Possible tougher road for Vols/Sec to win national title

Reports saying 12 team playoff will be structured with 4/5 conference champions automatically getting top 4/5 seeds. Meaning only one Sec team gets a coveted bye and rest would have to win 4 games to take home a title.

To have any teams have to win four games to win the title is absurd. After a 12-game regular season? 16 games total? Absurd. The 12-game playoff was an idea driven by greed and stupidity.

Maybe finishing 3rd in Sec is sweet spot…extra week off when top two teams have to play in Atlanta…that’s a possible 5 extra games after regular season for the runner up. That’s a terrible spot to be in.

FCS champion has to win 4 games every year, occasionally 5 if the team doesn't get a bye in first round..

We were not playing for the national title this year.

Should’ve gone with a 6 or 8 team playoff

Nobody is winning 4 games in the playoffs....Possible, of course, but massive long shot. You'd be at 16-games played by the title game. Good luck with that. A 12-team playoff is just the usual "expand the playoffs" to sucker more fans into watching games on TV---the college equivalent of "wild-card."

Beating the other conference champions won’t be that tough of a deal. Auto bids, while grossly unfair, only serves to help the 3-4 other SEC schools that make it into the playoffs because that first round game is going to be against a winner of a weak conference.

6 conference champs get automatic bids and then the top 6 ranked not champs get an at large. top 4 get the byes..

The group of 5 team automatically getting in is a joke. Unless they are actually ranked 12 or higher in the college football playoff poll. This year it would have been Liberty. Where were they ranked in the polls after the conference championship games?
21st if I remember correctly

Yes I am just saying instead of 2-3 Sec teams taking up those top 4 spots and only having to win 3 games as we first thought…every Sec team that doesn’t win the conference is automatically going to have to win 4 games. Not easy road to haul for anyone. Benefits Clemson/Fsu in weak Acc and Big 12 weak champ the most. This also means you are going to see quite a few Sec/Sec matchups and Sec/Big Ten matchups in first round on campuses.
I would think the top rated teams would have the same ration in the 12 teams participation in the p[layoffs. There is the possibility that the SEC and the Big Ten schools could be rate in the top 4 and maybe another team rated in the top 12. Just because your team, who is playing in a much weaker conference should be rated in the top 6 in the playoff standings. They could be rated in the 9-12 range rather than in the 1-6 range.

That sounds more realistic. It would look bad to have a #7 ranked team get a bye over a #4 ranked team just because #7 won their conference and #3 didn't.

Well if you're in the top 12 and don't make it to your Conference Championship Game or don't play one, you would have a bye week going into the playoffs.

That’s exactly what is going to happen…the Acc champion or Big 12 champion is going to be ranked like 10th overall and still get the 4 seed and the bye.

Just wait. In a few years people will say 12 teams isn’t enough. Then it will be 16, then 32….

Should have always been 16…they have been doing bigger playoffs forever in lower level college football. If they would have had 16 team playoffs this entire time teams like Bama would never have gotten as strong as they did because other schools could still sell they played for titles. Literally every other sport in college has a 16 team plus postseason. The NFL has 32 teams and still has 14 teams make playoffs.

If it were just the teams we have to go through to get to the playoffs, I'd be fine. Our biggest problem is that the NCAA is placing mines all along our path in every damned sport it feels like. Until we get those goons out of our hair, I can't imagine contemplating a playoff run much less a natty. Right now I'll be shocked if Nico is still at UT come the fall. No doubt in my mind that if we fail to get the injunction, the NCAA will immediately move to declare him ineligible....at UT, but he'll be free to go anywhere else and be immediately eligible.
Nico isn't going anywhere
