Should we be worried about the lack of portal commits we have ? Looks like most of the top tier SEC schools have been doing better then us . I personally am I little worried looking at Ole Miss and Arkansas commitments
We do not have room currently

I assume this staff doesn't go shopping without a list, and I assume that for each position of need the list specifies:
physical capabilities
physical potential
mental capabilities/football IQ
experience
character
team culture compatibility
work ethic
...and maybe a few other things.

If the staff isn't finding players who improve us as a team, then we're better off improving with who we've got. There's also a lot of luck in signing good players in such a competitive environment. Some years you're going to be several guys' second choice.

My concern?
Heupel frequently mentions that recruiting the offensive side is much easier this year because we've now been able to show recruits what our offense will be like, rather than just describe it. But I'm wondering if we were able to show enough on the field of what we want to do and become on defense?

I know Banks wants us to complement the offensive strategy by becoming an aggressive defense that forces turnovers. And maybe our TFL stats reflect some of that attitude. But I question whether we had the size up front or speed at the corners to fully demonstrate what he intends to build. I'm concerned that without better turnover stats, our Time of Possession numbers are making us a hard sell for defensive recruits. For what we were last season on defense, you'd need to scout for guys at +250 lbs. who also ran cross country!

And banks has been trying to go elsewhere as a defensive coordinator. Makes ya wonder.

I understand we do not have roster room right now until after the spring. Need players to leave to gather more portal players.

Arkansas has really racked up. Ole miss is doing better than I thought. Bama stole an all American from lsu. Beamer has done well with it. Won't be any good ones left come spring

This. We over signed on high school players in the early signing period while trying to self impose scholly limits based on the internal investigation. I forget the exact date but we made the decision to purposely keep our roster of scholarship players under the 85 limit for one year and we have not reached a full year yet. I'm guessing sometime in the spring will be a year. Once that year is up you will see us adding more portal players. The mass exodus of players after Heupel was hired wasnt entirely because "our coach was fired and we dont like the new one". Many didnt have a choice.

There will be another wave after spring practice. There was last year.

I would SPECULATE that many of those already announced portal guys were convinced they knew their position in the depth chart before spring ball and others maybe a bit more talented think they have a shot and won't pull the trigger till they get the pulse after spring and after other players in similar circumstances later departures would change their position room. The players underground network of communication may be able to provide staff with tips on potential guys they know in other places and a couple of legal winks might tip the scales.

Some might really need to see their grades on paper AFTER spring if they are borderline. Lots of moving parts. With every school having to wait till spots DO open up due to portal activity competition for guys is hard to gauge. too. Different schools can be seeking fixes with different years of eligibility remaining trying to balance their rooms.

Absolutes are in short supply for portal potential analysis. Including what impact there is on players viewing the number of guys stuck in the portal with no place to go. There is even more risk if activity continues to increase.

Napier added 3 former players so far; a 6’8” 370lb Tackle, a 6’5” 330lb Guard who has a 2-3 round NFL draft projection and the conference Freshman of the year and leading rusher at RB.

“This is a talent acquisition business.” ~ Billy Napier
