Possible New Player for 2010- LSU Signee, OG Elliott Porter

Based on an article on govolsxtra, sounds like we wouldn't have room for him if he is not considered a transfer. They state that we only have 2 spots available for the 4 guys - Brown, Loften, Dixon & Jackson, yet to qualify. Which one of those do you take with Brown if they all 4 qualify?

what article? i thought we only have 77 scholarship players and you can have up to 85?

This is classic whether we get this guy or not. If we are recruiting against LSU we can always ask the recruit "Are you sure they have a scholarship for you?", " Do you want to go through summer workouts in LA. just to find out they don't have room for you?".

You do understand that we are in the same situation as LSU right? We have oversigned as well if a few folks qualify, granted they aren't supposed to, but it is what it is.

I did not know that. I read this as Porter was blindsided by the grayshirt. I would hope that our staff has explained the situation to a recruit in jeopardy of having to grayshirt. BTW who may have to grayshirt?

I don't really know to be honest, I'm just relaying what I saw LWS type in a thread.

Just another reason why Miles is a idiot. They have to be paying players, there isn't another reason to play for that imbecile.

The whole recruiting system needs to be changed. For the record I don't like this. I will be cheering for the kid if he makes it to Tennessee.

I would say he is a OL project, he will be a redshirt either at Tenn or LSU so it really is a matter of how much he thinks this is a slap in the face. He was signed as a OL but played DT in HS, so that is a possibility at TN. Could turn out to be a real good player.

If Miles gave him an unconditional release, I have to wonder why?

what happened at LSU is similar to what Tennessee is looking at.

we have 2 spots left and 4 kids trying to get eligible for them. if all 4 get eligible, we have exact same issue LSU had.

The had more gets get eligbile than they thought would so they asked him to gray shirt. If Lofton, Brown, Dixon and Jackson all get eligible, Dooley is going to have to do some back tracking on some kids also. Ask someone to gray shirt or release someone. two someones if all 4 make it.

of course if we take Porter and all 4 get eligible, then CDD is dealing with 3 kids to do something with.

I agree, the system really does need to change. I feel bad for this kid. I think he got shafted by Miles and company. I would like for UT to take this kid but if Brown and Loften make it in I would rather take them instead because both would be competing for starting positions. IMO

Larry, 2 questions, would Porter be considered a transfer since he has been taking classes on a part time basis at LSU this summer? If so, he would not count toward the 25 but the 85 correct?

Second, for all the years I have lived in Baton Rouge, it always seems LSU finds out about the eligiblity of all of their kids before UT does. Very rarely do they have to wait past the opening of the season to find out about someone. Do you have any idea why this might be happening? Is the clearing house broken up by regions or is there just one handling it all?

It's a bad situation. LSU didn't think everyone would be eligible, everyone made the grades. The system needs to be changed for sure.

He's a good kid, good chance he ends up a Vol if there is room there. Hearing he still wants to be a Tiger but I can't blame him for leaving, either way he was not going to be playing this year.

I agree. If only 2 schollies are really left, Brown and Loften are far and away more important than Porter. That's not even debatable. I hope going after him isn't a sign that they've all but given up hope on one or both of them making it. Those would be terrible blows.

if he is a transfer, which the NCAA will decide, than he counts on 85 and not 25.

I think NCAA is just one entity.

Sounds like LSU staff has historically helped their recruits out more than Tennessee has if that is your perception.

I know for several years now, Tennessee football staff has struggled to get the the academic sides help in getting kids into school. there is a real wall there..

most of the time, the clearinghouse issues have to do with getting all the appropriate paperwork on a recruit. lot of that paperwork has to come from the high school. Can't remember the kids name and it was a florida kid, but I know that Fulmer had someone calling the kdis high school everyday trying to get them to round up the paperwork and get it submitted to Clearinghouse. went on for weeks. Academic side should coordinate that.

I don't know what the issues are between academics and athletics that cause this wall to be there, before someone asks.

The radio talk shows here in Baton Rouge are saying Porter would have to get a release from the NCAA to play immediately somewhere else. They say since he has been enrolled as a part time student at LSU this summer he would be considered a transfer. Miles has just released him from his LOI. Odds are he will accept the grey shirt since he is from BTR and always wanted to be a tiger - just got caught off guard with the request and didn't know how to react.

Beyond a shadow of a doubt, Loften.

Is there no penalty for LSU telling this kid, who's already on campus, "Tough luck, loser. Because we irresponsibly signed more players than we have scholarships for and because some neanderthals managed to work the system and get cleared by the NCAA there's no room for you"?

No doubt! From what I have read about Loften he seems to think he is good to go just waiting to be cleared. Brown seems more of a long shot though.
