If the Fightin Heupels dont sign some impact corners and DEs, next year will be a mirror of this one.....

I understand we do not have roster room right now until after the spring. Need players to leave to gather more portal players.

Late!! I guy that becomes available after spring leads me to believe he "couldn't make it at his present program" If this is the case, then I don't expect he will be able to come into our program and be of much use immediately. A guy who could come into our program and have only summer and fall to "get it" would most likely not be in the portal anyway.

Roster management is going to absolutely make or break Heupel. Finding the right balance of HS recruiting & portal transfers will be critical to short-term progress which he'll need in order to keep the fanbase on board. He's got a really tough task ahead. The defense next year needs a major influx of talent and I'm not sure it's possible for him to fill all the needs at this point. That means we're likely to be watching several games next season that come down to the wire like Pitt/Kentucky/Ole Miss/Purdue did last year. Not much margin for error when you're in games like that. I agree that we seem to be behind several of our SEC rivals in the transfer/recruiting game.

Napier added 3 former players so far; a 6’8” 370lb Tackle, a 6’5” 330lb Guard who has a 2-3 round NFL draft projection and the conference Freshman of the year and leading rusher at RB.

“This is a talent acquisition business.” ~ Billy Napier

We don't know what that is. We just pretend a defense with no talent, that gets 40 hung on them every Saturday, and an offense that scored 14 and 17 on yall and UGA are going to magically be contenders next year because its year 2 of a new coach. We believe the gap between us and bama/uga is closing by getting boat-raced in recruiting.

Proof, Or reporting fake news?
When elsewhere calls and ask it doesn’t = trying to go elsewhere
i saw a few articles that had him potentially listed as a candidate for DC at Notre Dame. But those articles also had some more higher qualified candidates in the mix as well.

Crying about all that is worse than all that.

Especially to a gatorsuck.

Sun Belt conference, right?

just checking.

Yes. And his Sun Belt team would have kicked the hell out of the Florida team that ended the season, and probably a few other SEC teams. Also, O’Cyrus Torrence has earned his NFL draft projection after playing in the Sun Belt for 3 years. He’ll start immediately at UF. NFL caliber players come out of the Sun Belt from time to time.

Thats true but him saying it doesnt him a prophet. Thats ALWAYS been the case.

For a Florida fan base that is starving for a coach who takes recruiting deadly serious again, it was a really smart thing to say in his introductory press conference. More importantly, his actions since taking the job to back this up have been extremely encouraging to Florida fans.

Likely means little for the 2022 season, but it means a lot for the following years.

Stating facts doesn't make someone Chicken Little and there's no less nobility in being realistic vs being blindly positive.

You can't make absolute statements like that this far out. We have no idea what our opponents will look like. We DO know our offense will be better after a full year of games, a second spring and full offseason with the same starting QB. We DO know that two of our losses (UF and Pitt) will be much worse off than when we played them. Those are things we know.

Well first of all, 6-7 wins isn't "the sky is falling". That's still potentially a winning record and a bowl appearance. So responding with a sarcastic "the sky is falling" makes no sense to begin with.

Second, you don't have to be Nostradamus to see how our defense performed last season and what we have on the roster coming back this season and make a relatively rational observation. Based on what we have on our roster right NOW, 6-7 wins next year absolutely is a reasonable prediction. So if we want to show improvement from last year to this year from a W/L record standpoint, yes we are going to have to upgrade our defensive roster through the portal.

We’re dealing with issues with the numbers right now. Looking like the cap maybe 75 on scholarships. Heupel is really hamstrung by the numbers right now. Probably move more kids out and take a few more portal players later though.

Oh yeah, I know. I'm not blaming Heupel for our current situation. It is what it is. But the fact remains that our defensive roster has to get upgraded through the portal between now and spring or we are going to have to score a LOT to be in games this season.

I don’t disagree. I just don’t see an easy answer. It’s hard to turn around any team in the SEC, Heupel is trying to do it with a hand tied behind his back. I don’t think most of our fans realize the situation we’re currently dealing with.

Edit: I think LWS was saying we took like a 14 scholarship penalty during the Covid exemption now a 10 scholarship penalty this year. That’s a recruiting class difference in comparison to our peers.

It is. Hopefully with the transfer portal and the potential with rule changes that will allow teams to sign as many players as they lose in it, it wont take as long to rebuild the roster.

I am guessing the 14 number was a calculation based on a report of his I THINK that we only had 71 players on roster that were NOT super seniors who were allowed to stick around regardless of your relation to the 85.

Not sure the NCAA will buy that as a total counter penalty since we had no way to get above that number since if my memory is correct we had 17 normal Hs/juco guys and 8 transfers.

We are behind the rest of the conference and need to be more active, maybe that’s why they made the new hire from North Carolina.

Should we be worried about the lack of portal commits we have ? Looks like most of the top tier SEC schools have been doing better then us . I personally am I little worried looking at Ole Miss and Arkansas commitments
We should be if we want to do better than a ceiling of maybe the Citrus Bowl, 2nd place in East and no better than 8 wins in a season.

Like our coach. Like our players who have all stepped up to a higher level but we need players in same talent pool of teams we are trying to beat

So LSU has snagged 8 out of the portal so far - Are we going to even try to grab guys out of the portal? Like our neighbor that LSU grabbed?

The Tigers also added a standout offensive lineman in FCS All-American Tre’mond Shorts. Shorts started four years at East Tennessee State.
What exactly is our portal strategy? Seems like everyone but us is doing well there.
