Possible Drop Off in Strength & Conditioning?

Getting tacked easy (RBs), getting pushed around (OL) and not getting off blocks (DL) are all points that have been made by Vol Nation and all issues that can all be associated with the strength of out players.

S&C which was a huge concern of mine going into this season. We promoted a guy who basically had zero Power 5 S&C experience. To me that was a risky decision at best when you consider we had front row tickets to what happens when we fail to replace an experienced S&C coach with an experienced S&C coach.

I hate to give Will Friend an out, because in my opinion each position coach should also know the best S&C routines for their position group, but I cannot help but wonder and worry if there is something to this.
The players weren’t on campus like they usually are to train due to covid..... we got whipped physically by the number 2 team in the country that whipped the other two teams it played as well

Given what we did to Missouri's defensive line, I'm not fully concerned. The running back issue is mostly because they're built to outrun people, not run through people, at least our main two guys. D Line held up incredibly well in the Georgia game, and I thought the linebackers played very well as well. The secondaries issues don't have much to do with S&C.

Covid...quarantine...basically no contact with the players. Yet, Spraggins and Simmons reported with outstanding weight loss with no loss of strength. Carry on.

Simmons has impressed so far. I hope he is good to go this week.
Surprised me. I expected playing time, but behind Emerson and Garland. He seized the job with no advance notice from our paid observers.

I think lack of spring training and full off season/fall camp is putting everyone on their heels from a conditioning standpoint...unless you're UGA/Bama and are stacked 2-3 deep with NFL talent. Didn't like the beat down on Sat but was encouraged that maybe D is starting to come around w/ several 3rd/4th down critical stops they made. Not sure what to make of OL and RB's...maybe UGA will be that much of an outlier w/ their talent...or maybe we're just not there yet w/ our talent.

You really think that they have gone backwards from the Butch years ? There is absolutely no comparison between then and now. I do think they got out coached because the ol looked confused, but I don't think it had anything to do with S&C. The running backs also go down way to easy usually on first contact.

I saw many more issues with technique, snap count issues, and missed assignments than being manhandled....

We've seen the results of poor S&C in the injury reports in the past and we havent seen that yet this year

Seems like we have a coaching and development issue. Hopefully the coaching gets corrected this week and these guys start playing with better technique. Gotta want to do it the right way, and be held accountable in practice.

Covid would likely have more to do with a dropoff in S&C than the new S&C coach. People seem to keep forgetting that all of our lives have been severely disrupted over the past 7 months and the football players are no exception. But I don't think the S&C program is the problem ... we manhandled Mizzou up front in the same way Georgia manhandled us.
You are correct. As much as I hate to admit it Georgia is just a better team than use right now. However we some good things that show we are gaining ground and will be there soon.

Pruitt is keeping Fitzgerald's routine by hiring Arlis who has his own tweaks on Fitzgerald's philosophies.

The 2021 season will be a better evaluation of the S&C program because the pandemic robbed UT s&c staff of real time work with the players.

Georgia’s players looked way stronger, but that could also be related to depth.
It's so simple we got dominate by the top defense in the country, in the second half and Chaney's play calling helped them, we went toe to toe with them for a half, as far as the SC program really we don't know that the new SC can do with all that has happen in 2020, we just played the top Defense in the Country our line will jell in the next couple of weeks and we will dominate, we don't have elite skill players on offense, nothing has change for the season going into the 10 game SEC schedule we knew 6 or 7 wins at most for this team, we are still 2 recruiting classes away from beating the elite teams, can we beat one of them yes but not week in and week out, at least when we take the field we got a chance to win, this time last year it was like just lose by 20 and you had a good day, there is no quick fix in the SEC.

nah, not saying that... just not in as good of shape maybe as Georgia was overall... again this comes from the points others have made about our OL, running backs etc... but some believe our O was just missing blocking assignments...

So now we are tired and out of shape?
I don’t know. Are we? OL wasn’t on the field much... they got run over. I think it is a fair consideration. That said, unanimous support for our S&C... so I will roll with a probably not as an answer to your rhteorcial question 🤣

Chandler's always gone down after first contact. He could be playing flag football and go down after the flag's pulled.
Gray also goes down easy but he has more shake so he looks good against teams without elite athletic ability. He did not look like a breakaway threat against Georgia when he had open space because they had the athletes to stop him.

Two 4th and 1 stops by the Dline against the no. 3 team in the country left me hopeful about team strength. Online seemed to be outnumbered as much as overpowered, and the ugliest sacks were due to speed, footwork, or choosing the wrong guy to block.

When you get embarrassed, everything is suspect but not sure SC Is the biggest concern.
Anytime we lose its the sky is falling who needs to be fired. I know its a hard pill to swallow but maybe just maybe we played a better team (which should be obvious) who also had a lot of familiarity with our OC and things went sideways. People let the fact UGA and Bama and FL are rivals color their views. These are normally very good to great teams. Losing to them sucks but it's not the end of the world. We beat them at times though not recently but the tide will turn. It always does. A lot of you haven't been around for the lean years Bama and UGA and Florida had over the decades, it all runs in cycles. When you play in the best league, at the highest level. this happens.

If we were in the OVC people would have a point. I personally have no worries because I know again in my lifetime w will reach the top again. If you look at the first half of that game we were right there..but they have more depth and more horses it showed in the second half. But this team is gonna get better and it's obvious on the field. Remember this time last year?
