Lane Kiffin on conversations with his new staff...

“We talk about doing things better here than they’ve ever been done before,”

..That just makes me smile.

“If we’re going to do that, and we’re going to sell that to a kid, and we’re going to sit in the living room and tell that kid that he’s going to get coached here better than anyone in college or the NFL, the only way we could do that was to put these two guys(Monte,Orgeron) together.”

Somebody was worried about chemistry. I'm not.

I hope all these platitudes translate to touchdowns in the fall. Right now it's just another way of saying "We're gonna work like heck.".

To an extent I agree with that, but the attitude at Tennessee is completely different now... The coach has fire and isn't taking any lip from the likes of St Steve either... We'll see this fall how it translates onto the field but I like what I'm seeing!

Raining there where you are?...

as a matter of fact......yes.

and has been for a while now. and it's warm.

the larger point here is that it's not hte same old same old.

work like heck doesn't hold true anymore. We knew what that meant. it meant the same thing for years. it never meant anything different. it meant we were going to do what we do because that's what we do.

the vibe i get from Kiffin and this staff is that they aren't going to work just for the sake of work.

the goal, if i interpret what i've seen and read so far correctly, is to use any means to get to a specific end. not just to work like heck.......

make sense?

after what CLK went through in Oakland I can't see him bringing in anyone that might not get along. He knows what happens when that becomes an issue

That job was divisive from the start. I don't think that he could have done much different.

I'm most impressed/excited by the strategic approach that CLK has taken. He clearly has a plan and formula in mind and is recruiting coaches that are both part of the plan and implementers of the plan. Maybe he's wrong but the structure and discipline is encouraging.

Good observation. Reminded me of this comment from TFP's Darren Epps this weekend...

"If this works, you will see major college football programs reanalyze their strategies of hiring assistants. The pay scale will change to compete with the NFL. Tennessee could be at the forefront of how major college football programs assemble staffs. This will, of course, continue to blur the line between amateur and professional athletics, but no one in Knoxville will care about that if the football team wins on Saturdays."

One more bit from Epps...

"This kind of staff, particularly with the father/son dynamic and the salaries, is completely unprecedented. You get the feeling this is going to work out unbelievably, and Tennessee will become USC East, or this group of NFL guys is just not going to work at all, Charlie Weis-style. One or the other. No in between."

Yeah, I mean they're all saying and seemingly doing the right things. We'll see how that translates on the field. I'll tell you this, for next season I'm not so much interested in seeing how many wins we will have under CLK as I am in seeing just how much of a different team this will be. I just get the feeling that the games will "feel" different and the players will look different, act different, perform different. It will definitely seem strange to go to a UT game and not see Fulmer pacing the sidelines.

I really do hope the games take on a more "blood thirsty" vibe where instead of us going out and playing someone like Georgia in the HOPES that we will win, I want us to go out with that killer instinct and just impose our will on them.

The first thing Lane Kiffin said about his style of play was that his teams would be physical.

If I see that on the offensive side of the ball this fall, season one will have been a success, and the stage will be set for future recruiting.

I was not too sure about this hire at the time, but given the choices we had, I think we did alright. Since that time, I have been impressed, too, with his methodical approach to assistant hirings, talking to recruits (and even letting them go), his discipline, and determination.

Good points, and I'll add to it... I've got a feeling that we will be working smarter. For an analogy, not continuing to repeatedly hamfist a square peg into a round hole, and hoping that the results will differ despite no change to the process.

two very insightful quotes. i agree with both wholeheartedly. they kind of sum up exactly how i've felt about this whole thing.

for the first time, well ever, i get the feeling we are the ones making the rules, rather than the ones trying to catch up.

it is a risk, but if it fails, it won't be because the best foot wasn't put forward.

The only thing I don't really see is the whole NFL connection, Monte aside. BPV though pointed out to me that while these are not NFL heavy resumes... they do have the feel of an NFL level staff. That I can see.

I also agree that what has happened thus far has that sort of unprecedented feel to it.

perception is reality, and Monte kind of puts it over the top.

you just aren't hearing the normal names you are used to hearing about college coaches, especially in the SEC. as incestuous as this league is with assistants and coordinators, there's a large contingent in Knoxville now that dont' have any real SEC ties, and since some of those guys last stop was the NFL......it lends itself to the feeling most of us have right now.

i know how to digest Kevin Steele and Rodney Garner et al.........it's taking me a little more to get my head around Monte Kifffin actually coaching at Tennessee.

the guy invented a defense for crying out loud.:p

Yep...it may not, top-to-bottom, be a group of veteran NFL guys, but it's a mix of big names. We'll have to see how the staff ultimately fills out, but I'm reminded of a text I received from a buddy of mine back in early December when describing the cast of characters he heard would make up UT's staff.....he said "it's like Ocean's 11...stars everywhere." With guys like Garner, Gonzales, and whomever else might end up in Knoxville, UT will definitely have an all-star roster of coaches.

I am just happy there is finally a positive buzz about the program. I really hope this momentum carries over to national signing day and then into September.

well that's the thing, it's just buzz. and if you remember, there was some pretty positive stuff going on last off season......Clawson was hired, and at at the time there was a genearl positive feeling about that hire. the recruiting class picked up a little steam, we won a bowl game, were coming off an SEC E title (if you believe in such things)....we had the bulk of that team coming back for this year........the spring game had everyone all excited for what might come. the schedule was set up for us.......we had revenge motiviation against FL and Bama and were fresh off another butt whipping of GA........

life was good last Spring.

how quickly that changed.

not trying to be a downer here, but just keeping things in perspective......i'm not expecting huge dividends in year one. I expect improvement. how that's defined........not sure yet.:) but like most everyone else, the 1st impressions of what is going on is very good. it's hard to imagine this not being successful going forward.

After the way this season went, I will take anything that is positive.

Improvement=more than 5 wins.

I know, that's setting goals pretty low for our standards.
