and/or deserved to be fired but he is a very good coach.
